Teaser: He is taller than most men, far taller than she, and Ellorian knows his head must be bowed like a penitent at prayer for his hot breath to stir the fine hairs at the back of her neck.
Done. My score is 34 when excluding any plot by BioWare. Which is in fact very high.
Meh.
*types on*
No, no, I want to know more! What are some Mary Sues that would pass?
The first one that comes to mind is one of my own characters, back when I followed the test obsessively. I made sure to feed her through the test and carefully cultivate her into a "guaranteed" non-Sue and, happy with my efforts, I turned her story into my writing group at the time - only to get roasted in critique. Why? "She's boring as hell and everyone still loves her!" Well. :| I believe TvTropes prefers the term Anti-Sue.
But to add to what Sable said - it is true that most BioWare PCs are Sues by nature, with the entire game world bending over backwards so that they can solve all the problems and fix all the things. This is actually somewhat excusable, though - of course you are the most competent character around, because otherwise the game would just be you sitting back and watching other people be normal human beings and solve their problems themselves. So it's also true that different mediums allow for different levels of Sue-ishness, and that sometimes a Sue actually can be done in such a way that's still enjoyable.
I like to cite Shepard as a character who's a complete Sue - but you just don't care because you have so much damn fun being them. Their Sue-ishness makes them a great escape character, and since you literally are the Sue, it's a lot easier to bear. Unfortunately, this makes the transfer to more disconnected medium like fanfic a little jarring, and transferring a character exactly as they are, Sue-ishness and all, can end in disaster.
And then, to complicate the situation further, I've seen fanfic writers who manage to maintain Sue-ishness and still make it enjoyable. Akg.writes has a Shenko Mass Effect fic called Manipulations, where all the characters have a touch of the Sue to them (Shepard herself especially, but Alenko and Miranda to a smaller degree too) but they still manage to be interesting, maybe because everyone's hyper competent to the point where they just seem normal compared to each other.
Ah, sorry for misunderstanding.
Honestly, I would put DA:I Cullen at least somewhat in that category, though certainly not full-on Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Before I go any further, let me make a few things clear.
I like Cullen. But I think the narrative bent around him to make him a more sympathetic Inner Circle member in DA:I. I'm not saying that's inherently a bad thing. I'm not saying he's evil or abusive or the writers are lazy or any of that nonsense. In fact, I think his writer did an admirable job given how inconsistent his earlier portrayal can be.
I'm simply saying that story elements (particularly the ones about lyrium addiction) were adjusted to fit DA:I Cullen rather than the other way around. This is IMO a relatively minor example of the narrative conforming to the character. I didn't find it obnoxious or anything. But I did notice it.
I didn't call him Golden Boy for no reason. ![]()
Alright guys sorry once again for being off topic I was going to post the poojabber drawings I did lol but I don't know how to do it, I thought I would ask you guys before anyone else
the pictures are in my laptop and phone also if that helps at all. God so silly can't even use a computer.
What I do is go to this site: http://tinypic.com
and input my files. It then gives me url's to put into the "image" input function of BSN (this icon:
). Always use the bottom url! The others don't work, I think.
Dream of the Endless scores incredibly high. As would Solas, for that matter, if you fed him through. I wouldn't consider either to be Mary Sues. The narrative doesn't let either of them get away with their crap.

Yeah, sometimes I feel like they white-washed Cullen a bit. Even his Inquisition portrayal gets this a bit. Like, I look at normal, flesh-and-blood Cullen, and then I look at the things Cullen suggests for War Table missions and it's like, damn son, where's that guy disappear to when he steps out of the war room?
Just some of the stuff for his war table missions is so snarky and ruthless and the worst part is I... kinda prefer that interpretation.
Taking Mary Sue litmus test.

