There were a lot of spats on the Anders thread after DA2 about whether Male/Female Hawke was "better" for the romance.  And oh god the fights over friendship vs. rivalry.  That's when I tapped out.  Anders is a hot mess no matter what you do.  So pick your flavor of hot mess, enjoy, and STFU

I have never understood the need to be "best" or right in a game that's all about choice.  What you do doesn't invalidate what someone else does.  That's the whole goddamn point of providing options like race, class, sexuality, and romance options.  I mean, *I* think Garrus is best digital husbando ever, but that doesn't mean anyone else has to agree even though I'm totally right  :P

A team of a Artificer Quizzy, Varric, Sera with the Artificer bow, and... I don't know, Dorian with the 3-Fire Mines talent? EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE!

Personally I can't resist Kihm. Every time I contemplate a different spec I only have to remember Kihm's voice and I'm drawn right back in. xD

I still find it pretty funny that Heir up and disappeared and only reappeared because of the last patch.

I still feel I don't fit in here :( it comes across as a romance only fan thread, I finished the Solas romance but was not impressed by it at all.

However I was deeply impressed and emotionally moved by a Solas and human Inquisitor friendship.

- I haven't played a qunari or dwarf long enough to get to any DLC's let alone finish the game so can't comment in that regard.

The Solas friendship arc is one of my two all time favourite character/companion associations-relationships with a protagonist in DAI.

A lot of us romanced him, but there are some who did not, or had multiple playthroughs, including friendship and low approval. The problem is some of us might not have all of the same context, but do feel free to post about your perspective.

Ther's even someone who feels like the friendship arc in Trespasser was warmer and more caring.

To me, it seems that budget and resources were one factor, but since Weekes answered the question about why no M-M Solas romance in a more general way, but only after Trespasser was out, could finally be honest because his plan was finally revealed, and could say 'well, we know what some people might think of him, and we wanted to avoid this trope'.

It makes a lot of sense to me, since he has given a couple of reasons for the romance over time, but he couldn't be completely honest until Trespasser was unleashed upon the world.

To me, reading that, it clicked. Oh...oh...that's thoughtful.

Hm, one of my bigger skepticisms is that Solas just isn't what I see the depraved bisexual trope as (or would if he were bi). But, that could definitely be my own bias towards his character showing. People that don't see him as layered as I do might be more willing to jump on the trope idea.

Arcane Warrior!!!

GRRRR...guess I have to settle for knight-enchanter... :crying:

I could never get into Arcane warrior or Knight enchanter.   My Surana was an Arcane Warrior, but she only used the passives and fade...cloak?  (the ability where you step partly into the fade) Hacking things with a sword was beneath her.

Knight Enchanter is suppose to be good... But I found it really clunky.  Necro.. I never really tried, except the few times I controlled Dorian.

Hey, any Solas gush is good gush!

I see a lot of TrevxSolas fanart of them as friends, and I honestly love it. I RP'd my own fem!Trev that way and, I don't know, he seems to bond better with them than qunari, dwarf, and especially elves. If I didn't get swept away with the "graceful" flirt from his romance, I'm almost certain I wouldn't have liked him while playing as an elf.

Out of curiosity, who's your other all-time favourite? :D (I'm guessing Dorian because he seems to be everyone's bestie xD)

Question for the writers here.

Dialogues.

I so struggle with them. How do you write believable, flowing dialogues, and not slip ooc for respective people?

I've been hanging on hte last chapter second day now, just staring at the talk. It - is - not - flowing. It's bony. Unnatural. And often very ooc.

Edit: Screw it. I'll put it up anyway. Staring on the screen won't help it. Might need an hour on the treadmill again... hmm.

I agree with you. If he were bi, I wouldn't think he fits that trope either, but there's enough of a border that some would. And erring on a more considerate side was, to me, thoughtful.

Friendship is the best Ashaantha! I completely get why we might come off a bit... <3 Solas <3 crazy  but I think a lot of the posters really love and value the friendship with Solas! People have even expressed preferring the friendship conversations in Trespasser to the romance! we can discuss non romance things! We just need someone to steer the conversation a certain direction XD

I have to admit, Garrus was my first BioWare romance, and since then I can't imagine romancing anyone else (seriously, I promised my sister I'd try Liara since she sees her as the Solas-plot-relevant* equivalent romance of the ME series, but I just can't resist that damn dinosaur!), but since moving onto DAI with human-y romances, Garrus' looks more bizarre. Rather than gush at the ME3 scenes I sort of find myself thinking, "how... how does he kiss? I mean, he's all carapace and stuff-".

