I don't really know how to feel about this. What other story reason could there be for "female only" if it doesn't involve babies in some form? Fine if the guy is straight, but specifying it's a story-significant reason is....hm.
I'm still quite happy in the end; I get my Iron Bull, my Dorian, and now Solas (oh yea, and Cullen? I keep forgetting about the poor boy!). I just never anticipated race-gating being that specific.
Things have calmed down since the reveal, I'm glad for that. This a game about choice, now I'll just make my dalish mage a female just for Solas. Now its between Blackwall and vivienne for the last li spot. This is the Solas thread, but I'm curious as who people prefer between these two.
I'm not adverse to the idea either, but I'm just really surprised people jumped on the "It must be because babies!!!" so quickly. I didn't even think about it until others brought it up first xD I still really don't think that's why though.

Vivienne, but only if she remains ambitious, cold, and power-hungry.
That said, I don't have a hardcore preference. Cullen and Solas were the two I wanted, and I lucked out this time. (IN YOUR FACE ME3 HA HA HA)
I'm guessing he's gated to Elves only because he's lived, really by himself, all his life, and maybe he doesn't know enough about other races or really trust other races because of what they've done to his people.
Idk, just guessing.

Well...Alistair's romance didn't involve babies. There's no point in jumping to conclusions on a baseless and random theory. Also, I saw the story significant portion as being about the race restriction, which could mean absolutely anything. It having to do with the eluvians and the world in between them has a greater chance than a baby.
I dunno, I just don't see much point in freaking out about the whole baby thing. We don't know anything yet! We will have to see how it turns out. Worrying won't do much, especially over a theory like that. Female characters and their romances aren't just about babies.

That's why a Vivienne romance would be interesting

Um... Yes, it... does? We're talking about him becoming a king, right?

I think the "super story reasons" are why he's locked to elves. The female-only thing might just be because he's straight. *shrug*
It could just be he's straight and doesn't want to romance non-elves cuz he may think it would be safer for both of them or because he thinks a human may not consider him an equal
Or maybe he does want kids someday but it's not like he's going to like try and woo the inquisitor just cuz she's female and can have kids you're gonna have to work to make him like you just like any companion.
Or maybe it's not that he specifically wants elven kids so much as he doesn't want to risk having not elven kids who would be treated like ****
Maybe it's a ton of reasons he's elf exclusive (and I assume he's straight for the gender thing)
It could be that since Solas's LI plot was added later--and it must have been, since originally we weren't even going to be able to play as elves--his story had to be... condensed? No. Specific, so that it took less time and word-budget, but maintained the level of detail as the rest of them.
Um... Yes, it... does? We're talking about him becoming a king, right?
Um, yes he became King but it was never a plot point in his romance.
It just occurred to me...this means both elves are female only LIs.

I think it more involves who he can stay with as king without Ferelden blowing up about it. No way would they accept a mage, elf or dwarf queen and after what just happened, everyone needed some stability. He chose his responsibility as king over the PC
The baby thing never factored in because it's impossible for two Wardens to have kids and Alistair knows that.

I find it interesting that people are jumping on the gender gate being story driven when it could be the elven part. I suddenly have a strong feeling it might be connected to how in Masked Empire, the elves could travel the Eluvian with no issues but humans could not. The gender part could be because his character is simply straight. I mean, I'm kind of glad that people don't accuse me of being straight to only have babies
Um, yes he became King but it was never a plot point in his romance.
But he still needs to have children.
It's just another reason why he can't have a non-noble wife, along with a race.

OH MY GOD
I HAVE TO READ THESE BOOKS
Um, yes he became King but it was never a plot point in his romance.
Tell that to my Warden he dumped because two Wardens have a difficult chance of producing children.
Honestly? That soured me on his character for a veeeeery long time, and it's why I'm wary of "babies" being a plot point at all.
But he still needs to have children.

Two wardens can't have children.
And even in DA2 there's no mention of plans for children. So it's not because of children.

It's the combination of both the gender and race gates that makes people think it's about babies. Being straight wouldn't cause it as much and just being gated to elves wouldn't cause it either.

Interesting! That could very well be the reason!

It's as much "jumping to conclusions" as theorizing it's based on race? We're all just guessing here; though you're right - it could be elf-specific reasons and not female-specific reasons. I don't even have a problem if it is down to him wanting to have children - people are allowed to want children without reducing women to babymakers - I just find it to be an interesting development.
I doubt it's all about babies....and he's straight cause well he's straight! He's only interested in women. I'm sure there is more to his story on why he is race gated...we'll just have to wait and see.

I thought they can, just the odds are lower. They practically can't if both are the wardens.
But he did mention that issue when talking to a non-noble pc in DAO. I remember dat. ![]()
