I understand and will be more careful with my comments. It's just a little strange to me because the general rule of the internet or any kind of public media is that once you put your work out there, you should expect to be judged. If you can't handle it, then perhaps you should wait until you are mentally ready to publicize your work.
I'm going to speak in generalities here, mainly from my experience as a writer and reader in fandom, so take this all as my opinions. ![]()
Most fanfic writers are hobbyists, and as such it's something meant to be fun, as well as a way to join the general conversation of the fandom.
Basically, if you do in-depth crit that isn't asked for, you're going into the playground and telling the kids they're playing wrong. You're allowed to do it of course, and some people are thick-skinned enough to take it... but by and large it seems that in my experience, it's best to go by the rule, "If you can't think of something nice to say, don't say anything at all". Some people really get their self-worth tied into their writing, and unwanted criticism can really hurt them.
Most people can see whether their story worked for other people in fandom, by looking at how positively their work was received via kudos and hit count, and occasionally comments. I generally wait until after about a week of exposure to the general public, before I decide whether my experiment was a failure or not. I do not ask for concrit, personally, because I'm not trying to impress anyone, I'm just having fun.
There are people who want concrit and advice, but usually they'll request it in their profile, or will ask for it at the beginning or end of their story.
