I liked how quizzy had the option in-game to be unaware without being deliberately offensive. I hadn't actually thought about how much interaction my Lavellan had with sexual minorities until Krem's dialogue came up. I decided that given the relatively small population of the Dalish, her background was less cosmopolitan than, say, Adaar who travelled all over the Marches. So Lavellan needed a bit of gentle education, while Adaar understood Krem and Dorian immediately.

 

I left it without asking because I figured she'd feel like it was intense prying. So that remained there. And as i've said, also skipped asking Dorian to clarify same sex attraction, for obvious reasons.

L from Death Note: Will compete with Solas to the Death at who can eat more cake and look more like a hobo. Also there will be so much scheming, analyzing and overanalyzing of Solas' every move that I worry he'll forget to seal the Breach.  But if the two of them get around to it and unite their effort, Cory will be outsmarted and defeated in exactly 5 minutes. After which the two of them will get back to rivaling each other. 

 

Kira from Death Note: I get the shivers thinking of a world state in which both Kira and Solas exist, and they will probably rival each other. Everyone's f*cked.

 

Saber from Fate Zero: Saber would actually be the perfect Inquisitor. A brave noble female warrior whose focus will be on helping the people and saving the world. She will be friends with Solas and they can bond over the feeling of having failed in the past. She will romance Josephine and be her brave knight in shining armor. 

 

Revy from Black Lagoon: Just think A**quisitor, but with Revy it would be a lot of fun. Every battle will start by her yelling, "Kill 'em all, baby" and unleashing gunfire on everyone. (Yes, Revy will have guns, how can one imagine Revy without guns?) She would romance Cullen and be protective of him, because he'd seem too nice for his own good. 

 

Yuno Gasai from Future Diary: She would romance Solas. Yes, but what would she do as Inquisitor, you ask? She would romance Solas. I totally imagine this post-Tresspasser scene between them:

 

Solas: Yuno, how did you find me?

Yuno: I imprisoned and tortured every elf in the Inquisition. A few of them confessed to be your agents, and I used the information to track you down. Now we can be together forever, my love!

Solas: But what about my guards? Also, Yuno, what are you doing?

Yuno: I am chaining you to the wall, vhenan, so that we never have to be apart. Also I murdered every one of your guards single-handedly with an axe. Have I told you yet just how beautiful you are?

Solas: Look, Yuno, I know we kissed in the Fade, but that was impulsive and ill-considered. We cannot be together. I must focus all my effort on restoring my people.

Yuno: Do not worry, my heart, I have the perfect plan. I will gather all the elves in Thedas, sacrifice them in a blood magic ritual, and bring us back in time to before you created the Veil. You can just sit here and think of how wonderful it will be when the mission is done and we're together forever. You and me. Together. For eternity.

Haven't watched this... I know I know. I'm awful, but I couldn't make it past the first episode. I guess part of it is the excess blood and violence, which doesn't usually bother me, but like fan service I can only take so much before I'm like "no, just no." Also I FRIGGIN HATE it when animals, weird sentient creatures, cutesy murder girls speak in noises that are not natural noises! AND then they get named after that noise!! Should I just name my cat Row and my fish Glub Glub Glub filter noise? AND I LOVE POKEMON BUT THAT'S BECAUSE I WAS A KID WHEN I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THEM! IT MADE SENSE THEN! BUNNY NOISES USED TO BE HOP HOP AND KANGAROOS BOING BOING BOING!

 

Drosophila, no mention of Inquisitor Armstrong?   Solas you better run now, because Olivier does not tolerate such actions!

 

I would also add Izaya from Durarara to the list as a contender for poor Thedas.

My Lavellan's curiosity frequently gets the better of her sense. She asked about Krem but not Dorian, since I figured homosexuality is an easier concept to understand, and even she knew better than to ask during Dorian's quest. My Adaar is bisexual and his mother was a tamassran before fleeing. So he's familiar with the idea of "aqun-athlok."

I'm not trans, but from experience, generally most people don't mind if you mess it up just the once, and apologise immediately afterwards, move on, don't make a big fuss, and don't repeat your mistake? It's not ideal, but it's not necessarily the end of the world.

