I knew what would happen in the end, the entire game was building to it so I tried to prepare myself mentally beforehand...

Even though I didn't agree with a lot of the things Chloe said and did I still really liked her and her character and she was still Max's dearest friend.

But I couldn't do that, I couldn't sacrifice thousands for one, even if most of those people have no names or faces, I just couldn't.

I cried after the funeral started... It was hard watching her get shot, it hit me hard

 

Oh god if there would be a Chloe situation with Solas in the next DA I would flip.

Revas liked to wander off into the woods by herself whenever she could and practicing magic.  She tended to get in trouble around the camp for accidently setting things on fire and asking questions all the time.

I've got mixed opinions about the LiS endings;

The problem I have with the ending was the same one that bothers me about Donnie Darko and the Final Destination films, where we have a Shaggy Dog Story where death is the solution to a problem that only existed because an otherworldy influence interfered with events in the first place.

 

Seriously, if Frank the Bunny had never got Donnie out of bed, if Max was not able to rewind time and without the premonitions in Final Destination, then all of the characters would have died as they were supposed to and nothing would have spiralled out of control, thus forcing the universe to either contrive a means to course-correct itself by bumping them off, or going back and preventing them from being saved in the first place.

 

Philosophically I guess we could say it was a study on the nature of people confronted with a situation where they cannot win and that events are outside their control, but at the same time, as a storytelling means it feels extremely cheap and contrived because the entire game is rigged against the protagonists from the start.

 

And you have to feel bad for Max, since the universe seems to really loathe her for some reason?

 

She didn't even realise that punk chick was Chloe before the incident in the bathroom because they had not seen each other since she moved back. That means the only result of the events of Life is Strange is... that Max is forced to live a week of hell, get drugged and assaulted, regain her best friend, only to lose her several times, then be forced with the choice of saving her friend or letting thousands die?

 

Personally, I'd have liked to have had some more options;

 

Maybe one where Max sacrifices herself instead of Chloe (a Heroic Sacrifice ending), one where Max decides that she's going to continue trying to save Chloe regardless (the Madoka Magica ending) or one where Max finally just snaps, having had enough of being screwed around by time and vows that she will save everyone and the universe will just have to deal (the Time Lord Victorious ending).

 

I think what really bothers me is that we were given the illusion of choice, but ultimately were railroaded to sacrifice Chloe as the "good" ending.

You've summed up my issues with the ending completely.  I also hated the fact that we'd been teased with a golden ending (the winning the contest reality) earlier in the episode and the devs then made it clear that this reality was never going to happen.  You cannot just give players the golden ending and then never give them the option of achieving it.

On Solas' reaction to 21st century society, if he woke up here (I can't find the original post to quote in my just-woken-up state):

I think he'd possibly appreciate the ingenuity of mortals and the fact that we've achieved a lot of functions the Elvhen had through technology rather than magic. When I first found out about the Vir'Dirthara, I was struck by how similarly it functions to parts of the internet: a compendium of knowledge with a central interface accessible from anywhere, at any time. I imagine that given how the Eluvians link everywhere instantaneously, you could probably have realms which other functions - e.g. you'd possibly have streets of cafés and restuarants, where you could catch a coffee with any friend you have in the world - in the flesh. Whilst we don't have that level of communication or transportation infrastructure yet, it's possibly closer to the level Solas is used to.

I would imagine it'd be very alien though. Culturally, I'm not sure what he'd think - we're a fast-paced people who are constantly focussed on time, moreso with the development of communication & information technology than in comparison to a hundred and fifty years ago. He'd probably find some aspects of our society, such as the prevalence of advertising or the quality of pop music, completely vapid (I would love to prove him wrong on pop music though, oh Solas you old fart). He'd probably find the fact that most of the world lives in poverty appalling (then again, how much better were the Elvhen with slavery?) and find it quite sad that most people seem to be resigned to it, as 'a fact of life'. Definitely a culture shock. It'd be a bizarre scenario where in a lot of ways we're a very distorted mirror image of home to him, superficially similar, culturally alien.

I'd feel quite sorry for him, to be honest I would love to sit down and chat with the guy though, if the opportunity presented itself. He's one of those characters who I really want to take for a coffee and pick their brain.

Question: if Solas was actually transported into the real world, what kind of interaction would you have with him? what kind of relationship?

(actually, on that note, does anyone know of a fiction like that? you see OC in [fictional world] fanfic all the time, but I don't think I've ever seen anything about a canonical character being transported into the real world.)

