Well, given that just happened to me recently, sometimes your characters just do whatever the hell they want. You're just typing.

 

At least yours kind of had some plot. Mine started in the second paragraph.

That is how half of my scenes play out. I think of something I want but in the end it was them guiding my hand the whole time. It's both cool and unnerving at the same time.

It happens at times, though usually I write to a general plan in my head. But this time, a quick sitting together before leaving to go back home turned into a makeout and then it was like....well this is actually getting kind of hot...should I leave it here....no, wait, what are you two doing....there's a plot to be told....?

Though the process was a learning experience. Also, it's really distracting to write that sort of thing.

Speaking of parenting, I need to take things out of 'secrets teenagers keep' territory in my story but still working to decide how the parents actually find out.

I was so tired and unporductive tonight. But I managed to do my part of the LyriArt ship: date preparations in the Solavellan household.

The knock sounded more insistent than twenty minutes ago, and much more insistent than an hour ago.

 

“Perhaps we should all go into uthenera until you get ready?” she heard her dad’s grumpy voice from across the door. 

 

“Leave her be, you spent longer than that picking out a hat for the Winter Palace,” replied her mom. “There.” She weaved one last wisp of elemental origin into Lyria’s aura, took a step back, and examined it with pride. “Sweetie, you have the most rare and marvelous spirit in the whole Fade. When he sees you, he’ll be stunned.”

 

“What pyjamas do you think I should wear?”

 

“Something comfortable that makes you feel sexy. And don’t forget your enchanted socks.”

 

“Yes, mom.”

 

“Also, before you do anything, remember to cast wards against demons.”

 

“Yes, mom.”

 

“And what will you do if he tries to force you, tries to possess you, treats you like a jerk, or turns out to be one of your father’s agents?”

 

“Stonefist him.”

 

“That’s my girl.” Mom kissed her on the forehead and headed out the door. “Sleep well.”

Lyria nodded, pretending to pay attention.

 

She was wondering what kind of body Art had made for himself. He was free to choose whatever he liked, of course, but she secretly hoped he had long, flowing hair and looked a lot like an ancient elf. Some ancient elven glory would be nice too.

 

“We are almost there,” said dad. Then he suddenly stopped, turned towards her and looked her straight in the eyes. He spoke in an unusually solemn voice. “Lyria, I want you to please be careful. Relationships can sometimes become serious when you least expect them, and people can get hurt.”

 

“I know, dad” said Lyria, annoyed. “If he acts like a jerk, I’ll stonefist him.”

 

Dad sighed. “See, this is exactly what I fear. You are your mother’s daughter and Art is a gentle spirit, one that is so rare to find in this bleak age. Please try not to hurt him.”

 

“Oh,” said Lyria, surprised. “Of course I won’t.”

I know exactly what he would do. And I'm a little embarrassed by the fact I know, and at the same time tempted to write it.

I'm just trying to decide whether to have one or both tell their parent(s) that they're together now in an 'I fell in love with my best friend' sort of way, or to find out in some more roundabout way, like through a sibling or something.

 

edit:  It hasn't been too productive tonight for me either, and I didn't eat that much. It's 1am and I feel like making a cheese omelette.

Every single time I see people complaining about how the friendship path should include the vallaslin scence I just get quite annoyed.  Petty, I know, but we get one thing.  One thing that is 100% unique to the romance path.

 

Please let the Solasmancers keep that one thing.

She's been in a skirt.

So that means the minute she owns a new pair, Zevran would make some joke about it. And *then* get in her pants.

Sometimes you just need something light. As some of us have mentioned, writing Solavellan these days is a bit rough.

I feel like Mayriya and I work well writing-wise, and this little thing is pure fun. 

 

I had some really angst-inducing ideas that I've been dealing with, but mostly it's been stress and feeling psychologically drained this week. Sometimes writing is thsi awesome outlet that helps me forget grad school angst. (I'd rather be in Thedas dealing with apocalypse boyfriend's shenanigans than dealing with my committee meeting. Thesis committee >>> ancient elven overlords.) But when I feel that I need to work hard to improve the writing, it's another strain on top of it all. 

 

But my current chapter is nowhere nearly as difficult. I'm hopeful to have it done soon

Is it just me or does the latest chapter read like a rough draft? It doesn't even have a title. Should I just wait until tomorrow for her to fix the errors?

Yes, you're both quite good at this breezy, snappy and funny style that lends itself to these little fun ideas. I wish I could write this sort of thing at times instead of always feels of one form or another. I seem to be the deeply feelsy counter to all the witty people I know, even in my offline life.

 

Writing can be a good way to channel stressful things. I think for you, you had that one hurdle to get over in terms of writing and that opened things up. And the thesis committee sounds almost as scary as possibly blighted Evanuris.

 

For me, some stress has been at least helped by thinking about sweet fluff and that AU the evil enablers have been encouraging.

I was trying to think of what would cause an argument between Zevran and Aaryn.....because even the best couples do......and I thought of it.

So, I then proceeded to let the scene play in my head, because it should be a chapter.

And of course.........it led to argument sex.
