That feel when you trying to write up stuff about yarn, but all you can think about is the fic you've been working on.

And I love yarn.

I'm curious as to what it is you have to write about yarn.

I have a little crafty blog type thing and whenever I use a yarn I really like I'll type up a little review of it or something of the sort.

Lately I have been working on a shawl for my mother-in-law and the yarn I picked out has been pretty sweet to work with.

One simply does not have enough yarn. Ever.

/glances on her wardrobe full of unused yarns.

Ever.

.... Only you forget that the one urging the loudest about completing rituals was Morrigan :) She certainly wasn't an ancient elf and didn't visit the place, yet knew enough about ancient elves and their language to be adamant that doing rituals would likely benefit Inquisitor. Same with Solas - considering that he knows even more about Elvenhan and elvhen culture and language, there's no reason NOT to follow his advice.

For that inquisitor, in that situation, she trusted Cole more than Morrigan or Solas. She was big into the "protect my people" thing, so when Cole said "there are soldiers dying out there", that really spoke to her.

Plus, the sentinels attacked her and her forces first, so any goodwill they might have had for being elves had evaporated. She viewed herself as kind of an older aunt to the Inquisition, and these folks were stabbing her nieces and nephews with (in her opinion) no provocation.

I did the rituals on my first playthrough, so I knew what would happen (and enjoyed doing the puzzles). I was yelling at her the whole time, but it was 100% in-character for her to skip them.

Thinking of giving Quoll Writer a go.  I know if's been mentioned a few times here, anyone got anything to say about it?  Good?  Bad? Indifferent?

That's so cool! Kudos for the handy skill. I fail at crafts. There was this "crafting" subject in elementary and middle school where we had to learn to sew, knit, cook, etc., and I failed at everything. At the end of each period I would look at whatever ugly thing I have created, look at some of the beautiful elabolate crafted objects of my classmates, and weep.

Hey thread, I know we have some people who understand MBTI here, how would you type Solas? I'm currently having a discussion about whether Solas is closer to an INTP or an INTJ, and would be interested to hear your input.

About Quoll. Interface takes some getting used to but I'm liking it more and more as I use it. In each project, if you link things it does pretty nice things like highlight sentences where a character's name or one of their aliases is included. Tracks their mentions. My one thing I haven't quite digured out if it can do is track things across projects, since I have one story that overlaps between Solavellan and the past but would like to put it in both collections and cross-reference. Not sure if that's possible though. Might have to just copy it over and place in both to have Solas as a tagged character.

I'm really liking how organized it is and the easy drag and drop. Still exploring, but also still using it. The achievements are a bit cheesy though. They startled me at first.

Thinking of giving Quoll Writer a go.  I know if's been mentioned a few times here, anyone got anything to say about it?  Good?  Bad? Indifferent?

I tried it out, but ultimately decided not to use it.

Positives: It has nice built-in functionality for organizing ideas, research, outlines, pretty much all of the side effort that goes along with writing. It is also a nice balance between having many of these functions but not being overwhelmingly complicated.

Negatives: Clunky interface. Very clunky. Also a bit ugly. Written in java, I'm not a fan of java apps on PC. Worst of all, the font for your writing is some serif font, and I can't stand writing drafts in anything else that arial.

But if these things don't matter to you as much, it's a useful tool.

I keep feeling like I would enjoy learning to knit but have never picked it up.  My mom had an elderly friend who taught me to crochet as a kid but I've forgotten all but one or two stitches. I'd be pretty useless with it now. In school, I took both a half-year of drawing and a ceramics class so  those were fun. I used to be kind of okay at drawing, I think, but now, I've lost that too. I'm best at abstractions now, giving impressions or feelings than actually trying to do anything precise.

My Hawk executed Anders today. I hated doing it, but I felt that was only course she could take. I was going to kill Isabella too, for causing all the **** going down with Arishok, basically. I am, obviously, rather sensitive about betrayal these days. (also, my Lavellan is a fluffy puppy compared to my Hawk, all right.)

I think some of our heroes can be much colder than Solas himself.

So much this, and I think players can be very selective in what they remember :P  My Hawke was even further down the Well-Intentioned Extremist hole than Anders by the end; he at least had the excuse of being possessed.  She was one of my favorite "play bad" characters.

It's not for everyone, but IMO it's a fascinating RP experience, taking the concept of "hero" and turning it inside out.  I did the same with my Jedi Exile in KOTOR 2 and my Jedi Knight in TOR.

Does anyone else have this problem? Like I miss playing DAI and I want to pick it up again, but then I can't because I know the story already.

I'm stalling on Adaar's playthrough ATM, but that's mostly because I'm slogging through Hissing Wastes.  I miss playing Lavellan, but I still just can't.  It's less because I know the story and more because of painful feels each time I try.

Crafting with yarn is pretty much what I do, but other stuff I'm not so great at.

I mean, there's only one June, yes?

I enjoying doing crochet more(it moves along faster) but I prefer the end product of knit. I find crochet easier also, but that's an individual thing. I've heard plenty of people also say knitting was easier for them.