He's still the best though omg.

*Disclaimer: Not that there is a most plot-relevant romance or that they're more "right" than other romances, just saying. x)

Oh...I used the weapon casting mod, so it was perfect for me! :)

In fact, I made all of the mages Arcane Warriors just for the armor...And that way I didn't have to decide between playing a warrior or playing a mage...

KE spec feels like a maximum nerf...like that "second cousin twice-removed that no one ever talks about," but, it's the best I can get in DAI, so I have to settle for it, unfortunately. :(

My first Bioware romance was Carth.

Liara is the only one you can romance across all three games via DLC, and she is very plot relevant. Just as with Solas, she has a lot of plot armor, but to me, Liara as a character and the Liara romance had such a big impact on me, and nothing affected me that much until Solas. The weird thing about that romance is I relate more to Liara than to Shepard, even though I love my Shepard.

To even think of romancing anyone else feels so wrong.

I'd maybe consider Samara if she were available outside a quick kiss and embrace in DLC.

Apparently, I have a thing for older characters with hints at fun, a moral code, and a nerdy side. ;)

The funny thing is, I'm not really into older men, but older women, yes. Solas, Solas, Solas. If only we knew right off just how old.

I hope this doesn't come off as vague but here I go anyway; when I'm trying to get someone's "voice" down, I listen to a lot of videos of what they're saying. Normally I don't even pay attention to the video and just have the sound play and really listen. Sometimes I write as I'm listening to them to really get it down.

If you have a big load of dialogue you want them to say then write the general gist of what you want them to say and then think about how they would say it (by doing the above). For example; Sera's quite informal, crude, and says things like "right," and "innit". While Solas and Vivianne are much more articulated and they're less likely to use contractions. Dorian's quite lively. Cass tends to (I've noticed anyway) really pronounces her words. Cole's very descriptive and uses a sort of poetic-metaphoric rhyme to his dialogue (but even Weekes said writing Cole was tough for him so I wouldn't worry too much).

This probably doesn't help, but that's what I do anyway. xD I find getting IB's and Varric's voices tough to nail down. I don't know why. x(

Dorian is my bro and very, very close but just doesn't get there. It was Zevran's romance that is my other overall top companion relationship (general term, meaning friendships or lovers), and he's not even on my fav characters list lol. I won't go into detail there as to why, been too long since I played dao right through.

My Solas-romancer hasn't reached Trespasser, she's mid-way through Descent. my first ever character was an elf mage and his line that he says to every character, the indomitable will thing? just made me cringe.. and he says it to my Trevelyan's too so I can not see it, ever, as a flirt lol. Though I can understand my elfy Inquisitor making it into a flirt, intentional or not.. lmao

I don't mind Solas crazy, most of my friends are Solas Crazy, just every time I stick my head in here the conversation at the time, and last few pages etc, has always been romance-specifc only which isn't me topic interest, I'll read but have nothing to add lol. I must be missing the awesome friendship path conversations.

I'm one of the ones who love Solas friendship chat in Trespasser, but it really is an entire game thing for me, not just little parts. My Solas-romancing lady hasn't gotten to Trespasser yet but I have watched vids of it and it still feels extremely well written which is why I'm trying to have a finished save of the romance. Doesn't help that whether I love the romance or not, I get a tad over-emotional, that's just me haha. Unimpressed but it'll still make me cry.

And get out of the tavern? are you crazy?? where else am I going to get the best drinks this side of Thedas!

The KE nerf is bad game play wise, but it makes sense.

The Warden learned the real art from a real Arcane Warrior.  Knight Enchanters were developed from scavenged and bits and pieces of old lore.  Most of the techniques are lost.  Knight Enchanter feels like a cheap knock off of Arcane Warrior because it is.  Apparently, the HoF didn't share what s/he learned.  But then again, my Surana wouldn't.

See... I never like wearing armor.  Even on nightmare, my Surana wore her reaper robes and called it a day.

Jayla's advice is great.  In addition, I'd let the dialogue sit for a while, then read it back aloud to yourself.  As Carrie Fisher said about the original Star Wars, sometimes you can write this stuff but no one can say it :D  You're much more likely to "hear" what's wrong if you actually say it yourself.
