Disagreeing with someone or a group of someones on one thing doesn't mean that you don't still tend to agree with them on other things.  Besides which, the Dalish are the only group of people he could be reasonably safe with.  He is a hedge mage, an apostate.  Humans and city elves would turn him over to the Circle and make him Tranquil, or just kill him outright--he can never be trained as a proper Circle mage.  Qunari would kill him or enslave him.  The dwarves would likely want no part of his magic, either.  Only the Dalish MIGHT accept him, and they MIGHT be willing to listen to the tidbits of lore he's gathered.

And even then maybe it's more about influencing the Dalish than being a part of them.  This is Solas.  It's more complicated than that.

Most real world straight men don't find women attractive solely based on whether or not they can have babies.  That might be a plus if they want a family but they're attracted (presumably) to the person.  Solas is straight.  That doesn't mean he's thinking, "I bet I could breed twenty kids on THAT one."  He may have good reasons for preferring only elves.  He might even be mildly influenced by the knowledge that IF he should have children with anyone else, the children would never be elven.  But I doubt that's his primary or only motivation.

Do all straight men only want to be with women if they want babies?

Just because he prefers elves doesn't mean it's ONLY about the babies.  They may be an influencing factor, but I'd say it's more complicated than that.

How many times do I need to say it?  'Cause this is like saying repeatedly that Dorian is only gay because he doesn't want children.  While having elven children and keeping the species alive MAY be a factor, it's probably not the primary reason.  And wanting only to be with women just means he's straight.  He isn't necessarily perving over the Inquisitor's womb.

I'm not sure, but if it's a SUPER story reason, then I'd say it has to do with elven culture, or eluvians, or the Fade, or SOMETHING elf-specific.  Beyond that it is certainly possible that he's simply straight, and maybe doesn't find other humanoid species as attractive as elves (I'm avoiding saying races here, because race would maybe imply the difference between a Fereldan and Rivaini... when it comes to elves and any other of the humanoid species of Thedas, you will never get an elven child because apparently they're too different).

I repeat... maybe he's just straight, and the elf-only preference has other reasons behind it.

But I'll also say that as long as it is optional to have children or not (i.e. dialogue options), why is it such a bad thing to consider having kids?  As long as that is not his primary motivating factor in getting together with the Inquisitor and he doesn't absolutely insist on it (or else the relationship is over), I'm fine with Solas wanting little elven children someday.  Some of my characters would want that.  Some wouldn't.  I'm doubtful that Solas would demand children out of a relationship--I could be wrong there, but I doubt it.  If it even comes up, I'm sure there will be an option to turn him down--and there wouldn't be kids until post-game anyway, if they happened at all.  Remember, there won't be marriage in Inquisition (I wish there would be an option to be married post-game, and an option to decide whether or not your character has kids after the game, because yay happy ending, but so many people HATE the idea that even the option of it in a snippet of ending text may never be available--not worth the marketing budget on something people will probably just headcanon/fanfic anyway).

All that said, I'm sad for the guys who wanted a piece of Solas.  I was hoping so hard that he'd be bisexual.  I expected him to be bisexual.  I thought everyone who wanted him could have him.  I expected him to be ungated.  He was gated elf-only, so I thought he'd be bi... but he isn't.

I suspect Cullen will turn out to be gated, because if he and Iron Bull were both gated, and both were anti-elf, Solas may have been tacked on as a fresh new LI for elves (who originally would NOT have been an LI since the Inquisitor was originally human-only) to make up for the lack of variety--but being gated female-only means that players of male elves still miss out.  This would also make it more likely for Blackwall to be a bisexual option available to everyone, if Cullen turns out to be human-only--but I can only speculate.  I think it would be better if Vivienne, with her ambition being her primary goal, were not a romance option--because her ambition is too lofty to take time out for romance and not every woman is looking for love.  But, maybe she's the final option.  I hope for the sake of all the guys out there that Blackwall is available... but the downside to that, unfortunately, is lesbians will get fewer options if he is available instead of Vivienne.  Someone's going to be missing an option no matter what, and I'm sad for that.

I have plenty of likes left.  Please take them all.

I see you taking this as a personal attack on you.

To clarify, I am addressing the people who are, in general, complaining about not having an even representation, talking about other companions, or just being plain negative.

Also, I did say it's okay to be dissapointed.

Actually I wasn't? I have absolutely no interest in Solas, I just think people have a right to be as dissapointed as they want to be.

Personally, gotta say I'm super curious as to his race restriction. It seems to be at odds with so much of what we previously knew, but obviously not. Especially with Mark Darrah's reaction to the question.

And what is this up coming blog?

Allan said it was interesting too.  So I'm super curious now.

After confirming the lack of a Varric romance, Mike Laidlaw said he'd see about getting a blog post up to clear up any remaining mysteries.  So it looks like it's going to be about the last LIs.  Maybe any race-gating on already revealed LIs.

