I totally feel you on that whole adaption-topic! If I can I watch the movie first and read the book (in my case only books, 'cause I'm not into comics) later. In that order I can enjoy the book as an expansion of the story with more scenes and more insight and all that. If I had to choose between no more movies and no more books I would never hesitate to choose books! They are imo a far superior medium to almost any other medium. Choosing between books and RP videogames would be harder, though. But I think I would still go with books.

I also agree on your views regarding Mary Sue characters. I personally can't stand them and I'll be very annoyed really fast and stop reading.

For my own characters I do use the test that was discussed a few pages before, although I just use it as an indicator if I'm overdoing things. You described it pretty well as seeing characters as children and yes, I do love mine and of course don't want others to not like them (I'm bad at writing villains, btw. ^^) But I hardly ever just write without any kind of concept and especially for longer stories I flesh out my character's personalities before I start writing. Or sometimes after I introduced them. I have whole sheets for any of them with every little detail that I need to know about them, most of it the reader will never know. I find it easier this way to write consistent characters. Of course they can and they do change due to their experiences and whatnot, but still. Someone who is a coward will never be the first to run down a villain in my stories. Unless she/he has a really good reason to.

Also I tend to do what you noticed with the Lavellans. I hardly ever describe my characters, only if certain aspects of their looks are important for whatever reason. They do have a name though and a fully fleshed out personality. But I personally don't like to read through lines and lines of every little detail of the character's look and clothing. I like to let my readers imagine the character the way they want to.

And to make this all relevant to the thread - Solas!

Edit: Does anyone know if the multiplayer is in any way region gated? I would love to play but I'm not sure that's even possible with accounts from NA and EU.

I die a little inside every time someone tells me they hate reading. Do you have a least favorite book to movie adaption? I read books before I see movies most of the time, partially because I read a lot and books usually get read before the movie is even in production. My sister watches movies then reads, but I dunno, that always seemed like you were spoiling the better version for yourslef. Plot twists and emotional points are going to be so much more impacting as you're reading it for the first time, but then if you've already watched the movie you already vaguely know what is going to happen.

That's a great idea with writing out little biographies for your characters, it must be great for helping you get to know them and being prepared for what type of impact they'll have in your story!

And to keep this Solas related, I like that picture!

Unhardened Alastair as your Commander... He's always unsure if he's made the right decisions and at least once a week he shows up to the war council and has forgotten his pants

Wynne is the ambassador and she treats everyone like children and reminds them how they have a responsibility to Thedas first.

Vlk3 brought up a great point Janic. It depend a lot on if you're okay with metagaming (am I using this correctly?) or not and if you prefer straight roleplaying how you can validate your Inquisitor's actions.

On a metagame note I personally find it unlikely that Solas has control over the Well drinker. It was Mythal's will and again, as Vlk3 said, Solas took Mythal's power... he didn't actually become Mythal. I doubt that drinking or not drinking it will effect whether or not Solas succeeds though. That's just too big of a deviation in outcomes... unless DA4 is the last game. More likely I think, as people on the thread before have theorized, the Well drinker will be forced to do something, say release the Evanuris. I don't even think it will kill them, because can you honestly see the devs killing Morrigan (unless it's the last game, but even then I find it unlikely)?

On the roleplaying side of it think of all the reasons your Inquisitor would drink from it. I say would because I find the reasons for not drinking are a lot simpler-- it's the Well of Sorrows, who hears that and decides to take a sip?

Reasons for drinking:

You don't trust Morrigan and don't want her to have that power

You, like Morrigan, don't believe in the Creators and don't think there is anyone to activate the geas on you (if you knew there was a geas).

You simply want more power

As a Dalish,

You don't want a shem drinking from the Well or being the one to take from such great source of your people's heritage.