Big Finish are delighted to announce that fan-favourite actor Gareth David-Lloyd will star as Ianto Jones for the second release in our new series of Torchwood Audio Dramas.
 
Gareth appeared throughout the first three series of the popular BBC show created by Russell T Davies. A mild-mannered administrator for the Torchwood team, Ianto helped defend Cardiff from the horrors of the rift, and aided the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) in a battle against the Daleks in two episodes of Doctor Who.
 
Ianto made his final TV appearance in the 2009 mini-series Children of Earth, but his popularity and legacy has stood the test of time, with a special commemorative memorial for the character erected in Cardiff Bay.

 
I think I finally have a reason to watch Torchwood again.

OH MY GOD... I just found out where DA might have taken the name "Trevelyan".

 

Meet James Bond's villain from "GoldenEye" - Alec Trevelyan.

 

 

That's... quite funny really. Anyway, I've always suspected that "Lavellan" may simply be distorted Llewellyn/Llywelyn (it's a Welsh name - appropriate, given that a lot of how Elvhen sounds has been 'inspired' by Welsh), but I didn't think other surnames could be based on something either taken from RL or other franchises/movies. Now I wonder what Adaar and Cadash could be inspired by.

 

Trevelyan is a Cornish name, actually.  Yeah, it's also the name of a Bond villain but it's also a recognised family name and commonish in Cornwall and the West Country.  The Marcher states seem to have a real 'pre union UK vibe going on' (what with Starkhaven having Scottish accents, Kirkwall being the name of a town on Orkney and the Trevelyan family being the rulers of Ostwick).  The fact that they seem happy to be separate City States and fight among themselves, but the moment an outsider comes in and starts making trouble it's 'hey, you talking crap about my family?  Only I get to talk crap about them!' helps with this mental image.

You know I'd quite like to see a full blown arrogant and self absorbed Dalish Inquisitor, who was 100% on board with the creators etc. I don't have the nerve to play as someone like that, and I don't think the game lets you either, but imagine the Herald of Andraste who openly says 'screw you, I'm Dalish' to just everyone. Everyone's expecting her to suck it up and play by the Orlesian and Fereldan rules, instead she runs the Inquisition like a really big clan. 

 

 

 

A lot of writers, even professional ones, seem to fall into the trap of 'us vs them', where they're almost afraid to show humanity in the enemy lest we question the righteousness of our hero. It's an easy trap to fall into, and sometimes even intentionally done. Note the Empire from Star Wars, there were no redeeming features at all, but it didn't matter because it wasn't trying to be a nuanced story. It's really what sets Bioware apart usually, because nobody is 100% evil, they all have shades of a broken person just trying to do what they think is right. I think you're right that Looking Glass has made the Evhen too much a 'them', but its more noticeable because its Dragon Age, where even Loghain had plenty of redeeming features. 

 

Can I introduce you to Revas Lavellan, First of Clan Lavellan?  She's not stuck up or arrogant about being Dalish (she takes the 'we're all the same people' option during the first banter with Solas in Haven) but she's a total elfy elf, hates The Game (although turns out to kick ass at it when pressed) and runs the Inquisition like it's a Clan (since that's what she was trained to do from a young age).  She believes 100% in the Creators and has a kind of ?????? reaction to anything Andrastian.  Josie is always trying to get her to wear shoes.

 

Of course, I've had to headcanon a lot of this since the game doesn't really let me play Revas the way I want to.  Trespasser helped a little as talking with Sera about the Creators let me make it clear that her faith had been completely destroyed and she was not in any way okay.  Having Sera as a BFF really helped for that part.

*Sigh* What would you like me to say? I understand that Lavellan's bitter. I understand that she's going through a lot, I understand that she's probably handling it well, all things considered - but I am... quite done, with reading Lavellan's constant takedown of the elvhen, for things her people do, for things she's done herself, for things she's doing herself, without anyone even pointing out that, hey, she's being a bit of a twit. The story, at least to me, doesn't raise a finger to dissuade her of this attitude, and at times seems to twist itself to validate it. I have no problem with the majority of protagonists, but I have quite an issue with hypocritical, short-sighted ones (And ones written to be an idiot, mostly for the same reason - ignorance that's incessant, undispelled, especially when it leads to them being jerks to others.) At this point, it's not so much her behavior as the story's seeming disinterest in changing it.

