In my family there is a wide range of hair color and eye color. We have blonds brunettes and red heads. Two of my kids have red hair, one is an auburn brown the other is much redder. One is blond. I have dark brown hair and medium brown eyes with golden flakes through them. One red head has dark brown eyes the other hazel where they are more green than brown, the third blue eyes. Two siblings have blue eyes, one hazel (blue/green), mom has hazel (light brown/green) dad blue. three siblings have blonde hair dad and mom both have brown hair, though dad's is lighter than mom's and hers is lighter than mine.

Your family sounds like something Fly'Harel would have fun with.

My boyfriend's are green but have splashes of hazel around the pupil. He will deny this because he doesn't like the idea of any brown pigment in his eyes. But I've spent enough time looking at them.

My mom has really pretty hazel eyes :) I think the brown'ish ring is what both me and my sister inherited from her (both me and my sis have same eyes) - which... is weird? I man, my dad has clear, pale gray eyes with a hint of blue. That's recessive trait, isn't it? Yet instead of our eyes being mostly brown, they're mostly pale-ish gray, save the ring around pupils (with its thickness varying depending on light and its strength or angle).

Well, there are a whole bunch of tropes, so uh....take your pick?

Depends where you're from.

I'm living in a Western country and most people here have blue. I wonder where America got its influx of brown genes, I suppose they're a multicultural melting pot.

And I can't remember what I did for the eye color on my rogue XD.

Top: dad lavellan getting upset about Solas.

I gave my Amell brown eyes.  My Lavellan was at least partially inspired by Harry Potter, so she has Lily Evans' brilliant green eyes  :)

For me I think most eyes are pretty no matter the color. My eyes have a distinct ring around the outside. My kids say it is purple, I don't see it, it looks like a deep grey to me. The thing I absolutely hated about having brown eyes in a family of people that didn't was constantly being told I was so full of S***, my eyes were brown. It was their go to insult anytime I was right and they were stupid.

But I am getting off subject. In the game I have made so many different eye colors. It is by far my favorite feature in CAS I can make them any color I want, now they just need that option for hair color too! I want to be able to do highlights, low-lights etc.!

I meant color color, not eye color  :P. I do find that a lot of times people like eye colors that they aren't used to.

I had a teacher who described the U.S. as a stew  lots of different ingredients, and many of them have mixed together, but you still have your chunks of meat and veggies (there are still a lot of separate cultures all inside the stew). The melting pot comment always reminds me of his lecture

Also another thing re:brown eyes and art. In my fics, for example, I gave Nehn, Nirwen's first love and later close friend, brown eyes. I don't think I've ever once used one of those 'associated with brown eyes' tropes. I've called her eyes precise, said they guard impulse, called them liquid, and other stuff. It's possible to avoid tropes or simply not use the same descriptions.

What gets boring is tying certain character types to the same physical traits. And it can be problematic in terms of excluding non-white people, the majority of whom do have brown eyes. I don't identify as a white person, and most of my family members have various personality traits, and also brown eyes.  :)

Yeah, I agree about the non-white. I do find it weird that none of the darker skinned characters have darker eyes in DA, but I guess DA is its own world with its own rules on genetics and whatnot. In fiction with only brown-eyed characters I think there's a lot more opening for interpretations with colors and personality traits, but as I said before I do think some colors do bare some innate meanings and reactions to them.

Almost all my family has brown eyes and dark hair. My grandmother and aunt have green eyes and blonde hair and my mom says that her sister was favorited because of her coloring. Kind of sad  -_- but I don't doubt it. My extended family is vicious and petty.

My sister has two kids and both of the dads have blue eyes, she wished for blue or green eyes for the first one and they almost looked like they would turn green but then settled on light brown and then when her second came along I told her I bet they'd end up brown and she was in denial saying they were turning green. Ha. Light brown again  ^_^

My other sister's kids all have the darkest brown eyes I've ever seen and they're very flat too so most of the time they just look black.

I love Dad Lavellan. My OC's dad would probably troll him for learning everything in the Fade. What? You learned everything while sleeping? A real man would have learned it through blood ,sweat, and tears. pffft get out of here son. :o

Edit: Brain working backwards, not enough sleep. Had to move some words around.

Yeah...let's assume for a moment that everything works out somehow, and Solas and Lavellan manage to survive and make up.  My Lavellan's dad might be a sweet old storyteller, but she's his only child, the little miracle girl whom he spoiled.  And Solas is responsible for all the pain and heartache she's endured over the last three years.

Dread Wolf or no, it's coming to blows if they ever meet

I love what you can do with eye color in the character creation! The inner and outer iris color was such a great idea! It adds so much variety to the eyes.

