I'd actually love it if he was race gated because he was a villain trying to cause an elf uprising. Then we could rule as elf king and queen of Thedas. DOWN WITH THE SHEMLEN!

Me too T_T I wont be able to have children in real life even though I desperately wish I could so video games offer some wish fulfillment in that regard for me.

That's an aspect that I hadn't really thought of because I take my family situation for granted, thank you for sharing your perspective.  I know other people have said they like the idea of elven kids, but this in particular stood out to me.

Oh my! THAT'S THE NEWS I WAS WAITING FOR! 

I was still uncertain between choosing human mage or elf mage, but now the path is clear!
I'll have to do at least four playthrough to romance all the things , but I'm happy Solas is one of them and I COMPLETELY trust Bioware guys when they say that "it makes SUPER sense story". That intrigues me even more.

I'm ready !

I don't know about, sure i was disappointed that i couldn't romance dagna or the scout as a male dwarf, but it didn't really blow it for me...

The only game who theorically didn't 'blow things' in this department a could be DA2. This situation is better then DAO and the ME IP (expecially the first two).

I'm talking about the two pictures of males under the "confirmed for males" heading.

I'm lucky I was planning to play a female Dalish anyway. Solas is the only one I really wanted, but I'll eventually give Cullen a shot.

The one with the mustache is male, the one with the scar is female.

The one that kind of looks like Sherlock/Benedict Cumberbatch with shorter hair is a woman. On that note, either I'm not getting the hype for Cassandra or I've been treated to nothing but unflattering pictures of her.

With regards to Solas, this news actually makes me more interested in him. Was planning on a purist-dalish for my canon play through, which meant that previously the only LI that was even remotely interesting was Sera [until I found out she was fem only]. Now I can have a purist-dalish with a purist-elf LI

Wow good thing I decided to pop in today! needless to say this information was....unexpected. On the one hand I'm really happy that he's even romance-able but on the other hand I'm a little saddened for his male fans out there. I was really hoping he was bi above all else because I hate seeing anyone left out. I also never really play female elves; I tend to mostly play humans, Dwarves and male elves and I wanted to try out a Qunari this time. I'll definitely break down and play a female elf for this guy though, it just probably won't be my first play-through (maybe second or third, with my first human female being forever alone in unrequited love *sniff*). I also hope he has a good reason for being restricted to elves because I certainly don't want him to be racist, that scares me a little. Anyway this thread is awesome, the fans are awesome and so is Bioware for all their hard work. Ahh Bittersweet day this is.

My apologies for being so late. I've finally worked up the courage to reemerge from lurking and share my thoughts. And, I need to get them off my chest, I have sleep to attend to. It also took me several hours to write. I have a hard time writing my thoughts down.

 

Soooooo, Whoo for the Solas romance. I'm not upset he's straight, lots of people are straight. I feel for those who are upset. No, I'm upset and disappointed that he's racegated for only elves. It just made my female elf mage feel insignificant and worthless. Everyone that wants to romance Solas has to play a female elf with the only  big diverse factor being rogue, warrior, or mage. And, that just ruined it for me. It lacks the diversity I was naively looking forward too. I was looking forward to hearing people romance him as another race and having interracial romances with him because it gave me with my fem elf mage a unique feeling. Since, not everyone was going romance him with a fem elf, it made me feel different. Now, everyone is forced to play a fem elf for his romance and now I don't want it; even though that's exactly what I was going to do. I hate blending in, being the same as everybody else. I love being different and standing out. And, that's what I felt before this and now I don't. It makes me sad. I was so excited to play a female elf mage for my first playthrough, especially after finding out they'd be Dalish. Now, I want nothing to do with her. I know that sounds over dramatic, this whole post sounds over dramatic, but I had it in my head that she was straight and only into elves. So I don't want to just change her to fit another romance. Plus I'm personally not interested in any of the other males that would romance females. 

 

I wanted his romanceability to be diverse and opened to more than one race but it's not. Oh well. It hasn't totally affected my hype train, maybe shook it slightly. No, no, I'm wrong, my hype train was derailed it's in need of more Cole to get back on track. 

 

I'm sorry for the length. I'm sorry it may not make any sense, I'm still confused about how to feel about this. Who knows? I may end playing my fem elf mage first and she may romance Solas. I don't know, anymore.

 

I really do need more Cole. *grabs Asunder* third time really is a charm.

It's not really just that Solas isn't a romance specifically that's upsetting, although I was really looking forward to him possibly being available. If Cullen had been bisexual, it would have made a world of difference, for example. The romance feature matters a lot to me, which I know other people frown on, but I don't particularly care and I don't see an objective reason why other features of the game have to be the dealbreaker over this. For me, it just comes down to whether I can get invested knowing it's just going to be Dorian for me. It's a huge let down from thinking I would probably really enjoy romances for at least two playthroughs. Now I'm thinking I'll probably only play once and I have to choose between two concepts that I was pretty happy with for the PC. It's just a big let down and I'm struggling to find interest enough to get back into Inquisition at all. It's not that I doubt I'll like Solas, because I'm sure I would, it's just the disappointment that there's probably no romance option to fill in the void that he left. 

 

But I really appreciate your support for equal numbers going forward, so thank you for that.

 

I'm really sorry you're so disappointed with the LI reveals and numbers.  I hope that when the game comes out you find that Dorian (or even Bull) are everything you hoped for in a romance!

Does anyone ever wonder if the reaction to Solas being heterosexual was so negative because we have been conditioned to expect elves to be either bisexual or gay?

 

So far every elf we've had (prior to Solas) wasn't heterosexual. In a way, he deviates from the typical "elf romance" trope. You know? Sorry to point this out, it just kinda dawned on me. I know people are upset, but I find it unique to have a heterosexual elf who is also a mage. Usually the straight ones are warrior humans (Cept for Morrigan. heheh)

 

I think the reaction is negative, because it can't be balanced anymore. They give us 8 LI's. They had the chance to give every gender and sexual orientation three options....but they failed. As for me, I'm very upset about it.

The thing is, that was never going to be the case. They promised at least two options, and it was never going to be even.

 

With Solas, you've got to be a specific kind of Inquisitor.

well,if Blackwall is going to be bisexual, straight females will get twice as many options than lesbians. If Vivienne will be bisexual, all sexual orientations have three options except gay guys. Even with the remaining LI being bisexual there is a bad after taste.
