That Papa Lavellan one is pretty stinkin' funny

Oh oh oh! I got two thick stripes in my hair (they take like half of my right side) of turquoise and what is left of my violet. Once the turquoise fades (for some reason it takes forever) I'll dye again.Thinking about either pink, orange-red, lilac or a toner with some color... Or perhaps some combo...

I wouldn't mind geeky dresses or skirts, it's just something that doesn't really exist here

 

Well...if you want your wallet to cry, I've gotten a few things from Black Milk.  Crazy expensive, but awesome.  I have their Marauder's Map dress, which I wear all the time in summer.  And a limited edition bodycon Cthulhu dress, which I've yet to work up the courage to actually wear in public

Lavellan sat in the back patio of the Little Haven, grinning down at her phone.  She almost wished she'd waited to tell Sera about the date in person; she could just picture the shit-eating grin on her friend's face.

 

I'm not the one who helps her girlfriend light stuff on fire, she pointed out.  Are Dagna's eyebrows back?

 

And now, the grin in her mind's eye turned into a half-affectionate, half-exasperated huff.  stupid student health center.  next time, big fancy hospital downtown.  got a pirate bar across the street!

 

Do they even take your health insurance there?  Then she hastily added, the hospital, not the bar.

Lavellan snickered at the mental image, and gently pushed the worry to the back of her mind.  If Dagna and Sera hadn't killed themselves or done major property damage yet, they were probably going to be fine.  

 

"You like him."

 

Lavellan yelped and nearly dropped her phone, saving it from the asphalt with a wild grab.  Cole stood right next to her chair, which she carefully eased back to a polite distance.

 

"Cole, you need to stop sneaking up on people like that," she said, stuffing her phone back into the safety of her jacket.  "What if you'd startled that big qunari guy?  He could deck you."

 

"He wouldn't.  He's nice, even if there isn't enough nutmeg for his triple shot espresso."

 

"You're off for the day," but she pushed out a patio chair for him nevertheless.  "Sorry about the rush earlier.  I should've told Cass not to give you mornings."

 

"You like him," said Cole, as though he hadn't heard anything she'd said in the last minute.  He sat down, pale blue eyes never leaving her face.  "Solas."

 

Lavellan took a moment to choose her words.  "He's...interesting," she finally said.  Anyone with the confidence to ask out a stranger out of the blue certainly was.  Though, remembering Solas's words at the Shakespeare Festival, maybe it wasn't so random.  She'd certainly taken notice of him; it was hard not to, with his loud and snooty housemates always in tow.  And she prided herself on being able to recognize regulars.  Had she just been oblivious to his interest until Saturday?

 

"Can I take another coffee to him?" asked Cole.

 

"What?"

 

"Elvhen History and Modern Perspectives.  He likes having coffee in discussion, but he doesn't have time to come here."

 

No.  There was no goddamn way.  Yet the pieces slowly clicked together in Lavellan's head, and she burst out laughing at the sheer irony.

 

"Oh gods.  Solas is Sera's stick-in-the-mud TA?!"  She pulled out her phone and scrolled through their messaging history; sure enough, a bunch of texts from Sera last week, coming up with creative (and vulgar) nicknames for her history TA.  Most of them involved egg puns.  Somehow, almost halfway through the semester, Sera had never mentioned his actual name.

 

She'd never hear the end of it if Sera put two and two together.

 

"Are you in the same discussion as this other freshman?" Lavellan asked Cole, trying to keep her voice as casual as possible.  "Elf, blonde hair, looks like she cuts it with a kitchen knife?"

 

Cole flinched a little and shook his head.  "No.  'Monday can die in a fire.'  She doesn't have any classes today."

 

Lavellan tried not to let the relief show on her face.

 

"I don't think she likes me," said Cole in a very small voice.  "She thinks I'm creepy."

 

Sera wasn't entirely wrong.  Cole was odd, yes.  Creepy, not exactly. But so were a lot of people freshman year, and they grew out of it.

 

She reached over and placed a hand on Cole's shoulder.  "Take Solas that coffee," she said gently.  "For what it's worth, I think you're a sweet kid with a lot of potential."

 

He smiled absently, and got up from the patio chair.  Lavellan waited for him to leave before reading her latest text from Sera.

Modern AU's are definitely a trope and so are anything college related. But it's one of those fun one you can really make your own.