That's awful that your family said that about you because of your eye color.  <_< We have chocolate eyes very much! Or earthy eyes... I can't remember who's said it but I've definitely been told I have poopy eyes before... maybe a friend teasing when I was younger  -_-

My Lavellan's dad would probably be intrigued. He's a merchant who has traveled and had interactions with both other clans and humans, so he's no stranger to outside things.  I still have to write more of him (and come up with a suitable name!), but Nirwen is influenced a lot by him, and it's traveling with him that kind of gets her on the path that leads her to the Conclave. So her dad might also feel the slightest guilt. He's a bit of a worrier about his family. And they are the only two in their family of five to share the same lavender eyes.

If it wasn't for the whole "you broke my daughter's heart and nearly got her killed" thing, Solas and my Lavellan's dad would get along quite well.  As it is...well...awkward family gatherings  My Lavellan's mom would eventually warm to Solas, but not her dad.

Living in Middle East, the amount of reverence coloured eyes such as mine or one of my daughter's get is... ridiculous. People wear really scary looking contacts here.

Which is a shame. Brown eyes have many shades and are very beautiful, from the onyx black to the honey-against-sunrays one. My Hawk has black eyes, and most of my toons have brown/green mix, something quite common in central Europe. Bar my Lavellan, whom I made blue/lavender.

One of my high school teachers went on an exchange trip to China.  He had very fair hair that was going silver, and bright blue eyes.  I warned him to wear a hat and sunglasses, or little old Asian women would follow him everywhere.

He didn't listen to me.  And sure enough, kept getting cornered by old ladies

On the subject of Solas' eye color - as someone who has been told, at different points, that I have blue eyes, grey eyes, blue-grey eyes, and greyish-blue eyes (Which is apparently something different) it probably depends on lighting and clothing and such. And what eyeliner he's wearing. But I'm pretty sure Solas doesn't wear eyeliner.

On the subject of my personal life that you probably don't care about - I just finished my pacifist run of Undertale and oh my God. Oh my God you guys. This game. This goddamned game. It's brilliant.

Now I shall bury my feelings in cheese tortellini.

Oh yeah! When I was in Honduras I had a companion with red hair and people (mostly kids) would come up and ask to touch it :D obviously not a color that's seen very often! I was surprised by the amount of blue eyes I saw while I was there though, and there was even a toddler near the building we were working on that had blonde hair and blue eyes!

It's also true that yours was much younger when all this was starting out and Solas was a huge first for her. Nirwen had already been through a long relationship and various other aspects of life, and has two younger siblings. At this point, having her dad lecture her on anything or try to do anything else but chat with Solas post-Trespasser, at ~34ish, it would be a bit weird. Not that parents stop doing the parent thing once you hit 30. I can vouch for it. :P  When I just had a cold recently, my mom kept checking in.

I remember hearing once (And like all things I say that begin with "I remember hearing once," you should probably take it with a grain of salt) that the color people most commonly cite as their favorite is blue. The idea is that blue is the color you see the most in your life, since the sky is blue and the sky is everywhere, so people have come to see it as soothing and familiar no matter where they're from.

By that logic, though, you'd think brown would be more popular since it's the color of dirt...

I am rearraging a chapter and looking through the dialogue I've re-written from the game to help me get Solas' speech pattern right.

I seriously ought to stop putting small notes for myself in these. One day, one of those notes will slip to live version.

"Circle mages call it a barrier between this world and the Fade. But according to my studies in ancient elven lore (liar liar pants on fire), that is a vast oversimplification. Without it..."

Well, he's not exactly lying, is he?  Does creating the Veil count as "studies in ancient elven lore"? :P

Clariel's dad doesn't lecture her, mostly because he feels terrible about the situation.  If it were less serious, she'd get an earful about dating mysterious strangers who turn out to be the Dread Wolf :P

But he's overprotective as all hell.  His current marriage is his second one, and they had her when they were both older and not expecting children at all.  Clariel could be the same age as Nirwen, with the same level of life experience, and he'd still pitch an embarrassing fit

Well, the thing with blue is that is both common and uncommon. A paradox, I know ;)

Basically, the only major thing we know that is persistently blue is the sky - and water (though most of blue we see is reflected from the sky). There are in fact not that many blue things in nature otherwise. A couple of blue flowers, birds, maybe a few reptiles, fish and a couple of minerals...

Which is why it's oftentimes thought of as unusual or otherworldly or divine (though usually in a pleasant way) or distant... And is also probably why I think the mysterious ancient elfy magic in DA is blue as well :D

I have another note there, few lines below it, to indicate he was displeased with my comment in game (which I frankly found illogical but OK). It says "[insert the common human curseword for the hole in Fadebutt] disapproves."