 

Nonetheless, the character hasn't bugged me enough to keep me from reading further. She's just easily the worst part of the story for me.

 

And I'd appreciate it if we refrained from making comments questioning my ability to enjoy other media, thank you.

 

On Elvhenan - I'm not sure what humanity was shown in the handmaiden's, given that one literally said to force Lavellan to take the vallaslin. Or in the librarian, who's still shown to be suspicious and distasteful of her. And I did, actually, appreciate the nuanced view to Shira - I even remember thinking that it was nice that she wasn't some cackling lunatic or something. Unfortunately, it was immediately followed up by Lavellan somehow forgetting she attacked an entire room of people and treating her like some innocent woman who was randomly and tortuously killed by Elgar'nan, so, it sort of only feeds into my "The only good characters are the ones that hate the elvhen" thing. Which, y'know, Ess feeds into as well.

Alright, that comment about you and other fictional characters was pretty snippy. I apologise for the tone. However, I was definitely questioning something. Not your 'ability' - more of a values/expectations stance. It seems like it would be far too easy to pull apart just about any fictional character out there on the grounds that they don't always behave rationally or exemplify a perfectly balanced and nuanced view of the world. You've made your point that Feynite's writing of Lavellan seems to err more egregiously for you on this front than most other characters. I'll accept that.

 

Mythal's handmaids: one suggests forcing the vallaslin on her, the other tries to reason with her. One treats her less like a person, one more, even though she must appear like an emotionless construct to both.

 

The librarian - when Compassion tells him he's being cruel, it does give him pause. However, he still has no way of knowing that Lavellan is a real person, because he can't read emotions. He's being cruel but not malicious. That's very human.

 

Shira's execution, and Lavellan's negative reaction to it. I believe that's due to the summary nature of the sentence, and the vindictiveness with which it's carried out. No trial - just mind-reading, and then slow public immolation. One doesn't need to dismiss the crime in order to be really offended by how the punishment is carried out.

 

Ess hates the Elvhen? Is this because she was eager to get Pride out of her tavern? She's uncomfortable around nobles, like many would be in a position of relative social disadvantage. I don't know if that means she's presented as hating the whole society - her place in it, maybe. It seems like a reasonable portrait of someone in a society with rigid social classes, who is in some way at the mercy of her 'betters'. Many throughout history have been in this position. It's ugly, but that doesn't suggest to me that she thinks her entire society is monstrous.

 

OK. Lavellan being called out on her views. She probably could use that. I don't know if I'd say that she could use it much more than most in this story, or even other stories. But ... who in is in a position to do this, that wouldn't seem like they were punching down? Those few who recognise her personhood - Pride, Haninan, and the spirits - likely still see her as disabled to some degree, or at least in  a great deal of distress. Most of what they know of her - her age and lifespan are only a fraction of theirs, magic isn't normal in her world - doesn't make her threatening enough for them to be offended by her, I think. And they probably assume that someone who's been through the end of the world is more interested in preventing it than in being smugly superior for its own sake, and are taking her criticisms and behaviour in that spirit. Which I do as well. Haninan also doesn't seem highly invested in the social norms of Elvhenan - he questions everything too much for that, which is why he finds it easy to accept that she's a person, allowing communication to continue. Pride does seem bothered by what she says, but he's also made the mistake of dismissing her personhood in the beginning, and is now eager to treat her with more of an open mind, as well as a degree of gentleness, given what he understands of her past, and her current situation of social vulnerability. I find their treatment of her quite understandable, not overly deferential or lenient.

 

One might say that Lavellan seeks out allies specifically beause they reinforce her own views, but I think it's much more basic than that - she gravitates to those who can recognise her as a person, which in this society means those who are willing to look past her emotionless surface. Habitual questioners, like Haninan and Pride. Her allies are still only two elves and a handful of spirits. It seems much more an issue of survival for her rather than any desire to hold court amongst sycophants. Most of Elvhen society is still a danger to her, by virtue of the fact that most cannot recognise her emotions and would be inclined to treat her like a thing.

Yeah, out of morbid curiosity   I watched Torchwood on Netflix after playing DAI the first time...or maybe I started while I was still playing. I generally dislike Dr. Who, but I rather enjoyed Torchwood. It's a little silly but in a good way. The last series (made for Showtime) is horrible however. Series 3 is the best in my opinion.

 

On the topic of Solas' VA, there are a couple Torchwood audio dramas featuring GDL on YouTube right now also.

ah, I have similar problems.

