So I posted something in Scuttlebutt and on Blackwall thread and was wondering if this even made sense? It was because people were saying "it won't be equal unless..." and the like. Wanted opinions. Hope you don't mind.
(This also doesn't include random gating since it was focused more on sexual orientation)

Spoiler

Actually, I'm pretty sure what the devs had said was everyone would get at least two choices, but not to expect fairness in numbers.

I feel it is a small victory for the 'nerd' to be romance-able. But I'm not sure how I'm feeling about the female-elf only at this point. May need to come back and comment on it later when I read through the rest of the pages and sort through my thoughts.

All I know is I'm gonna name my dalish female Glinncoco so that whenever she make her move I'll yell at the screen. "Glinncoco! You go Glinncoco!"

It's a little hard to be too excited right now knowing that a lot of people were disappointed with the news.  I hope the story reason really is a story reason because I am immensely curious about what is so different for a female elf (and really what's different for every race/gender/class combination) now.  I've been sick the last few days and didn't have it in me to stick it out through all the trolling.  I don't blame David Gaider at all for just not dealing with it.  I hope none of it is too vitriolic.

I'm with you. I expected a dance party, but... no. I mean, I'm still happy that my Lavellan can be what I envisioned her as... but I just can't celebrate when there are so many people that are so bummed out.  :(

All things considered, this thread was probably still the nicest there's ever been during a romance reveal, hah. Most people, upset or not, were still articulate and polite/considerate about it, but of course there others that... were not. And I just hate to see anyone upset in the first place, so when others roll in and make it worse... augh.

Agreed about the story reasons, though. I'm imagining it has to be something really elf-specific. Eluvians? Arlathan? Ancient elves? Creators? I don't know, but considering I've always loved the elven lore most, I'm most excited at the prospect of it being reallyreally important... I just hope it's interesting enough that the people who were locked out because of it feel maybe a little better about it, you know? No way to have any clue, but yeah... Here's hoping.  <3

edit @ Carpool: OMGOSH HOW ADORABLE. Love the reactions. "Much news," hah. Yeah, I'd say so.

Wish I could like this but I haven't had likes since ...er... before the tweet happened. Gonna have a lot of back tracking to do once things settle down...

For the record, I'm avidly childfree by choice (sterilized and all) and I think a "have a child" story arc is cool sounding. IRL no thanks, but I do enjoy good stories with interesting endings.
Who knows.
Solas may be asking the fem elf to perform a dark ritual and produce another OGB. Oh...the intrigue!

Running down the mental list of things I'd do as DAI's GM, it could be that the ancient elves were immortal, but not in the way you'd expect. The higher echelons of elven society knew how to transfer consciousness in a manner similar to how Flemeth has managed to extend her lifespan by possessing her daughters.

While exploring the ruins of Arthalan the party makes a startling discovery, the gods of the Dalish pantheon once walked the surface of Thedas in corporeal bodies. Like the Old Gods, their consciousness is trapped in the Fade while the priests that gave up their bodies to be their vessels remain inside the various temples throughout the city. If Solas can find an intact temple he might be able to view the memories of the vessel, potentially giving the Inquisiton invaluable information about the Elder One.

The party finds a temple but hits an unexpected jackpot, one of the elven gods is still within it's corporeal vessel. But despite being in Uthenera it's way to decrepit to last much longer. Solas could use his ability to go into the Fade in an attempt to retrieve what knowledge he can and attempts to...only to have the ancient deity temporarily posess him. The Mark of the Rift within the Inquisitor's hand glows brilliantly and suddenly Solas is returned to his body.

In the few moments he was in the Fade Solas saw more than just a few glimpses of the past, he saw the memories of of an eon-old being and finds himself wanting more. This of course, is a problem. If Solas leaves his body for an extended period of time there's no telling if he could ever come back or if the being that would inhabit his body would be friendly. Solas doesn't really mind if he was lost in the Fade for the rest of his days, he'd be able to find out more about the world than he'd ever be able to if he slept in a million ruins. The Inquisitor could put a permanent end to this conundrum, but Solas might not approve.

Of course there is another option. Depending on the Inquisitor's race and other choices the Elven God might be convinced to return Solas...if another suitable vessel can be found. The Inquisitor, even a Dalish one won't suffice due to the changes the Mark of the Rift has wrought on their soul. If the Inquisitor is in a relationship with Solas then an OGB scenario pops up.

