It'll sound less clunky (and still be grammatically correct) if you use an contraction. "He'd woken up cranky today." Solas doesn't use many contractions in his actual speech, but IMO it's fine in narration.

OK, native speakers, I need some help with a grammar/writing question.
So I know that when talking about the past and referring to something that had happened in the past before that past, we say "had done".
So if I'm narrating that Solas remembers waking up cranky in the morning, the grammatically correct way to say it should be: "He had woken up cranky that day."
But that sounds clunky to me. Am I right that it sounds clunky? (I don't always have the same sense of what sounds right and what doesn't as native speakers do.)
So is it OK to just use past tense? "He woke up cranky that day." Or would that sound incorrect, because the time frame I'm referring to is 5-6 hours after he woke up?
Bonus question: What about replacing 'that day' with 'today'? Does that sound right? "He had woken up cranky today."

You can also rephrase the sentence entirely. "He began the day in a cranky mood, which he hadn't yet shaken." "His mood upon awakening was cranky, and five hours later, remained irritable"
Play with it.
Or you can say "He had woken up cranky." a little more compact, especially if you're talking about morning in general.
Hmm, I've heard a lot about Life is Strange without knowing anything about it. Is it like the Walking Dead with releases? And what's with all the hype around it?
It is episodic, but the last one is coming in a few hours so it's a complete game after that. It's character and narrative-driven, and your choices can and do affect things that happen later. It's quite a pretty game, it has an interesting premise, i really like the characters and well, it also can really bring the feels.

It makes sense to assume morning for anyone but Solas. I bet on his days off he sleeps until the mid-afternoon or doesn't bother waking up at all

I wish I could ship my Lavellan with Zev. She's not the type to give up on Solas, and as a player I want to follow the Solavellan arc to its conclusion. But she would be happier with Zev. Though I suppose that's not saying much; most people in Thedas are better relationship material than apocalypse boyfriend