 

In feminist/LGBTQ meetings, it's nowadays quite common to introduce yourself with 'name and pronouns' so that you know right off the bat how to properly refer to someone. I hope that one day this becomes common enough that whenever you introduce yourself, you automatically introduce your pronouns too, because gender can often be with at complete odds with presentation or expression may typically indicate. In short, you can't really ever tell someone's gender, or their pronouns, by looking at them, it's just that a lot of people happen to look & act in a way that corresponds with what's usually presumed. Even in that scenario, it's quite likely you've interacted with someone who is transgender in your lifetime but isn't out in public, and thus goes by what name/pronouns they were given at birth.

 

I love that when I go to conferences or games or events that attract more diverse crowds, I see more and more pronoun options appearing on badges and such. Mine all match - most people's do. But it's important, regardless. I know people all up and down the binary as far as identity and presentation, as well as nonbinary/fluid folks whose presentation doesn't necessarily match their identities (which sometimes change). Some people might be afraid to ask or may come off as initially confused by the various categories, but it's not too hard to understand with a little effort. And yay, being cool to other people.

I was camp counseling at a teen camp this summer and the camp had a zipline set up. Well a very androgynous young lady is about to take her turn ziplining when the zipline instructor mistook her for a boy. He quickly corrected himself before he said "boy, girl, gender is a state of mind, right?" then he shoved her off  it was a Christian camp too! Poor girl, but what a great surprise!

I wonder how language will change with the previously rigid structures of masculinity and femininity and male and female being torn down? Them and they is already becoming a lot more acceptable in usage for an unknown gender. 

Perhaps gender itself will have less meaning in the future?

I love sociology by the way (and philosophy and psychology) and the progress we've made as a society (although it does seem awfully slow at times) in the past century is amazing! Concepts and standards that have been the norm since the beginning of civilization are being questioned and rethought. Of course there have always been exceptions, but for the most part gender roles and identities weren't something that were challenged very often before.

And I went of on a tangent... ignore ignore.

A question, were ants always real? Because I can't imagine ants were to effected by the construction of the Veil, so Solas's ants are our ants... so people were listed below ants on the important life list...  oh Solas sometimes I want to strangle you, sometimes I want to kiss you, but I always want to shove a fistful of sense into that stubborn bald head of yours!

I've watched Claymore, Another, and like two episodes of Rosemary + Vampire... plus I read enough of the Hot Gimmick manga to make me question life, relationships, and IGN (who placed it at number 1 for top 10 shojo magas) so I don't know about my mental health.

 

I'm always willing to take new anime recommendations! I'm in my library now, but I'll watch that opening later!

Goodness, it can be awful putting kids to sleep. I spent this past summer day babysitting my newborn niece and 2 year old nephew and the summer before that night babysitting my 4 year old nephew, at the time 2 year old niece, and less than 1 year old nephew and I all I can say about that is ohmygoshI'mneverhavingkidsever. Spawn, they're all spawn. Evil incarnate hidden behind the cherub faces of innocence and youth.

Since they called him the Dread Wolf, they probably ahd wolves back then, so why not ants as well? I think the Veil affected mostly magical and sentient creatures. Some plants and animals may have been harmed by it, but I think it was mostly a by-product of the general chaos, not a direct effect of the Veil.

 

As a location comment in the Emerald Graves, Solas sighs and says sadly, "These trees will likely outlive us all." That makes me think that whatever his plan is, nature itself will survive it.

 

He seems to care and be interested in nugs, wolves, and probably other animals as well. I think he likes animals, and wants to protect them and preserve nature as much as he can. 

 

My HC is that in the beginning of the game he does not actually know how different the gremlins are from ants. He says they seemed like Tranquil to him. So can they feel? They seem to experience some emotion apart from the most base hunger, fear, and desire, but to what extent can they truly feel? Can they reach the emotional and spiritual depths of elven souls? Can they truly appreciate wisdom, kindness, compassion, beauty the way the elves can? 

 

It must be very sad to be him at the beginning of the game. Imagine thinking you're the only survivor of a cataclysm along with a bunch of incredibly superficial dumb people, who cannot challenge you intellectually or care about anything you care about. Now, you might be wrong and realize you have misjudged them. But if you believe you're in this situation in the beginning, you'll probably be miserable.

My kids have a three way mishmash and noone but us ever understands them.

Fun though.

Honestly I love kids, and I adore my nieces and nephew, but there were points when I felt like I was one scream away from jumping out the window and leaving them to fend for themselves. And that was for two summers... people do it everyday *shudders*

It's a totally different feel when you look at them and think Like, you'll be having a bad day with them and then they turn to you, do something cute and you're all like "Awww, that little spawn grew inside me. That's cool." It's like a reset button you get when dealing with your own children.