Okay, so, update on my reading of Feynite's fanfiction: Decided to skip Dread Wolf's Heart for now. I'll come back to it later if Looking Glass manages to impress which... it hasn't, so far. To that end -

 

(Spoilered because some people don't care and others probably won't like what I have to say about this)

- My God, Feynite has a bad case of Fanfic Protagonist Syndrome. I'm having flashbacks to those mountains of Origins fic where it turned out that the Warden could have children and made a great queen and had the Fade shining out her ass and, oh, Alistair's such a jerk for not believing in her and the power of their love. (Plus, of course, a third party that falls in love with Warden, assures her constantly of how great she is, how Alistair doesn't deserve her, but oh, she still loves him because she's just that perfect.) (And I should state here that no, I don't consider her Lavellan to be a Mary Sue. I use "Fanfic Protagonist Syndrome" to refer to stories, typically fix-it fics, where it's clear who's side the writer is on, no matter how incompetent, hypocritical, or superficial this makes all the other characters - including the protagonist - seem.)

 

And I just mean - seriously? Does Lavellan have no self-awareness at all? She's literally throwing food at him and showering him in glitter and contemplating tipping over soup tureens in the hope that it'll ruin his clothes - and then has the gall to call him petulant. And of course, she's oh-so-righteous in getting on him about his prejudices against the dwarves, all while she's disparaging the elvhen and their society every other paragraph. And jeez, how can no one but her see how terrible Elgar'nan is for burning innocent people alive all because they offended him - oh, never mind the girl was a terrorist who injured and endangered countless people, she was better than all of them anyway because the elvhen are all dicks unless they hate being elvhen. And oh, naturally, she can whip the two-hundred-year-old general's ass at swordplay, and then turns out to be a master of magic despite not even being a mage until that day. Like, that last one is some outright Mary-Sue-****.

 

So again, I'm encountered with the same problem. The plot and world are interesting, but again, the story seems to devote itself to making Solas (and everyone else) look bad so that Lavellan can look awesome in comparison. It's just... really difficult to sympathize and identify with a character who gets coddled so regularly by the narrative. Just - does it ever... you know, make Lavellan actually think about what she believes and feels? Examine her perspective? Point out that she's kinda being a little ****, just as snooty and superior and prejudiced as Solas was in her world? Because she is getting very, very annoying.

 

Also, I literally just met Haninan, but who wants to bet that he's the original Dread Wolf. And that in the unchanged timeline, Solas somehow ended up with his power, which is how he became the Dread Wolf. But in this timeline it'll go to Lavellan because she's so wonderful and righteous and, oh, Solas is such a jerk for not believing in her and the power of her love.

 

*Sigh* This is why I hate fix-it fic. It rarely pays any respect to what it's fixing.

(Plus, of course, a third party that falls in love with Warden, assures her constantly of how great she is, how Alistair doesn't deserve her, but oh, she still loves him because she's just that perfect.) (And I should state here that no, I don't consider her Lavellan to be a Mary Sue. I use "Fanfic Protagonist Syndrome" to refer to stories, typically fix-it fics, where it's clear who's side the writer is on, no matter how incompetent, hypocritical, or superficial this makes all the other characters - including the protagonist - seem.)

 

And I just mean - seriously? Does Lavellan have no self-awareness at all? She's literally throwing food at him and showering him in glitter and contemplating tipping over soup tureens in the hope that it'll ruin his clothes - and then has the gall to call him petulant. And of course, she's oh-so-righteous in getting on him about his prejudices against the dwarves, all while she's disparaging the elvhen and their society every other paragraph. And jeez, how can no one but her see how terrible Elgar'nan is for burning innocent people alive all because they offended him - oh, never mind the girl was a terrorist who injured and endangered countless people, she was better than all of them anyway because the elvhen are all dicks unless they hate being elvhen. And oh, naturally, she can whip the two-hundred-year-old general's ass at swordplay, and then turns out to be a master of magic despite not even being a mage until that day. Like, that last one is some outright Mary-Sue-****.

 

So again, I'm encountered with the same problem. The plot and world are interesting, but again, the story seems to devote itself to making Solas (and everyone else) look bad so that Lavellan can look awesome in comparison. It's just... really difficult to sympathize and identify with a character who gets coddled so regularly by the narrative. Just - does it ever... you know, make Lavellan actually think about what she believes and feels? Examine her perspective? Point out that she's kinda being a little ****, just as snooty and superior and prejudiced as Solas was in her world? Because she is getting very, very annoying.

 

Also, I literally just met Haninan, but who wants to bet that he's the original Dread Wolf. And that in the unchanged timeline, Solas somehow ended up with his power, which is how he became the Dread Wolf. But in this timeline it'll go to Lavellan because she's so wonderful and righteous and, oh, Solas is such a jerk for not believing in her and the power of her love.

 

*Sigh* This is why I hate fix-it fic. It rarely pays any respect to what it's fixing.

I actually hear you on some of this. I mean, don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying reading it mostly for the style, setting and I'm a sucker for characters, but I hear ya on some things.