I like the idea of the moral: i.e. you can't change everything, don't overstretch yourself. Even in the LiS world,you don't actually have *that* much control of events even given time travel powers, BUT the LiS world is so **** that I hate the idea that I can't change it. I mean, at the centre you're looking at the trauma an abusive, cruel teacher who kidnaps his students causes, in a corrupt institution which doesn't care too much from which direction the money goes. I don't like the idea that I just have to suck up all the horrible realities of this world as 'inevitable' when I have a real power to change it - a real power Max uses to fix Arcadia Bay. No - screw that, I'm going to get around it somehow whether by time travel or not.

I also feel that in terms of narrative that it's not compelling. You go through this traumatic nightmare arc where Max is reliving things Jefferson told her, but that leads precisely nowhere - suddenly, TORNADO, and all other discussions are put to the side. I'd be happy even if the Tornado was just symbolic of Max's turbulent mental state right then.

I really didn't like that the ending - in a Pricefield game - came down to 'tragic lovers torn apart but fate' or 'be selfish and save the girl'.  They're standard romance tropes but f/f relationship in fiction already have a long history of ending tragically so a damn happy ending would not have gone amiss.

I do better over the phone than I do in person. Trust me, the whole time I had that  guy on the phone like that I had the most ridiculous grin on my face.

 

I've learned to filter a lot of what I think for responses when dealing with people face to face. As a general rule I don't say the exact first thing that comes to my mind unless the possibility of making someone mad doesn't bother me. IRL I'm the quiet person to the side that always sits for about 20seconds before answering anything.

 

Because trust me.......about 97% of what I think needs to be censored. It's not ready to manifest into reality.

No not at all horrible. I am the same way. Though I am better about talking on the phone I still don't answer unless I know who is calling my personal phone.

 

At work I have to answer the phone and make calls. The first three months I was a nervous wreck every time the phone rang. Then when i actually had to start calling clients well I put it off to make all my calls twice a week. Eventually it got easier and I found my voice. I have gotten really good at dealing with snarky clients and sales or spam calls. I usually have the office in stitches over the snark I feed those that deserve it.

 

I had one guy call and ask to speak with the owner, he refused to tell me his name or tell me why he was calling. Would give me some smart ass response. I told him sorry, but my job is pretty specific, my boss is a busy man and phone calls are something he only deals with if it is necessary. So he gives me a final smart ass comment and I said. Look, either I get a name from you or you don't get through. He never did tell me his name and the caller ID for the phone number was blocked. He finally hung up on me

 

I especially loved the call I got from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. He tried to tell me I owed like 6K in back taxes and I had one hour to pay or they would freeze all my assets and the sheriff was coming for me. "Really? You work for the IRS? What is your ID number please, and the CPI Notice information? I need to verify this." He got indignant because I didn't believe him. I work in a damn accounting office. I do taxes for a living. I know how the IRS works and I know for a damn fact that they don't just call someone up and give them one hour to pay or else. If it has gotten to this point you damn well know you owe money and have been intentionally avoiding paying. You've receive multiple letters and have most likely been audited. It's never a surprise.

Yes, I feel exactly the same way.

Historically speaking, lesbian pulp fiction was only allowed to pass the censor by including a tragic ending which made explicit that choosing the girl would lead in ruin and heartbreak, possibly even emphasising the main character's selfish and depraved nature. It's frankly embarrassing that in 2015 we have an ending which accomplishes the same thing when those censorship laws are long dead and buried.

I think it's not much better than queerbaiting, especially with - as you mentioned - the hint of a happy ending we got in San Francisco earlier, and especially because the tornado had very little to do with the disappearances and detective work which made up the bulk of the main plot.

I felt like, ok, I've got over the horrific nightmare sequence where Max internalises all those nasty things Jefferson says, I'm going to conquer that trauma, I'm going to survive... and it could have lead somewhere positive and really reassuring and nice, but instead I have to kill Chloe or Arcadia Bay? It was railroaded in, it was unnecessary, it just made things tragic, and for what end? To make all the queer women playing this game cry? Whilst I have no problem with people picking Warren, I'm angry that he - the straight option - didn't get that same treatment, and that the straight relationship didn't have to end in tragedy. Ugh.

The more I think about it the less I like it.

I pointed out that by this point Max is just unwilling to risk fixing the mistakes she made with time travel with more time travel.  That could lead to Chloe dead and the tornado arriving.