Now, from a narrative standpoint this probably wouldn't happen. David Gaider came up with the Dark Ritual concept way before DAO's main story was fully fleshed out. Repeating it to me would kind of diminish the impact of the original, which is a major component of Morrigan's character development. If suddenly it becomes a part of another character's story it kind of cheapens the concept because suddenly it isn't unique anymore.

Solas is our great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather just to make things extra squicky. :P

Who only wants us for the elf babies we will make for him...
Right before he betrays us... Because he's working for the Big Bad (his one true love).
MEEP.

For the disappointed Inquisitor in this scenario:

Spoiler

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. But I'm sure, as Gareth David-Lloyd put it, we won't be disappointed.

Well... as far as the character and story goes, anyway.

I think part of that is our lovely Solas thread is full of awkward unicorns, who don't want to trot over someone's toes accidentally.  So we basically stayed in the thread and just let other people ask the hard questions.

^This. I like it in here.  Outside the thread it's all

But inside it's (usually) just

Glad things are calming down now. And I really wish people would stop going after the devs every time we get a reveal. Devs are people. This close to release, they are really, really tired people. By this point, I think hearing yet another performance of the "you suck" choir would send me into the closet with Cheetos and booze for an extended period of time. Not...that I use that as a coping strategy or anything...um...*cough*

And done.

I'm going home.

Be excellent to each other! :)

I always seem to end up with tragic (at least from the viewpoint of my PC) first playthroughs. Will gamble with my Dalish rogue on Solas anyway. He fits her fascination with Elvhen history so well.

And the second chapter of her introductory fanfic (with a bit of Solas) is coming along nicely. Will drop it here when it is finished.

Congrats to everyone planning a female elf on getting some Solas! My interest in the character has died out recently I'm not sure why.

interestingly enough me tooXD I hope the mood for the sake of the solassians can return to full bloom, especially because he's still romance-able despite his restrictions. Likewise I'm sorry people that wanted to romance him with a male period or a female non-elf character, but hopefully some of the love for him will return despite this falter in the mood.

I cannot like this but I want to.  The last thing the devs need is people being awful when they're all so overworked as it is.

And now my sleeping aid is kicking in, so maybe I will be able to stay asleep.  In keeping with the theme of the night, I leave you with Bill and Ted.

Rogue. Maia Lavellan, a skilled, sarcastic, dagger-wielding hunter who chafes at the isolation of her clan and jumps at the chance to go spy on the summit, hoping to see a bit of the wider world. She'll have some Dalish swagger, but a bit of innocence too.

I hope none of the regulars of this thread are harassing the devs. I hope we are above that. They need to just come out and say the last LI and race gate. The Devs said before every sexuality would have a choice & not every race would be equal. No matter what, some are going to be disappointed. I wish it wasn't so. I'll probably pair Solas with a mage. I'm a mage heavy player.

Well, this is disappointing. :( i guess I'll be spending less time in this thread now. I just cannot roll a female/play a straight romance.

It was nice while it lasted, Solas thread.

I get where you're coming from.  I usually play straight and female, because it's harder for me to identify with anything else--I will make male characters from time to time, but it's just not the same.  Representation is important, even if you're not playing the character as yourself.  (Which is why the Could We Please See More of the Lady Inquisitor thread came about...)  I'm sorry you don't get to have Solas.  Maybe you'll get Blackwall; unfortunately that will mean I have to be sad for the lesbians (maybe still will if Vivienne is available and straight) and there are quite a few awesome bi/lesbian ladies on the forums too.

I'd tell you not to leave the thread, but, well, I can also see how everyone else's good cheer may grate.

It's not terribly interesting when you're gay. It'd be one thing if there was a situation or two in history where it was unequal in our favor, but that doesn't exist, and likely won't. It's interesting when just about every gay that allows you to play your gender of choice also caters to your sexuality: it's not that I want every option to be bisexual, I'm just unhappy about what I assume will be inequality in choices. I'm also a little bit less flexible than most people: I get enough heterosexuality in almost every other form of media I enjoy that I tend to actively avoid it in RPGs, so I won't probably ever end up romancing Solas.