I was always very skeptical at the idea that it wasn't Solas who killed Felassan, although I did kind of hope that it would be true.  However, I don't think Felassan had left him much choice, he had picked the other side and compromised the mission so what was Solas supposed to do in that situation?  He doesn't even discuss the situation with Felassan, perhaps because it would have made it harder to kill him.  He steels himself and does what he believes has to be done.

Just to add to this -

Thinking on the situation (and maybe I'm projecting hard because I've written a character in a position similar to Solas' before, so bear that in mind) it's not about being cold and not caring about his friends/loved ones, it's about being dutiful and doing what's right. If we assume Solas is acting mostly or even partially because he feels he must do this, he's duty-bound to do it, then he's not thinking of this in terms of himself. He probably wants to be with his new friends, and wants to be happy with his lover, and wants to just lay down his burden and be normal - but none of this is about what he wants. It's about what he must do, what he's cost others and what he'll continue to cost others if he doesn't fulfill his duty. To put that aside, to stay with Lavellan and the Inquisition, to protect those he loves and cares for would be indescribably selfish. He'd be abandoning all those he feels he's obligated to help, just because it's cold to hurt those you love. If Solas genuinely views the path he's taking as better, as leading to a brighter world, then to him, there's no way he can justify throwing it all away just to be with his friends.

I suppose it's a cold philosophy, but trying looking at it another way. What if Solas discovers another method of bringing down the Veil, a completely painless one, where no one has to die - except for Lavellan. For whatever reason, she has to be sacrificed. Solas can refuse, of course, save his love, be with her - and in doing so, he condemns the elves, the mages, the spirits, any unknown parties he might be concerned for, and maybe even the whole world, if removing the Veil is key to stopping the Blight. Would it be noble of him to refuse to do it? Cold of him if he did? What's even the right option in that situation?

I think, in such a situation, Solas would sacrifice Lavellan. And I wouldn't be able to blame him.

It's because of this that the whole "Wow, you like Solas even after Trespasser, don't you know he doesn't care about you at all?" argument makes me want to punch a wall. Because Solas isn't seeing it like that. He doesn't see himself as choosing between Lavellan or, I dunno, some sort of personal wealth. He sees himself as choosing between Lavellan (and Felassan, and the Inquisition) or the improved existence of the entire world (Along with any parties that benefit from Solas' plan). To condemn them may be cold, but to save them would be selfish, short-sighted, and morally repugnant.

Okay, so folding some laundry and thinking of DA and this thought just occurred because of the craft talk.

June is suppose to a guy that crafted. All kinds of things.....but names weapons and armor.

In Origins the spirit of Valor chills all day crafting weapons.

Think June may have been a spirit of Valor?

Dunno about that, considering how faulty the existing lore can be. Like, we're being told by Solas that Mythal should be more associated with Vengeance rather than plain concept of Justice, yet Vengeance is apparently the domain of Elgar'nan.

Elgar'nan himself however sounds and feels more like embodiment of Rage or Wrath (though I suppose the concept of holy wrath/retribution could be linked to both Rage/Anger and Justice/Vengeance).

True, but I do lean towards June being about weapon making simply because of two sources that are better than the Dalish stories. Those being that song of Sylaise and the rant by Geldaraun(sp?). They talk about June's craft and fire, maybe referencing a forge.

Just makes me wonder if June was almost more of a spirit of Valor turned demon of War situation. If Valor spirits do indeed chill all day making cool weapons.

Totally theory and thought though.

Okay...so i went and refreshed myself on Ares.....and turns out Ares has at least one thing in common with June.

Both had a lover and/or sister, Enyo.

And she was about destruction.

You know who this sounds like?

Spoiler

That's all I got.

Oh, and he his sister was Athena. I know folks draw parallels to Andruil with her.

*shrug*

Maybe.

Been taking moments in between chores to try and write a little and  Quoll is actually pretty helpful since I can keep everything sort of right in front of me in a simple, organized fashion. I still feel like my writing is dragging and I haven't finished anything in what feels like forever, but maybe this will work.

Speaking of writing, how do you guys like to do a bit of scene/location transitions? By that, I'm asking do you like to describe in detail the switch of places or do you just like to quickly let someone know "folks went from point A to point B"?

or what do you think works best?

If that makes sense.

I barely understand but I think INTP/J (sometimes called the Architect: theoretical, abstract, yet logical. And the Mastermind: sceptical, driven, playing the long game usually) might be right. There's just enough softness in him that you think he might be waylaid, but he's still logical enough to continue on anyway.

Or maybe INFJ (the Counsellor: insightful and organised, committed to their goals), who cares a bit more about people and feeeelings, but still has a clear idea of what needs to be done for The Greater Good.

Thoughts?

I think it really depends on the particular story. It's fine if it feels right to say "By the time they arrived a few hours later in Antiva, they were starving" to transition and pass the time. Or you can give some details.

I set two girls off walking a basket of laundry down to the river in my last one and did this -

"They rose together, each grasping one of the basket's handles as they began down the rest of the way, chatting about the events of the past days."

Next paragraph began "Once at the river...."

But if you feel like the journey or the passage of time is particularly important, then you can tell it more fully.
