As for how the qunari are facing: I always took it as Solas probably let them surround him, so he could take them all out at one time. You can see some off at a pretty good distance too. He's got some range on those glowing eyes of his. ;D

Related to questions: I think Solas did in fact manipulate the convo to some degree. We saw that a lot during the main game. He manuvered plenty of conversations to his his benefit, just like a game of chess. I see some say that Solas was never a trickster, that the evenuris used it as slander, but I don't buy that. Being friends with Mythal, I think he'd have to be on her level intellectually, may have even learned a few things from her. He's way too smart for his own good.

I don't think he manipulated the mark in any way though. If anything, since it belonged him in to begin with, I'd say he just calmed it as only he would know how but it was steadily building all the while. And he's leading her closer to the eluvian while he's at it. He knows it won't take long so he explains while he can and doesn't mince words.

That's just my short thoughts on it though.

And because a tumblr post reminded me of the feels, the scene where you can say "Tel'abelas. If you care, give me the truth." and he backs away. I've seen a lot of people say it's because he's ashamed and deserves what she's saying. But to me it's more than that. He can't let her get too close. He has to keep his distance. Especially when she's hurting. The angry response results in his stiff posture because he has too much pride, and becomes defensive, to back down but he can barely look her in the face. Before that crumbles and gives way.

And I adore (in a heartbreaking way) the differences in him leaving between rival/friend and a romance. The romance leaving walk just has him looking crushed, with slumped shoulders, like part of him is defeated already.

*buries her face in a box of kleenex* Those are my feels for today. ...who am I kidding? Those are my feels every day.

He was playing hide-and-go-seek behind the Eluvian!

 Why was he walking away though? Since you're the only one that replied back I will pester you for all the answers!

Yeah, I don't know who's saying he doesn't have trickster traits, but come on. He might not be blatant like Sera, but he definitely does things to lead people to certain conclusions and other such manipulative stuff.

I don't mean to say he made it doing anything other than calm down, I just thought he might have chosen when to stop making it calm down. The timing for the Mark acting up again was too perfect! You mean like how Hawke, Stroud, and the Nightmare waited around for you to get over your shock about the decision the game was making you make? ...That was different! That was just a dialogue choice freeze. The Mark actually waited for your whole conversation to end! I think you're over thinking it. Quite possibly... I'm probably going crazy typing out a conversation to myself...

Thank you for your thoughts <3

I had to rewatch that part again!

Spoiler

Oh, he does step back as she moves towards him with the sad dialogue! *.*

And he allows her to get so close to him (kisskisskisskiss!) with the angry option! And then shakes the head (reminds me of the time he did it after Lavellan kissed him... although that was a happier memory) and moves away!

I love all the differences between friend, enemy, and lover! They really put in a lot of details with that! The angst lover in me loves that he's colder and more final with his lady love than the friend. Of course the regular part is like "NONONOSOLASYOUASS!"

*passes new box of kleenex* Solas and all dem feelz  ^_^

For the walking away bit my first impulse is to say because of drama. As in it's just a dramatic shot cinematic wise. The other part of me maybe thinks he didn't expect her to catch up so quickly? Like he intended to reach the eluvian and then wait there? Or maybe a scene was cut? All three? xD

To me the half glance back from him is kind of a "Oh, there you are."

I've watched those scenes so much now that her collapsing twice just makes me laugh. He couldn't be bothered to stop the mark right away and keep her from falling into a pool of water. He could have magicked the stone Vidisalla into a chair for her at least.

I also headcanon that their conversation keeps getting interrupted by her boots squelching from all of the water as she follows him, with awkward pauses now and then. Anything to lessen the pain of my shattered heart. *sigh*

As for the mark flaring at the perfect time, again probably more about scene drama than anything. I'm sure he can sense it but like in the scene if you try to attack him, his eyes flare to activate it. That didn't happen so my guess is just convenient timing.

You know, Weekes and the others involved with Solas deserve so much love for what they've done but I hope someone has given praise to the cinematic guy (I knew his name once. It now escapes me) for all of the hard work he put into those scenes as well. None of them had to give us what we ended up with and yet they did. Too amazing for words. *hogs all the kleenex*

Do you guys think he'll actually succeed? That we'll get to see Thedas sans-Veil? Because it sounds absolutely thrilling, I hope they have the nerve to go through with it. Blow up half of Thedas and make us desperately try to piece together whatever's left while everything is dripping in magic.