Maybe Viv will be another lesbian, or Blackwall will be gay and I'll bite my tongue and pretend I never posted this, but I was pretty interested in romancing Solas so I'm feeling like a victim today. And I'll probably be whiny if I post on the forums for the next little bit.

I really doubt that the final LI will be straight, but I may eat my words, since I was absolutely sure Solas would be bisexual.  But no matter whether it's Viv or Blackwall, no matter what their sexuality, someone's losing out.

My guess is Blackwall will be the last one and he will be bisexual and ungated.  But because I've said that, it'll be Vivienne and she'll be straight and human-only.  I hope not... I hope the last one is bisexual and ungated, whichever one it is.

I don't really know how to feel about this.  What other story reason could there be for "female only" if it doesn't involve babies in some form?  Fine if the guy is straight, but specifying it's a story-significant reason is....hm.

I'm still quite happy in the end; I get my Iron Bull, my Dorian, and now Solas (oh yea, and Cullen? I keep forgetting about the poor boy!).  I just never anticipated race-gating being that specific.

The only explanation needed for female only is "he's straight."  Even if he never wanted kids, just being straight is enough to justify only being into women.  What is more likely to have a story reason is his interest in elves.  Prior to the addition of racial selection, he was probably not even going to be a romance option at all.  As others speculated, I am guessing he was added into the mix because Iron Bull and some other male romance would have been gated against elves, and Solas evened that out.  If I'm right, that suggests that Cullen is also race-gated, maybe even heavily race-gated.  It would also up Blackwall's chances of being an LI available to all, since the gating of Iron Bull would originally have cut down on options for certain male characters (mostly elves, I'm guessing), and women may otherwise have only a man who's just into humans and a man who's just into elves--and Iron Bull, who was likely initially gated against PROBABLY elves and POSSIBLY dwarves.  But this is just conjecture.

Storywise, for elven gating, though, it could have to do with the eluvians, or the Fade, or ancient elven culture, or Solas's need for elven/human/etc. companionship and the only society that wouldn't persecute him would be the Dalish, even if he fundamentally disagreed with some of their beliefs.

But bear in mind we were also told early on that not every race/gender combination would get the same number of romantic options.  Everyone's supposed to have two choices.  Maybe elven women get an extra option.  That's not such a huge deal overall since few people will play elven women.  Maybe no one expected Solas to be so popular?

......ouch, now I just thought of a poor elf girl pregnant with an elf blooded qunari. D:

... Now I will never be able to romance Iron Bull with any non-qunari female, because ow.

i never kinda understood that about the fantasy genre. its fantasty so why not make kids with magic? like that game (the game is kinda **** but my point remains valid) conception 2

Well, you can evidently use magic to aid in conception (Dark Ritual!!!!!), but unless there's magic to change someone's physical sex better than surgery can in the real world, I don't think you're going to get a man pregnant (unless he's a transman).  And even if magic were involved between a male/female pairing that doesn't mean they can magic a human into an elf.  Elf-ness is lost when an elf has a child with a non-elf.  This is canon, apparently elven-ness is somehow not genetic because it can never, ever be regained even if the descendants of an elf and non-elf pairing have children with elves over the generations for centuries.  So it's likely that magic is somehow involved in making elves, well, elves, in the first place--magic that can't be replicated to make a non-elf into an elf (or if it can, due to the prosecution of elves, no one would try?).

Probably Dalish rogue.

My original plan for this particular Inquisitor was a male mage romancing Solas, I'm switching genders now but not sure I'm keeping the class too. Just because the idea of Solas dating someone who doesn't have free all-time access to the Fade like him, doesn't really understand his relationship with the Fade, is suddenly so cute to me. Dating another mage would make things easier between them, but I kind of like putting this little extra difficulty in their relationship. Sort of meeting in the middle - he doesn't understand much of her constant combat and hunt skill honing, she doesn't understand much of his Fade explorations, but they make it work. It sounds like an adorable relationship, and I'm learning towards this now.

I just got on 40 minutes ago, spend them all catching up.
Saw Gaider's tweet first and I thought Solas has been denied as an LI, and I was like "Noooooooo". X3

Went further down and saw the actual news, been making high pitched sounds of joy ever since!

I'm curious as to what the "story reasons" for this restriction are. Given that Solas doesn't like being defined as "just an elf", I find him an odd choice for the limitation.

Wow okay, the race and gender gating makes this spot of news less exciting. Still cool news!
