Personally, I think they're pretty cute with their stubby little legs.
Question: if Solas was actually transported into the real world, what kind of interaction would you have with him? what kind of relationship?(actually, on that note, does anyone know of a fiction like that? you see OC in [fictional world] fanfic all the time, but I don't think I've ever seen anything about a canonical character being transported into the real world.)
The Solas coffee thing is a meme too. Bunch of names on Starbucks cups like Solar, Solace, etc.
On Solas' reaction to 21st century society, if he woke up here (I can't find the original post to quote in my just-woken-up state):
I think he'd possibly appreciate the ingenuity of mortals and the fact that we've achieved a lot of functions the Elvhen had through technology rather than magic. When I first found out about the Vir'Dirthara, I was struck by how similarly it functions to parts of the internet: a compendium of knowledge with a central interface accessible from anywhere, at any time. I imagine that given how the Eluvians link everywhere instantaneously, you could probably have realms which other functions - e.g. you'd possibly have streets of cafés and restuarants, where you could catch a coffee with any friend you have in the world - in the flesh. Whilst we don't have that level of communication or transportation infrastructure yet, it's possibly closer to the level Solas is used to.
I would imagine it'd be very alien though. Culturally, I'm not sure what he'd think - we're a fast-paced people who are constantly focussed on time, moreso with the development of communication & information technology than in comparison to a hundred and fifty years ago. He'd probably find some aspects of our society, such as the prevalence of advertising or the quality of pop music, completely vapid (I would love to prove him wrong on pop music though, oh Solas you old fart). He'd probably find the fact that most of the world lives in poverty appalling (then again, how much better were the Elvhen with slavery?) and find it quite sad that most people seem to be resigned to it, as 'a fact of life'. Definitely a culture shock. It'd be a bizarre scenario where in a lot of ways we're a very distorted mirror image of home to him, superficially similar, culturally alien.
I'd feel quite sorry for him, to be honestI would love to sit down and chat with the guy though, if the opportunity presented itself. He's one of those characters who I really want to take for a coffee and pick their brain.

The best part is it seems like someone actually went to a Starbucks and used the name Solas for coffee ![]()
Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
So, this morning I'm sitting here writing up this scene that came to my brain yesterday. I started off not really knowing if I should have this as an actual chapter to my Zevellan good times or not, but I starting typing anyway.
Next thing I know, I'm really liking the scene I'm writing cause it's all kinds of feels in it and now I'm sitting here at a point where I'm like "ugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh I want them to kiss"
But I'm all messed up about it cause one side of me says "No, not yet, it wouldn't be just a kiss and you know it. It's Zevran"
And the other side is poking me saying "just do it"
And I'm in the middle thinking "Crap, this entire scene thing may not even work within what I'm working on, but I kinda dig what I wrote so far, so I really don't want to toss it out the window"
*slams head on desk*
halp
Just saying, if you or anyone ever wants to toss something into the writers group to ask for feedback, make a discussion thread and post. We can be like a secluded mini-workshop.

I'm typing it up in google doc....how do I share it when I'm done?
Me, I reread this morning and now I'm like...time to fix things in the one I posted. Still relieved to finish something though.

Hit share on the top right, change permissions to however you want to share. If you want to allow someone to edit or make any changes, you'll have to set the permission.
Then you can simply send the link it generates.

Feels rogue saves the day.
I'll need permission to edit however, so that I can make comments. Just share directly with my gmail account, I think you have it.

Alrighty, I fail at technology but be expecting some kind of something soon.

Right, I wasn't making a direct comparison. It's different. But still difficult. I'm kind of mixed, yet.
I wonder how it would've been if Solas was a playable character in a game series, like "The Dreamer" I, II & III. How would people then react to him?
As players, when placed in the position of responsibility, we frequently lie, cheat, manipulate, murder, and do any number of the things that Solas does. We are perfectly happy to avenge betrayal with murder, as Solas did to Felassan. We are capable of sabotaging the genophage cure to get krogan and salarian support, killing the geth, leaving entire species to die, setting the werewolves upon the Dalish, condoning Anders' acts of terrorism, and expressing viewpoints of astonishing racism and ethnocentrism...with relatively little self-examination or moral judgment, for the most part. Count me in on this phenomenon; my maleficar Hawke in DA2 was completely without scruples, and my Warden in DA:O had a pretty significant selfish streak.
But when the position of responsibility belongs to a character other than the PC, we like to judge them. Just look at all the crap that Loghain gets for defending his homeland. We like to think that we would have done better in their shoes, simply because we play the heroes; in fact, we can do far, far worse.
So I think if Solas was a playable protagonist, people would react very differently. Because they *do* react differently in other games when the character they play is the one doing bad things. All of a sudden it goes from "you crazy evil loony" to "you had your reasons."
That's partly why games can be both a real exercise in empathy and also, without consequences to these actions, miss the boat in that regard. Which is why violence in games is often overlooked in terms of its consequences, though not as much in recent years.

I asked once in another thread what people would do if they learned that Solas is doing what he is because of millions of trapped ancient elves suffering or unable to wake because of the Veil, and if he doesn't act they'd die. If he acts, Thedas dies, but the elves live. What would they do in his position? Amazing how quickly people introduced reasons that made it all right for the ancient elves to die in favor of modern Thedas. But they totally didn't see his point of view, he's just a villain and a murderer. etc. etc.
I'm honestly good with people not liking Solas, or not agreeing with his plan. But pretending you're somehow in a better position to make choices like that and it doesn't make you likewise evil or questionable in your morals is ridiculous. I mean, certainly it could just come down to Solas's reason being "because I wanna" and nothing more involved, but not taking a step back and asking yourself these questions is kind of missing the point.
Of course, consequences can also be a deterrent. I'd never not kill Loghain, because I could never do that to Alistair.
A nice theory about the reason Max got her powers
Now, on topic:
Solas Solas Solas Solas

I agree that it's ridiculous if you're trying to be consistent about your morals. Or act in any way like a normal person making RL choices. But a lot of players are not as interested getting "the point." They're interested in being right.
Generally speaking, people want the protagonist to win. They want Harry Potter to be vindicated, Kirk to triumph over Khan, their favorite Game of Thrones character to sit on that ugly metal chair. And it's magnified in video games since you actively drive the protagonist. You want to have the moral high ground. Even if you committed genocide multiple times in Mass Effect. Even your Warden was a complete and utter asshat. I've seen people argue that the morally dubious choices were the "correct" ones, and be upset when they weren't vindicated by the game. Even more people get upset at games like Spec Ops: The Line, which makes it painfully clear that you are NOT the good guy.
IMO, this is a very human response to any story. Is it rational? No. Does it miss the point? Kinda, but it's such a knee-jerk emotional response that I'm not all that surprised by it.
