I've always been pretty girly in style/presentation. I remember one favorite outfit at the age of seven or so was a skirt, tights, a turtleneck, and tall boots. Which kind of sounds like me today, except I hate turtlenecks. I grew up to be hourglass shaped (like my grandma), so I actually sometimes enjoy playing with clothes that create an exaggerated femininity.
I used to experiment with makeup and then actually began wearing it at 14 or so. I love makeup. My face is a canvas that I get to apply colors on?! And this is socially acceptable? Yes, please. It's super fun since I get in moods, sometimes I 'feel' a color - like 'Today is a purple day' and purple must end up on my face somehow. This fall so far I've been doing all of these heavy eyeliner looks and loving them. I'm sure I'll get tired of it but for now, yes.
Though, like you, I had a phase that was different. Not goth, but I was dealing with a lot of insecurity and depression so I used to wear a lot of huge band shirts and flannel and jeans I'd kind of hide myself in. That lasted a year or two.
I've also always been fond of color, with red my favorite, though I'd also do things like have two pairs of shoes in different colors and deliberately wear a mixed pair, so I'd have one pink and one white, and then swap them when the original set wore out.
I am glad that in terms of play and in what I wore, I was generally left alone on it, so I was very self-directed. I don't think of toys or games as being 'girl' or 'boy' things, but I played with a mix of everything. Lego, dolls, cars, the play kitchen in my classroom, making truck paths, lots of video games.
I used to sometimes take over the kitchen for an hour or two and stand up dominos in order for them to fall. In lines, in circles, around objects. Or because I was using fabric paints and glue to create t-shirts.