So... now that we know that Solas is romanceable by a female elf - does anyone care to discuss his or her female elf Inquisitor ideas?

I'm thinking (now) of making a female elven rogue. I might name her Brush. Black hair. Green eyes. Dark skin. :)

But Solas doesn't need a brush! (jk)

I haven't really thought about it yet. I guess I would make an Elf warrior. I like to give my Elven characters a darker complexion too (don't ask why, I just do!).

I'm trying to think something up, but it's hard because I was pretty much dead set on my female human

Maybe I'll just have her grow some pointy ears

Or I'm gonna gender swap my dalish male elf that I orginially planned for Dorian hmmm...

Not really. Majority just said they'd make a girl for Sera
Straight guys don't tend to mind hotchickonchick action generally for better or worse

Nah, I remember it differenty. There were many topics about dudes wondering why Sera is gay. And there were plenty homophobic comments.

I'm with CatBlade on this one.  We're the thread of unicorns and BEEs!  Our thread got praised by the devs for being the fuzziest place in the BSN!  Disappointment always hurts, but let's stay positive! Solas being straight and for elves only doesn't stop anyone from enjoying having the character in the game, or experiencing his friendship.  And it doesn't mean that he can't be romanced, it just means rolling a different character.

I'm sorry for being off topic but I'm curious. Do most of you pick the romance and then create your character to match? I was wondering about that because I see the bolded part a lot. I create my character first (their race, gender, character ect.) and then I see if there is a romance that would match them.

Pushing this up to this page in case it was missed. This might help alleviate a few fears (though nothing says Solas isn't a lovely.....villain!  )

Bahaha! I was thinking "Brush" like foliage. But now that you made this connection, I *have* to name her Brush. It's the perfect match.

Remember the straights crying over Sera? Almost on the same level.

It'd also be oh so fun if Viv is gay. ;)

I remember a few people in her thread and possibly in the romance thread, but those are two threads that I personally don't bother with.

If Vivienne is announced as straight this weekend, this board will be flooded, not just in her topic or in whatever other topic, I'm talking new topics flooding this board.  Will look similar to Mass Effect 3 ending topics.

As for if Vivienne is gay, sure the board will blow up as well, not as much, which means not as many laughs.

Either way I don't really care.  I care for good characters, with good stories, not not poor characters with open legs.

I expected Cassandra to be the lesbian LI, but God forbid Bioware make the masculine female companion actually gay.  <_<

When she's not breaking faces, she's breaking hearts.

I've decided to swap a plan for a Bull romance playthrough for a Solas one; so now Olwen, a female elven elementalist mage with red hair, blue eyes and dark skin will romance Solas, and Zelda, a female human spirit mage with blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin has her romance up in the air for Bull or Blackwall if he gets revealed.

I do the same for my 'canon' character. Then it's a process of elimination to see who fits. I will roll other characters to explore different angles (and get the achievements if any  )

I think most people are doing it just because of the restriction and they really wanted to romance Solas in particular! A lot of people care a good amount about the romances and the experience and character development that comes with them, so they change their character to match so that they can explore that! If we hadn't known the LIs, pretty sure most would do what you do. That's what I did for DA:O!

Also I really wanna see this thread nice and happy again soon. ^_^

Yeech.

1. People are allowed to be disappointed. It's the same as being disappointed over a different aspect of the game such as PC UI, Number of companions, Story decision choices.

2. People should voice opinions on the matter respectfully and politely. No rage is needed, or over the top drama.

3. People should not make fun of or degrade people who enjoy this optional content.

I'll leave this here. This is supposed to be a nice thread. We are respectful human beings, adults, and should act like it. Trolls, and disrespectful people, please leave.

I do that for my first playthrough, and Samaire Cadash will probably be forever alone as a result. d: But I don't want to miss out on the party banter / romances, and so generally build a party and then see if I need to play a tank or not and then decide who they would be (a defender of their fellows, a wild thing, etc.) and then see if there is someone in the party who would compliment them in a romance or in this case, pick an advisor.

I don't think most do this. It's more common for people to have a few different Inquisitors in mind that they want to play through at some point and then switch around the order they play them in based on LI availability. I already had a female elf mage in mind as my alternate first Inquisitor and all I did was push her up to the first playthrough when I heard the Solas news.

Despite what some may think, even most in the character threads don't think romances are the be all and end all. Just another factor to think about and possibly plan around, among many others.

Not as many as you might hope there were, few complainers just kept spamming the same messages and threads but there wasn't that much of a shock or tears. Hot lesbian chicks are quite popular among dudes. Heck, that was the only reason they created femShepard sometimes
The same people also left homophobic comments about Dorian and I doubt because they wanted to romance him ;)
Some folk just are homophobic in general
