Something fun that I call upon the Fort for help with.

 

I have decided I need to change my Lavellan's name. People are starting to call me Mayriya and that's feeling weird.

 

Mostly in the sense of stuff I'm writing about my Lavellan.

 

Anywho, screw her, I like this name, but the degree of seperation needs to happen. But I'm having trouble thinking up a name.

 

So, I am open to ideas from the Fort.

 

It was supposed to just be a placeholder for the beta phase, after which characters would be deleted before release, but a decade ago, I gave one of my earliest MMO characters my name. And when it came time to actually change it, I found the new name I chose too weird, so I switched back to my name. Big world full of infinitely basass characters with all sorts of thematically chosen, creative, lore literate names, and I'm running around as Christina. It's a kind of funny moment and I've never named a character anything close to my name again.

 

I usually take a lot of time deciding and take meanings and lore and all sorts of considerations in mind before I name someone. So think about her personality and elfy lore and comb some word meanings. I wouldn't really rely on Project Elvhen because it's just guesswork but it can serve as a guide.

 

Telling this story reminds me that she was actually my first PC I wrote fic for! I had completely forgotten.  I don't remember it being remotely good, though it was feelsy. She had an anxiety response to/fear of snow thanks to past trauma.

They really did. They do appreciate us noticing all the details too and have said as much in various places. I went and did a fangirl gush over animation capturing feels at one of them at PAX in the spring.

Some of us who have actually been in relationships like that and experienced how toxic and unhealthy it is firsthand don't throw the abuse label at it lightly. Sure, from your perspective it's "hot" and "sexy" when one person is constantly angry and frustration so you can fantasize about steamy hate sex, but those of us who actually lived it or had loved ones who lived it have seen that that constant anger, frustration, and misery comes from feeling antagonized and invalidated by the person who should have our back the most. Feeling that alone and antagonized all the time is not cute or sexy, its very distressing, and emotionally damaging in the long run. Add that to how "rivalmance" is obtained by Hawke constantly insulting/belittling their loved one and/or invalidating their core beliefs, and it is the core definition of emotional abuse. Take it from someone who actually lived it.

I know we decided to end this topic as it can easily offend and get sensitive, since people come from all walks of life and have different perceptions (Fenris ), but...

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry this happened to you -- I truly am. Myself, I was in an emotionally abusive relationship. It was a confusing and hurtful time, but in the end I grew from it and learned to stand up for myself. But I know not everyone manages this. So yeah, sorry you went through that, and I can totally respect your discomfort. Hope you and yours have moved on to better things now.

I get slightly confused for a split second every time there's another Nehn pop up but it's a nice word to take a name from.

 

I think it was Moirin who had headcanoned a son named Nehn too.

What do you think would be first born type of names among elves?

 

Cause she is the eldest. So maybe I could start with something like that.

 I had written this whole dramatic rivalicious moment between them mentioning the lengend of the slow arrow, and I treasured it so much at the time. Now I can never look at it with a straight face again.

 

“If I remember correctly,” responded Solas in a hollow voice, “the arrow comes more slowly than that. But eventually, it does.”

I'm lazy.  I just crib names from other settings that sound close enough that they don't violate my immersion.  Tolkien's a good one for that.

Solas and Dorian moved camp to the armchairs by the fire after the barista lit it for all her frozen patrons.  The rain showed no sign of letting up, and lightning occasionally flashed across the windows.  Briefly, he thought of Vivienne, entertaining some fancy speaker from Jader in this downpour.  Hopefully they weren't outside.  Or maybe they were; it might teach her some humility.

 

Solas had Dorian's second draft in one hand, and a red pen in the other.  "You need to ease off the tea," he said.  "First Enchanter Josephus was known for his mastery of ice wards, not mice."

 

A small smile cracked Dorian's strained expression.  "I should leave that one in.  Give Professor Ameridan a good laugh."

 

"I would have penalized you for it."

 

"You have a stick up your ass."

 

Solas was about to retort when the mystery barista came back around to the fire with a tray laden with drinks.  "Earl Grey tea for Mr. Roderick--" the grumpy-looking man by the window didn't even look up at her "--pumpkin spice latte with extra nutmeg for Amund--"

 

"Ta, little elf!"

 

"Chai tea for Dorian, decaf coffee for Solas."  She smiled at the two of them as she handed over their drinks.  "You two are very predictable."

 

"Graduate students are creatures of habit," said Dorian brightly.  "Horrible, grueling habit."

 

She chuckled and glanced at Solas, who felt his throat tighten as he smiled back.  He could still feel her fingers brushing the raindrops from his cheek.  Dorian's grin didn't help with the nerves that were finally starting to sneak up on him.  What had he been thinking?  Was he really about to share a bottle of fancy wine with a girl whose name he didn't even know?

 

"You're...almost endearing," said Dorian around his stack of books.  "A bit pathetic, but I think I prefer lovestruck to stick-up-the-ass."

 

Solas did his best to ignore his housemate.  The clock over the fireplace read 5:45--fifteen minutes until she was off the clock, though if the rain kept up, it might not even matter.  He didn't own a car, and running back to the house in this icy deluge was not appealing.  

 

He forced his brain back to the task at hand--picking apart Dorian's draft.  It wasn't bad, though he wasn't about to tell Dorian that to his face.  The more Chantry-sympathetic members of the committee would go to town on all the Tevene sources, but Dorian was in the right for once.  If they weren't going to listen to all the facts, they didn't deserve to call themselves academics.  He scribbled in a few suggestions, fixed Dorian's spelling, and handed the draft back to him.

 

Dorian frowned at all the red marks.  "I will never get used to southern spelling."

 

"Or the food, or the weather."  They shared a wry grin.  Solas couldn't help but glance at the clock again: 6:05, and if anything, it was getting even darker and windier outside.  

 

"Are you ready to go?"

 

The barista was back, bundled up in a long black raincoat with an umbrella clutched in one hand.  The top of the bottle of port stuck out of the bag under her arm.  Solas hastily drained his half-finished cup of coffee; she saw, but had the good grace not to comment.

 

Dorian, however, was rarely so generous.  "Leaving me to fend for myself?"

 

"When I first arrived, you accused me of taking up precious book space.  You'll manage."  He glanced at the barista, who was doing her best to hide a smile.  He followed her to the back door of the coffee shop, where she suddenly stopped with her hand on the doorknob.

 

"Your place or mine?" she asked.

 

"I--sorry?"

 

"Um...which one of us lives closer?  So we don't get soaked?"

 

Solas felt himself starting to blush.  "I live three blocks from here, and neither of my housemates are in."  

 

"Oh?  Is that a selling point?" she teased.  

 

He could have hit himself.  He was a grown adult, and a few words from some random girl had him speechless.  But she wasn't a random girl; that was half the trouble.  When the silence stretched out long enough to be uncomfortable, she opened the door and gestured for him to step under the umbrella with her.

 

If this were one of Varric's terrible romance novels, he'd have a seductive line ready to go.  He'd wrap his arm around her waist, maybe whisper sweet nothings into her ear as warm summer rain fell all around them.  She'd lean her head against his shoulder and sigh something like, "Oh, Solas!  Your eyes are like the sky before dawn!"

 

Varric, he decided, could go fuck himself.  

 

But he did accept the shared shelter of the umbrella as they walked out into the driving rain.  It was either that, or spend their second date (did this even count as a date?) looking like a drowned cat.