You feel obligated because of your heritage to drink

You want the knowledge about your people's heritage

You do believe in Mythal and think this is your duty as an elf

My mage Lavellan drank from the Well. Mostly because of the lost knowledge, partially because she didn't trust Morrigan all that much, and also because she felt it was her duty. It didn't help that she didn't think the Creators existed *stares at Solas pointedly*

And on the metagaming level I thought she'd be the most likely out of all my Inquisitor's to do something that stupid, so I wanted the variety.

my mage Lavellan drank because she does not KNOW Morrigan even though I do and I felt like if I was my inkys place it would feel like she was hungry of the well's power because of all the knowledge and that inky would make sure to use the power of it well... but then now that I have a rogue and I am not sure anymore because yes I also feel like it is Mythal's will that inky would have to do whatever she commanded her to do even if SOLAS would disagree with Mythal in the end (everything is possible) at least my inky would have her own decision to make without anyone's command.... so I think I might not drink from the well this time. ( my rogue will be my canon )

Then again.. also as my mage one drank...  there also was one... very.... stupid reason..... Because I got tame the dragon and I did not need to fight the ancient elves in trespasser XD (I mean the first time I did not even know if I would have to but I played a second gameplay and then now is my rogue archer gameplay)

So, is the Solas Romance a very good one? I'm tempted to do it ever since Trespasser. This will mean, I have to make a new female elf just for Solas. I'm not too fond of playing elves, but I can deal with a female elf. A male elf? I don't even want to think about it.

I've been reading a good amount of fanfiction lately and I think it's very clever of writers that make their Lavellans vague, don't give them a name, don't describe them-- it allows the reader to put their Lavellan/themself into the situation so they're more likely to forgive trespasses. This is not saying you can't make a fully formed, named, and described Lavellan and her be well received, I just think it takes more work.

Let's test this assumption about readers:

Mayriya Lavellan - A mage, seems to be in her late twenties/early thirties. Has unusual views on religion and the past compared to her clan and most of the Dalish in general, which seems to have made her feel like an outsider at some point. Seems worldly and pragmatic enough to be able to handle Zevran, but still shocked by some of his more brutal antics. Interested in learning more about healing magic. Has a spirit arm.

Nirwen Lavellan - A very dangerous Lavellan. She will draw you in with kindness and patience, but if you don't watch out, she could totally stab you. Family is very important to her, and she has a very special relationship with her friend Nehn. Totally fails at laundry.

Clariel Lavellan - Very young, innocent, and naive at matters of the heart, but hardy otherwise. Loves complicated contraptions. Seems to deal with emotional difficulty by working harder, and is generally very level-headed and not drama-prone. Really digs the Avvar. And I don't know how 'canon' it is, but I love the idea of her dealing with blooming first love by prouncing around and killing corpses in the Fallow Mire.

Some Lavellans that are not from the blanketfort:

Rial Lavellan from Apotheosis - The Dalishest Lavellan ever. Does not like wearing shoes and panties. Free spirit, can play the Game as Inquisitor, but can disregard it completely too, if something else is more important to her. It was sad watching her having to let go bit by bit of everything she holds dear about her clan, the Creators, the elves as one people. I cried a little when I read these lines from the latest story about her:

“Oh, Maker forbid you settle for anything so mundane.”

“You swear by a new god, I see.”

“The other ones didn’t pan out.”

Isii Lavellan from Bread Wolf - I love Isii. She's strong and stubborn, but not to an unreasonable degree. Not afraid to say what she wants. Clever. I wish she would get into a little more trouble, but the fic is still going.

Ellana Lavellan from Doughnut Rebel - She is shy and anxious in such a cute way. Really, the most adorkable Lavellan, especially in combination with the Solas in that fic. Insecure about her heritage. Does not get along with her brother, I really don't get why, her brother's awesome.

I like to read stories like that, with Lavellans that have personalities, the more different than mine, the better. Please, let me know more of your Lavellans. Don't worry about me being able to insert mine. She's already quite keen in inserting herself where she doesn't belong.

If the concept of writing a vague character is important to you as a writer, by all means, follow your inspiration. But for as long as I can help shape this community, I will not support expressing one's ideas less, especially for the sake of metrics.

