It's this evening's task to read through all of your lovely fiction and comment on each. Sure beats putting away all the washing on the drying rack, hehe. Looking forward to it

 

For those that are interested, I wrote a pricefield oneshot (I won't link it, but it's short, and it's on my AO3). There's a queer poetry slam night on campus next week and I'm thinking of adapting it into a slam poem which talks about the treatment of lesbians/queer women in fiction too. Has anyone ever written a slam poem before? I have literally never done it but I signed up for it last week just because 'lol, why not?' and I'm now shitting myself about it damn.

 

Reading that was just....several different feelings that sometimes changed in the space of a line or two.

 

I've never done slam poetry, just traditional readings, though I know someone who used to do slams. She's queer too and would probably also have a lot to say on this now that I'm reminded, though she has put her poetry stuff on hold for a time because of school and work and now, a baby coming.

 

That said, I think you really should do something. You have some time to figure it out. Learn the rhythm you want to use, speak to a timer and learn to time yourself right.

This is true.

 

And you're good at some of these observations that really can help give a rounded view of things.

I am frustrated with how stuck this regency style AU idea is in my head.  Like, gloves covering hands (seeing she's an archer, wanting to feel them), Nehn's braid she fixates on, tension, glances, but trying to think of how to write even a small scene like this and keep it in character.  

 

Though, I got back on track for a moment and started talking to myself a couple of hours ago in terms of coming up with dialogue between Nirwen and Nehn for a post-Trespasser chapter. Then I came and typed it out.

I'm trying to weave in ends of black fingering weight yarn.

 

For those who don't know....fingering weight is like.....a small step above lace.

 

I just might have a stroke doing this.

I now deeply regret keeping Celine alive in my canon playthrough. Is there a 'screw you all' option for the potential rulers of Orlais? I don't like the assembled choices, lets have someone better. Someone less insufferably selfish, or at least more fun.

Lavellan waited downstairs while Solas went to change his sodden clothes; despite her best efforts with the umbrella, the ferocious wind left them both splattered with rain.  She carefully laid her dripping coat and umbrella in the corner of his kitchen, then wandered into the living room to admire the bookshelves.

 

Three of them stood side by side, crammed full to bursting.  She snickered a little when she spied a copy of Swords and Shields among a bunch of books with titles like Dress for Success and Playing the Game: How to Get Ahead.  So the bitchy housemate who hated their brew had a soul after all.  Or at least, a good sense of humor about bad romance novels.  Now that she thought about it, Solas's housemate bore an uncanny resemblance to the latest book's villainess.

 

Someone also loved Varric Tethras's crime serials.  The whole set of Hard in Hightown had pride of place on the middle shelf, and the spines were well-worn.

 

"You can borrow the first one if you like," said Solas.  She turned around to see him coming down the stairs, barefoot and dry.  "His tricksters are much better than his lovers."

 

She was learning to recognize the gleam of mischief in his eyes.  "Were you the inspiration for any of his characters?"

 

Solas chuckled.  "I am neither a hard-bitten cop nor a lovestruck recruit.  So no."  He gestured for her to sit on the battered leather couch while he dug around in the kitchen cabinets.

 

"I hope you don't mind regular glasses.  Vivienne refuses to let anyone else touch the fancy ones."

 

"How did you wind up living together?" asked Lavellan.  "You don't have seem to have much in common."

 

"Dorian and I are in the same year of the history program."  She heard a drawer slam, then a soft curse before he came back to the living room with two glasses and a corkscrew.  "These townhouses are university subsidized, but still not cheap, so I took him up on the offer to split rent.  Men like Dorian can't stand to live by themselves."

 

"And..." She fished around for the other housemate's name. "What about Vivienne?"

 

"Dorian's friend.  I can't claim to like her, but at least she doesn't leave used tea mugs all over the place."  Solas wrinkled his nose and shoved one such mug to the very edge of the coffee table.  

 

She couldn't stop staring at his hands.  Slowly uncorking the bottle, pouring her the first glass, his slender fingers stark against the dark wine.  Little red flecks of pen ink dotted his fingertips, and caught the light whenever he shifted.  

 

Solas handed her the first glass with both hands, so they couldn't help but touch.  When he started to pull away, she held on, trapping his fingers between hers and the glass.

 

"Careful," she whispered when the wine threatened to spill over the edge.  "Did you ever get that fake blood out of your shirt?"

 

"If I say no, will you do it for me?"

 

She laughed and let him disentangle his fingers from hers.  "You're so insufferable!" 

 

"Vivienne has said worse, I assure you."  Solas finished pouring his own glass and lightly tapped the rim against hers.  "To...wine and company?"

 

"Lame."  Lavellan thought about it for a moment.  Something that would impress him, or get under his skin.  Or maybe both; it had been a long, long time since she met someone who liked to push boundaries as much as she did.  She cast about the room for any inspiration, and landed on his set of Hard in Hightown novels.

 

"To a fellow trickster," she finally said.

 

Solas raised his eyebrows, but accepted the toast nonetheless.  The first sip of port burst across her tongue, sweet and heavy with a hint of maple syrup.  

 

"And how do you know that?" he asked.  

 

"Oh, it's just a feeling."  If he was anything like other graduate students, an answer like that would drive him nuts.

 

His brow furrowed, and his second sip of wine came faster than the first.  "Surely there is more to it than that."

 

"You tell me.  How did you know I like port?"

 

He was, she realized, extremely cute when he blushed.  Or maybe it was the dusting of light freckles across his cheeks and nose.  But almost as soon as it came, the flush vanished, and a knowing half-smile replaced it.

 

"It was a lucky guess.  Or I suppose, a feeling."

I have no more likes, but yay more gradAU fluff.
