Alright, that comment about you and other fictional characters was pretty snippy. I apologise for the tone. However, I was definitely questioning something. Not your 'ability' - more of a values/expectations stance. It seems like it would be far too easy to pull apart just about any fictional character out there on the grounds that they don't always behave rationally or exemplify a perfectly balanced and nuanced view of the world. You've made your point that Feynite's writing of Lavellan seems to err more egregiously for you on this front than most other characters. I'll accept that.

 

Mythal's handmaids: one suggests forcing the vallaslin on her, the other tries to reason with her. One treats her less like a person, one more, even though she must appear like an emotionless construct to both.

 

The librarian - when Compassion tells him he's being cruel, it does give him pause. However, he still has no way of knowing that Lavellan is a real person, because he can't read emotions. He's being cruel but not malicious. That's very human.

 

Shira's execution, and Lavellan's negative reaction to it. I believe that's due to the summary nature of the sentence, and the vindictiveness with which it's carried out. No trial - just mind-reading, and then slow public immolation. One doesn't need to dismiss the crime in order to be really offended by how the punishment is carried out.

 

Ess hates the Elvhen? Is this because she was eager to get Pride out of her tavern? She's uncomfortable around nobles, like many would be in a position of relative social disadvantage. I don't know if that means she's presented as hating the whole society - her place in it, maybe. It seems like a reasonable portrait of someone in a society with rigid social classes, who is in some way at the mercy of her 'betters'. Many throughout history have been in this position. It's ugly, but that doesn't suggest to me that she thinks her entire society is monstrous.

 

OK. Lavellan being called out on her views. She probably could use that. I don't know if I'd say that she could use it much more than most in this story, or even other stories. But ... who in is in a position to do this, that wouldn't seem like they were punching down? Those few who recognise her personhood - Pride, Haninan, and the spirits - likely still see her as disabled to some degree, or at least in  a great deal of distress. Most of what they know of her - her age and lifespan are only a fraction of theirs, magic isn't normal in her world - doesn't make her threatening enough for them to be offended by her, I think. And they probably assume that someone who's been through the end of the world is more interested in preventing it than in being smugly superior for its own sake, and are taking her criticisms and behaviour in that spirit. Which I do as well. Haninan also doesn't seem highly invested in the social norms of Elvhenan - he questions everything too much for that, which is why he finds it easy to accept that she's a person, allowing communication to continue. Pride does seem bothered by what she says, but he's also made the mistake of dismissing her personhood in the beginning, and is now eager to treat her with more of an open mind, as well as a degree of gentleness, given what he understands of her past, and her current situation of social vulnerability. I find their treatment of her quite understandable, not overly deferential or lenient.

 

One might say that Lavellan seeks out allies specifically beause they reinforce her own views, but I think it's much more basic than that - she gravitates to those who can recognise her as a person, which in this society means those who are willing to look past her emotionless surface. Habitual questioners, like Haninan and Pride. Her allies are still only two elves and a handful of spirits. It seems much more an issue of survival for her rather than any desire to hold court amongst sycophants. Most of Elvhen society is still a danger to her, by virtue of the fact that most cannot recognise her emotions and would be inclined to treat her like a thing.

It's fine. Stuff like this always get me into an argument over empathy, since a lot of people seem to find "Character A is being a jerk to everyone because they're going through a lot of crap right now" acceptable. While I can accept an emotional stance as explanation, I almost never accept it as justification. If you think I'm a cold insensitive b*tch for that, well, you wouldn't be the first.   

 

On the handmaidens - I'm not sure what further to say here. We both read the scene and both spoke our piece. I mean, neither were opposed to forcing her, one just figured they could try talking first. If you don't agree with me, then you don't agree with me. Arguing it further would just be going in circles. With Ess - and really, the whole tavern sequence, including those random workers who walked in and started muttering about peacekeepers or whatever - seemed to be there to badmouth elven society and validate Lavellan's view of it. As Raeona said (Far better than I did, dear God) It's so much of an Us vs. Them, with elvhen society, especially upper elvhen society, being a "them" so lacking in nuance and moral complexity that, combined with Lavellan's views, the way the sympathetic characters treat her here, and the way she was portrayed in Dread Wolf's Heart, lead me to believe it's all an attempt to paint Lavellan as some sort of - I dunno, righteous savior. Justified in her ideals, unquestionable in her morality. And the story's done nothing to argue against it.

 

She's just... she's expecting and getting all this ground - from Haninan, from Mythal, from Solas in particular - but giving none herself. From what I just recently read (About halfway through chapter eight now, BTW) she's dropping all this wisdom on Pride, clearly being painted as "older" than him despite her comparative age, and approving when he takes her after opinions on the dwarves (Let's see, what was the exact line... "She feels a warmth, a glow of approval that is surprising to her. But to go from ‘dwarves aren’t even people’ to such apparently sincere courtesy is… well, she knew he had it in him, at least.") That right there. It shows this - this undercurrent that Lavellan is correct and moral in what she believes and Solas is only valid if he sides with her. With this and countless others, there's no real argument on the subject - Lavellan is correct, and what defenses Solas offers are paper-thin and painted as "the problem" that Lavellan needs to correct. She's never given this treatment in return. She's never shown as ignorant or prejudiced, despite displaying quite a bit of it, despite being thrown into a society where she should be hopelessly out of her depth. It's all take and no give - which is such a recurrent problem in fix-it fic. The protagonist is good and right and knows what must be done, and anyone who disagrees is either an evil jerkbag or will slowly be convinced to come around to the MC's thinking. It's all so... Us vs. Them.