I die a little inside every time someone tells me they hate reading. Do you have a least favorite book to movie adaption? I read books before I see movies most of the time, partially because I read a lot and books usually get read before the movie is even in production. And to keep this Solas related, I like that picture!

Yepp, same for me. And honestly I don't get what there is not to like about reading. In my experience only people who have a very limited imagination do not like books. Or people who just never have been taught that it is fun. My boyfriend is an example for that. His mother never read to him or with him when he was a child, he was put in front of the television (as she is doing with her grandchild now, too, which I find very sad). I can't remember when he started reading, but it was the vampire chronicles series by Anne Rice that caught him. He owns all the books and had read them all. Later we co-read the Song of Ice and Fire series. But overall he learned so many things when he got to know me and my family; his is pretty much disfunctional with all kinds of problems and with me and my family he got a sense of what all this can be like. But that's another topic.

So btt: A least favorite adaptation .. I have to think about that. There are many that I don't like much, almost everyone tbh. I'm sure you know how it is when you wait for your most favorite scene of a book and it just never happens in the movie? Or it is completey changed and you just hink "ugh, wtf ist this"? I try to view movies as another medium and therefore try not to compare too much, but I often just can't help it. Especially if they changed things for no apparent reason.

Recently the worst adaption that I can think of was the Maze Runner. I read the trilogy during this year's reading challenge and I kinda liked it (yeah it's a YA series and has its flaws, but overall it was a good and quick read and the story was okay). Then I watched the movie and it seemed everything was changed except for the title, the maze and some names. Ugh, it was really bad. I don't even want to watch the second part.

Growing up with Harry Potter the movies were a thing, too, but they are okay, mostly. Order of the Phoenix was the worst. And since that film the following ones were hard to understand for people who did not read the books.

Oh, I guess I know what the worst adaptation is: Queen of the Damned. Hell no. No. No. No. (Imagine there is a "nope nope nope" gif here.) That was really really really bad - an abomination I never want to see again. Two or three books mashed into one film, picking only things that they liked, changing everything else and depicting the characters completely wrong. It was awful. Do you know it? And do you happen to know the book(s)?

I have been writing since I was able to, but some time I wanted to become more professional and looked up things like plotting and stuff. That's when I stumbled across a great (but German) website by a female author who gave tipps for writing, teaching techniques and stuff and it was really great. There was a forum too where people could post their stories for feedback or ask about things they were not able to research and yeah, I love it. :D This is where I got the tipp with the character sheets. There also was a questionnaire with 100 questions directed at your character, although I just fill it in for the main protagonists. It helps to create realistic characters.

That picture of Solas is so lovely, I just .. love it. (Ahem, don't judge my writing skills upon what I'm writing here, please. I'm much better in my own language. :D )

He's straight, so male elf is outta question if you're after him.

It;s a good romance, yes; it will probably make you want to kick him in his groin too, or alternatively cry in the corner. But it's something worth trying, I'd say.

As you can clearly see, we love it. :P

I feel like I wouldn't have done a very good job with sticking to what my Lavellan would actually say if Solas had revealed himself at Crestwood.

Solas: ... I am Fen'Harel.

Me: That's so awesome! We're dating a god!

Me taking away Lavellan's will as a character: That's so awesome! I'm dating a god!

Solas: That was not the reaction I had expected.

How do you guys go about speaking of your Lavellan and your relationship with Solas? Do you say my not-god not-so-hobo-anymore elf Solas, Lavellan's not-god not-so-hobo-anymore elf Solas, or our not-god not-so-hobo-anymore elf Solas usually?

Yes! It's my favorite in Inquisition and many people's favorite all around! Trespasser was amazing (amazing as in emotional, dramatic, and traumatic!) with the romance!

Elves are so pretty! What race do you usually play as? I only ever do humans and elves as canons and firsts, it takes awhile for me to motivate myself with the other races, and I prefer playing as a female.
