I understand and will be more careful with my comments. It's just a little strange to me because the general rule of the internet or any kind of public media is that once you put your work out there, you should expect to be judged. If you can't handle it, then perhaps you should wait until you are mentally ready to publicize your work.

I'm going to speak in generalities here, mainly from my experience as a writer and reader in fandom, so take this all as my opinions. :)

Most fanfic writers are hobbyists, and as such it's something meant to be fun, as well as a way to join the general conversation of the fandom.

Basically, if you do in-depth crit that isn't asked for, you're going into the playground and telling the kids they're playing wrong. You're allowed to do it of course, and some people are thick-skinned enough to take it... but by and large it seems that in my experience, it's best to go by the rule, "If you can't think of something nice to say, don't say anything at all". Some people really get their self-worth tied into their writing, and unwanted criticism can really hurt them.

Most people can see whether their story worked for other people in fandom, by looking at how positively their work was received via kudos and hit count, and occasionally comments. I generally wait until after about a week of exposure to the general public, before I decide whether my experiment was a failure or not. I do not ask for concrit, personally, because I'm not trying to impress anyone, I'm just having fun.

There are people who want concrit and advice, but usually they'll request it in their profile, or will ask for it at the beginning or end of their story.

I agree. I always try to look at my writing from a more professional, pragmatic point of view after I've written it in order for me to edit it properly and understand what can be improved, even if it might be hard.

There are, however, a lot of new writers on fanfic sites in which fanfiction is their first experience in the publicizing/writing world. There are also just a bunch of writers who hold their stories very closely to their hearts, and are probably more easy to offend than they should be.

I'm not saying the situation is optimal, but it's just how it is. I still struggle with criticism, especially from strangers, though I'm working at looking at everything from a strictly professional lens when it's needed. It's one of my biggest problems as a writer, though that can go for a lot of us I guess

I just get so excited to see a comment on something that even if someone went full on hater on me, I think I'd smile.

Cause hey, got a reaction with the nonsense that spews out of my brain. That's progress.

But hurting someone's feelings is something I really try to avoid while commenting. I think people have the right to be sensitive about something they put time and effort into, so better to get a feel for how best to communicate something to the individual first before laying out all the thoughts I would think.

Yes, I'd say that media is subject to criticism and commentary, but on the flip side, a creator has no obligation to accept or engage with unsolicited criticism. Or compliments. It works that way too.

Saying people should be "mentally ready" for unsolicited criticism comes off a bit harsh, IMO.  But again, that's where a creator can simply refuse to engage or disengage.

I am not saying that writers have an obligation to engage with the criticism. I am just saying that once you put your work out there you shouldn't expect every comment to be positive and should be ready to handle/ignore the negative ones that aren't helpful to you.

Except in my situation, I didn't do an in-depth crit. Most of my comments were overwhelmingly positive and I just wrote a few sentences about my opinion on something that I labeled as a minor quibble. I even made sure to end it on a positive note, so I was surprised that even something small like that threw the author off.

So........I was wondering today.....

.....did anything ever confirm that the tavern song I Am The One is about Solas or not? Cause I remember a lot of us here thinking that song must be about him and I was thinking about that today.

Yeah, a few sentences. I get that to offer any crit, that you must really care enough about the story enough to want it to be the best it can be, but most comments I see are only one sentence long if even a sentence. That actually sounds pretty in-depth comparatively.

I guess I'm just really not used to this culture. I kind of wish that fanfic sites have some kind of tag or option that lets you know whether the author is accepting constructive criticism or not.

There's a lot of excellent meta on your blog (apparently, since people are stealing it!), so I'm kind of glad you put it in a place I can find it easily. :P

That problem when you finish writing a chapter.....and you're sleepy.......but you really want to start writing the next chapter......but brain is too foggy to make anything really coherent.

That problem now.

I now wonder how well I will sleep tonight.

-_-

I keep a notebook by my bed now and write ideas and even several paragraphs in the dark, because I realized that staring at a bright laptop screen at night will ruin my cIrcadian rhythm and make the insomnia even worse.

But I'm still on the forum at 3 am sometimes, so...

It's okay! Sable is done and my game keeps crashing and making me feel terrible so I called it quits too. :P

It was fun when it worked though!

I miss the days of being able to have a notebook and pen without having them stolen by tiny hands lol.

And some never grow out of that! My brother spills something at dinner every single time. He can't seem to help it. My son seems to break anything he touches.

A good sense of humor helps, I think.

Also, it's a fair trade since you get to tell those stories forever.

Deviantart has that feature, but unfortunately its not much of a site for publishing literature (heh, fanfiction is classified as 'literature' technically).

I've found that for whatever reason, Mass Effect stories get much harsher reviews than Dragon Age ones. Even the controversial stuff! You can write about how much of an innocent little kitten Anders is, and barely get a funny look in return, while one mention of an Mass relay will get you pages of technical criticism about how these theoretical concepts don't work the way you think they work. I have no idea why.

Thanks, guys!  I've learned that I do not entirely suck at DAMP, and the Avvar dude's comments are hilarious.  Protect the tiny elf!  FernRain, Kadan, and Garnet: thanks for graciously carrying the noob :)

I'm in the same boat.  I learned to write fanfiction via the Harry Potter fandom, and while everyone was very nice, they were also unapologetic about constructive criticism.  It helped me get better and develop a thick skin toward criticism very quickly, but not everyone learned in that kind of environment.  Or even has any interest in it.

Nowadays if the author didn't ask for criticism (either here on the thread or as part of their fic), I don't give it.  And unfortunately, it's gotten me in the habit of being lazy about feedback.  I'm trying to break that habit now.

The multiplayer was fun, I'll be up for more later if anyone else wants to give it a go!

I'm about 2/3 of the way to getting the materials for the bard champion now.

I wouldn't mind working towards fighting the dragon so we can unlock the cosmetic for Skyhold ;).

I am a grown woman who still has to to stand idly by while my mother tells stories. :P

Though, for the most part, I would get into a lot of things because I was curious but also very honest about it. Like I'd open bottles of medicines but tell my mother I did it and that I didn't take any from the bottle, I just wanted to see what they looked like. Though I did once try eating one of those little silica desiccant packets that say not to eat them all over, but in my own defense, I wasn't literate yet. :P
