Disagreeing with someone or a group of someones on one thing doesn't mean that you don't still tend to agree with them on other things. Besides which, the Dalish are the only group of people he could be reasonably safe with. He is a hedge mage, an apostate. Humans and city elves would turn him over to the Circle and make him Tranquil, or just kill him outright--he can never be trained as a proper Circle mage. Qunari would kill him or enslave him. The dwarves would likely want no part of his magic, either. Only the Dalish MIGHT accept him, and they MIGHT be willing to listen to the tidbits of lore he's gathered.
And even then maybe it's more about influencing the Dalish than being a part of them. This is Solas. It's more complicated than that.
Most real world straight men don't find women attractive solely based on whether or not they can have babies. That might be a plus if they want a family but they're attracted (presumably) to the person. Solas is straight. That doesn't mean he's thinking, "I bet I could breed twenty kids on THAT one." He may have good reasons for preferring only elves. He might even be mildly influenced by the knowledge that IF he should have children with anyone else, the children would never be elven. But I doubt that's his primary or only motivation.
Do all straight men only want to be with women if they want babies?
Just because he prefers elves doesn't mean it's ONLY about the babies. They may be an influencing factor, but I'd say it's more complicated than that.
How many times do I need to say it? 'Cause this is like saying repeatedly that Dorian is only gay because he doesn't want children. While having elven children and keeping the species alive MAY be a factor, it's probably not the primary reason. And wanting only to be with women just means he's straight. He isn't necessarily perving over the Inquisitor's womb.
I'm not sure, but if it's a SUPER story reason, then I'd say it has to do with elven culture, or eluvians, or the Fade, or SOMETHING elf-specific. Beyond that it is certainly possible that he's simply straight, and maybe doesn't find other humanoid species as attractive as elves (I'm avoiding saying races here, because race would maybe imply the difference between a Fereldan and Rivaini... when it comes to elves and any other of the humanoid species of Thedas, you will never get an elven child because apparently they're too different).
I repeat... maybe he's just straight, and the elf-only preference has other reasons behind it.
But I'll also say that as long as it is optional to have children or not (i.e. dialogue options), why is it such a bad thing to consider having kids? As long as that is not his primary motivating factor in getting together with the Inquisitor and he doesn't absolutely insist on it (or else the relationship is over), I'm fine with Solas wanting little elven children someday. Some of my characters would want that. Some wouldn't. I'm doubtful that Solas would demand children out of a relationship--I could be wrong there, but I doubt it. If it even comes up, I'm sure there will be an option to turn him down--and there wouldn't be kids until post-game anyway, if they happened at all. Remember, there won't be marriage in Inquisition (I wish there would be an option to be married post-game, and an option to decide whether or not your character has kids after the game, because yay happy ending, but so many people HATE the idea that even the option of it in a snippet of ending text may never be available--not worth the marketing budget on something people will probably just headcanon/fanfic anyway).
All that said, I'm sad for the guys who wanted a piece of Solas. I was hoping so hard that he'd be bisexual. I expected him to be bisexual. I thought everyone who wanted him could have him. I expected him to be ungated. He was gated elf-only, so I thought he'd be bi... but he isn't.
I suspect Cullen will turn out to be gated, because if he and Iron Bull were both gated, and both were anti-elf, Solas may have been tacked on as a fresh new LI for elves (who originally would NOT have been an LI since the Inquisitor was originally human-only) to make up for the lack of variety--but being gated female-only means that players of male elves still miss out. This would also make it more likely for Blackwall to be a bisexual option available to everyone, if Cullen turns out to be human-only--but I can only speculate. I think it would be better if Vivienne, with her ambition being her primary goal, were not a romance option--because her ambition is too lofty to take time out for romance and not every woman is looking for love. But, maybe she's the final option. I hope for the sake of all the guys out there that Blackwall is available... but the downside to that, unfortunately, is lesbians will get fewer options if he is available instead of Vivienne. Someone's going to be missing an option no matter what, and I'm sad for that.
I have plenty of likes left. Please take them all.