"Does your character become a magically enhanced being, possibly with new powers or looks?"
Yes, but it's not my fault! BioWare fails.
ugh this bothers me. If a person is freaking dropped into another world that's GOVERNED BY MAGIC as well as completely different from the one we know, of course the character is going to change somehow. Also, I find it extremely boring to just watch a regular person flounder around not being able to do anything. They have to be special somehow, or, to me, it's just hella boring
I got 28. I blame it on the animals. Remus and Hanin adore her
That and she's just special
I didn't call him Golden Boy for no reason.
Like I said, still like his character. And I'm certainly guilty of bending a few things in my Lavellan's favor post-Trespasser. I figure she has enough crap on her plate already. So maybe the process of healing should be more painful, or her clan should turn on her, or the Inner Circle should be more worried about how emotionally compromised she is vis-a-vis Solas. But you know what? (spoiler for profanity)
I'll let Weekes supply the angst. He's better at it than I am anyway.
I've been writing fanfiction since 2007 and if I've learned anything in all that time it's that you have to write what makes you happy. You're writing to tell a story and as long as that story is true to what you want, then nothing else matters. Edits can come later. The first draft is most times the most heartfelt and genuine and you can't sit there worrying about rules or labels. Free write what's in your heart at that moment.
Not everyone will love what you make. They won't all hate it either. You'll eventually draw a crowd that enjoys your particular style because no one writes the same way, nor should they try to. Uniqueness is what keeps it interesting.
Lose yourself in the story unfolding inside your head and trim the details later or else you'll lose sight of the emotions you're trying to convey.
Even if you're too scared to share it right away, tuck it in a safe place until you do feel comfortable. Let it out one person at a time if you have to. Just write~
Well said.
For me fanfic is still first and foremost about mental masturbation.
There are the technical things: Writing in a way that's easy and pleasant to read, knowing how to set up a scene, coming up with good lines, how to pick just the right words to evoke the emotion you're going for, grammar. I try my best to improve on those.
But when it comes to plot, characters, and other high-level things, this is pretty much what goes on in my head:
drosophila: Wouldn't it be cool if Lavellan lived in the sewers?
drosophila: Yes, sewer!Lavellan is win.
drosophila: OK, let's see how to work that into a plot.
Anybody know any good fantasy music that might be helpful for writing Elvhenan? I know this one song:
that sounds pretty elfy, but can't really find many others that I like ![]()

I don't know who you are or why you liked my post but I want you to know your username makes me simultaneously delighted and irrationally angry.

Solas is hard
.... gosh I have a dirty mind.
ROFL! I was just gonna say... you are all discussing fan fiction, and then someone says "Solas is hard".... followed by a sad face?
Why is Janic the only one who said anything? hahahaha
Weeeird. My Origin account told me it just finished downloading Dragon Age Inquisition DD and I'm like... it was already downloaded, what are you telling me? Mysteries, I tell you.
I had a terrible idea. I just watched Crimson Peak so you'll have to excuse my dark thoughts. What if Cole inhabited Solas to ... I don't know, instill him with some Compassion. Or some such. Then of course, it got all warped up. Abomination occurs. You have to kill Cole and Solas. D:
Is that even possible? Tell me it's not.
Hypothetically, of course.

We are all very innocent creatures in here. Verrrrrry innocent.

Speaking of Cole. IIRC one of the writers/devs/somebody-BioWare-shaped said that Cole knew who Solas was and, until the end of the base game, what his intentions were all along. Why didn't our Spirit of Compassion think, "Hey, wow, he's going to hurt a lot of people!" and then proceed to murderknife? (Plot armor aside.
)
There's probably a really reasonable explanation but because I haven't spelt my mind's just a puddle of dribble right now.

That's actually a really plausible concept ... oh god.
You just have to give me the sads =3=
If someone writes this I'd read it right away, while preparing for some tears and gross sobbing.
I feel like whenever I read Solas fanfiction I should always come prepared with a good 2-ply cleanex box just incase. He's just such an inherently sad character ![]()

I'm sorry D:
I was thinking of a story along those lines, but I wasn't sure if it would make sense or not. Poke holes in it for me o.o

As I understand it, it's often cited as a hint that Solas' plan isn't as bleak as it seems. I wonder if that's just wishful thinking, though.
I've also seen it said that Cole believes he can be redeemed, but then, Cole doesn't seem to make much of an effort to do so. He's really only got one line that can be interpreted as an attempt to sway Solas from his path. That whole "You could let them go" bit, but even then, I don't know.
And thirdly, I've seen it said that even Spirit Cole is just a little corrupt, and his friendship with Solas is clouding his judgement.
I've also seen people say that it's just bad writing. Which, to be fair, is always a possibility. ![]()

I found this and I just had to
(I'm sorry)
Anyways, honestly write whatever you want, within sense. The idea is plausible, but whether or not you can convince the readers of the situation is completely based on how you write it. I would make it intensely emotional. Go big or go home
. Generally, if you believe in what you're writing, that should carry into how it reads. This is all really vague, I know, but I don't really know how you plan on going about it x-x

Oh I have the bad habit of saying what I think when I see something like this...and it's hard for me NOT to see the dirty stuff. n__n''
Anybody know any good fantasy music that might be helpful for writing Elvhenan? I know this one song:
I HC Elvhenan to be like the Homeland (a.k.a. Bulgaria). So any music I associate with it is traditional Bulgarian music. Which can be a little haunted and weird, so for me it fits. ![]()
