I know the exact feeling. I live in a small town in New Zealand, and the twelve or so other people here are just not into gaming, or nerdy things in general. I have no idea why. Almost everyone thought I was crazy when I attempted a career in archaeology, because who cares about history? The others are the friendliest Christians you could ever hope to met, but apparently don't have any time for fiction. It's a lonely way to live for someone who spends their spare time writing fanfiction, but hey, at least there's the internet!
Yeah, I don't know what I ever did without this thread. Seriously, it was only a year ago that I started actively posting here and before that I was never an active member of any online community or fandom. In the course of the past year I've learned a whole bunch of new terms-- NSFW (that was an interesting discovery), what other things asterisks can be used for *laughs*, what smut meant (the way you guys use it), what a gif was and how to post it (I was living under a rock, I swear), a crap ton of new abbreviations (IRL, IMO, TL; DR, KISA, AU, OTP ), what fluff and snark mean, and tons of other new things that I can't think of right now!
I never had a way to vent my obsessions before!
...
Of course, before this thread I've never been this obsessed with a character or game this much (writing fanfiction, spending hours chatting online, biting my nails waiting for new scraps of information)... so you guys might have caused sparked this addiction, or maybe I was always a closeted fangirl and you just through open the doors!
Anywho, it is nice to share thoughts and ideas about nerd culture with other people instead of inwardly struggling over the feelings I have about a certain topic (I probably laid in bed for hours staring at the ceiling, arguing with myself about the ending of DA2).
I love history! What period and culture do you focus on?
It's definitely tough not being able to discuss things you really care about with people you really care about. A few of my family members humor me, but they're not actually interested. My older sisters will gab on about their lives, and kids, and boy drama and those moments when they politely wait for me to update them on my life all I can say is "my classes are going well. I have tons of homework I need to do though." when I want to say "I just finished this book about this prostitute who struggles to uncover mysteries of courtly intrigue while war brews and people plot against her!". They would listen to be nice (unless I ever tried talking about the Solas romance, in which case I'd probably get a condescending "you need to find a boyfriend/get out more"), but I want discussions and interest
. Oh well, I should be happy with what I have, and what I have is a loving blanketfort!