Also, I'd love it if Solas tore open the Veil and Hawke came tumbling out.

Because I'm still new to this, it's so hard, and people are incredibly perceptive to all sorts of flaws I wouldn't notice.

Around this time of day sleep deprivation can kick in and a tiny voice says, "TF, why do you even do this, drosophila? Come on, I know you want to give up and go to bed instead, because sleeping has 0.01% chance of failiure and embarrassing youself."

 Word, woman!

I contemplating changing my signature for a while and removing the ao3 link, hahah.

The cinematics were great :)

What kind of scares me is that it'll have to be the same ending for everyone, right? Unless it ends up being the last game. Hence the scared bit. But I think it'll come down in some form or another. There are so many codex entries about the veil weakening, either just because or because of all the death going on. So even if Solas fails or changes his mind, I can see the veil collapsing on it's own at some point.

That and both Morrigan/Keiran and Flemythal reference the Quiz as being the Herald of a new age. Something drastic will happen, that's for certain. I'm convinced that Flemythal wants it gone for her own reasons otherwise why would she have helped him. Maybe Solas is doomed to fail (whether by 'death' or the power of Lavellan's loving backhand) but she finishes the job just enough to suit her goals.

All this build up for it and then nothing happens? Bah.

Either way I'm super curious. Just for that alone and not just possible closure to the romance arc.

Quick question about the Masked Empire

Well, his guise was that he's Dalish. It was probably more for easy interaction with the Dalish (who'd be most likely to have any information about the eluvians) than anything else

Omg, Hawke seeing Solas post Veil shatter and they're the only two who survived.

And it's sassy Hawke. Angry sassy Hawke.

I'm writing something at the moment, and it just occurred to me that it's the first time I've tried to write anything big that was actually set in Thedas. I've written about Hawke plenty of times but never set where it ought to be. I think I've taken for granted just how insanely large and complicated this universe is! There's too much that needs saying and not enough time to say it!

Also, does anyone else have massive trouble writing Solas? His dialogue intimidates me. He's so jolly multifaceted, I'm terrified I'll forget about one facet and everything will fall apart.

Solas is hard :(

Also I apologize if I am replying in mutiples, but I am trying to catch up with the thread (it's alive when I am passed out, and moves about 2 pages while I am not. ... TIme zones.)

Oh dear, I think you may be right to be afraid. Kinda like in Mass Effect 3, when they realised they'd introduced too many romance options that not all could have meaningful impact on the third game so everyone from the second was pretty much shelved. I felt pretty burned since I went for Thane first time round, but anyone who went after Miranda, who was framed as being magnificently important in 2, must have been so let down when she was barely present at all.

They might do something like Inquisition, and start the game with the disaster of the broken veil and a new protagonist stumbling around and trying to figure out why they're suddenly a mage. i have a terrible suspicion that Solas/Lavellan will barely get a look in.

Damn, I just depressed myself. Uplifting picture to compensate:

Solas is hard :(

I keep hearing this. Now I think I'm probably deeply delusional as to how well it works, but I actually like writing about Solas, both his dialogue and POV. The only downside for me is how depressing it can get. Anytime I see things through his eyes, I grab a pillow and a blanket and head for the feels corner.

The feels corner does have some cute fluffy animals.

I'm still here.  But feeling kind of inspired tonight. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

Writing Solas, I think can be done with remembering his style of speech - deliberate, careful, there are rare moments when he breaks his own patterns, like using contractions or a brief stutter of sorts, but these usually accompany very strong emotion.

The many moods of Solas are also fun to think about. Sometimes he's goofy "Is that a serious question?" Solas, who is probably enjoying just being Solas again, without expectations (even as there's an undercurrent we now know about, of a plan happening). We have angry and upset at the mages who hurt Wisdom, we have contemplative Solas, Winter Palace - "Hunt well!" and enjoys court intrigue Solas, stumbling over his words on the balcony Solas.

Trespasser Solas...in his three flavors.

Many facets, and highly fascinating.