 

(And to be clear - it's not that I don't think the dwarves are people or that Solas is right in his prejudice against them. Rather, it's an example of the problem that's plaguing the fic and the Inquisitor in particular, that the supporting cast either echoes her opinions or are completely wrong and must be made to see her thinking. Feynite could've easily kept this particular instance of Lavellan schooling Solas if there were simply another instance where he does the same in return. Or another character does the same in return. Anything, really. I just want to see someone knock Lavellan off her high horse, as she and Feynite are so willing to do the same to others.)

 

As for the lack of characters to do so - the story is as it is because that's how Feynite wrote it. She could easily include another character who's willing, or just give Solas the backbone necessary to do it (Canon Solas certainly would, but I'll concede that this is the past and he may not have developed his... ideological nature just yet.) Granted, that's getting back into my "Going through some bad stuff doesn't justify being a jerk to others" thing, which again, goes back to my "I've been known to be a cold insensitive b*tch" thing.

On the subject of player-centered morality and over-the-top post-Trespasser reactions - did anyone think that the response to Teagan was sort of... extreme? Someone in another forum pointed out that he's basically wary of the Inquisition because it's a lot like what happened with Loghain ("Don't worry that all your leaders mysteriously died in a tragedy I single-handedly survived,  I'm here to save you! Also that throne's lookin' mighty fine I'm stealing it bye.") and yeah, the Inquisition has a huge potential to turn to tyranny and really mess stuff up. All things considered, I'd be really wary too, and want to take the threat out of the picture as quickly as possible.

 

But the way some people reacted to him, you'd think Teagan's sole role was to kick your mabari and murder your children. 

 

 

I have no idea. I haven't played it......but I believe based on what I hear/read it is packed with serious feelz.

It's a really odd duck.   I remember I played episode one when it first came out and I was like "What even is this hipster trash what's it supposed to be" and then I played episode two and it's like "Oh, THAT'S what it's supposed to be. Soul crushing."

Yes.

 

Despite my issues with the final episode it's completely worth playing.  The entire thing can be done in about 10 hours, too (each chapter takes about 1-2 hours to play).

Or maybe the attractiveness of returning DAO characters is proportional to how bad they got hit by the ugly stick in DA2.  Teagan looked the best of all the cameos so he became the worst looking.

 

Maybe this is the real reason for Zev not being in DAI: Frostbite simply could not handle how hot he'd got.

To all those reeling from LiS, may I humbly suggest countering it by playing some Undertale? It's only ten dollars on Steam, and only a heart-wrecking torture session if you make it one!

 

(Although it's got a lot of modern absurdist interent humor - especially if you're nice and merciful to everyone - so it might not be everyone's thing. But the characters are really nice!)

I've never been that big a fan of Zev but writing him in the dom!Alistair thing suddenly really made me aware of just how fun he is.  And now I want to write so much more of him.

Vivienne had added truffle oil to the house's shared grocery list.  Solas considered it for a moment before unchecking the box.  It was their own little private game, her making extravagant demands and him ignoring most of them.  Dorian never noticed; in fact, Solas couldn't think of a single instance where Dorian had ever stepped into a grocery store.  He'd still yet to live down putting a metal fork in Vivienne's brand-new microwave.  

 

Solas looked down at his study guide key; it was harder than Professor Ameridan's actual exam, but no one would remember that if they did well.  No one except Sera, who would bitch about learning something for a change.  He sighed and rubbed his temples; at least he didn't have to teach her section until Thursday.

 

The cramped little classroom where he led discussion section filled up earlier than usual today.  Notebooks that had gone unused all semester suddenly appeared from nowhere, and he could tell from the cadence of the taps and clicks that laptops were actually taking notes.  

 

All, of course, except Cole.  Who slunk in right at the end.  He walked up to Solas, who continued to write exam information on the whiteboard.

 

"For you," said Cole.  He set something down on Solas's study guide key.

 

"Thank you," said Solas absently.  "I suggest you take a seat, Cole."  

 

"She kept looking for you this morning."

 

The words didn't register until a few seconds later.  He finished writing exam information, double-checked the times, and turned around to pick up the study guide key.

 

Cole still hadn't turned in his overdue paper, but Solas didn't care.  He smelled the coffee before he registered the Little Haven symbol on the paper sleeve.  He looked up to see Cole beaming at him from the very back of the room.

 

Picking up the cup, he felt cardboard, not the brush of her fingers against his.  But taking a sip brought more than just the warmth of the coffee.  Solas fought the ridiculous grin that threatened to spread across his face.

 

"If you'll all take a look at the board," he called across the room, and the chatter of his undergrads died down.  "Your exam times are here, and posted online.  If you are sick or need to make up an exam for any other reason, please email me or Professor Ameridan before next Friday.  Professor Ameridan will also be hosting an extra study session on Sunday evening at seven."

 

"Solas?  I think I've lost my study guide.  I swear I had it this morning, I just--"

 

"I brought extras," said Solas without missing a beat.  He picked one up and handed it to Merrill.

 

"Thank you."  Her huge green eyes got even wider as she scanned the sheet.  "Are you really going to test us on all the pre-Veil material too?"

 

"Yes," said Solas firmly over the murmurs of discontent from the rest of the undergrads.  "History is cumulative, and so are your exams."

 

He took another sip of the coffee; usually, it was a fleeting luxury, something to keep him warm on the walk to campus.  But this afternoon, he took his time.  Let himself savor the bitter and the sweet, the memory of the mystery girl's smile this morning.

 

A beep from his laptop snapped him back to the present.  Vivienne again, now adding dessert wine to the list.  He closed the lid; that one was worth consideration.

 

"We will start with basic principles of pre-Veil civilizations," he began, but history was the last thing on his mind for a change.  When did the girl who so loved mystery next work, and did she like dessert wine?

 

(Oh, and the bit about the fork in the microwave?  That's a real thing. My Disney Princess roommate did that freshman year )
