Some pages back there was a discussion about the scene where Solas offered to remove Lavellan's vallaslin, and now I'm curious: How many of you chose to not remove the vallaslin and why? My quizzy kept hers because although she is passionate about the past and her culture she still believes in moving forward. She felt that removing the vallaslin would be like removing a part of herself and letting the past dictate her future. After the revelations and the end of the game and in Trespasser (and seeing how beautiful the scene truly is!) I almost wish I had let him remove them (I never change canon decisions though, unless I have a very good reason to).
So is my quizzy the only one who kept her marks? If you kept the vallaslin, what was your reasoning?
Mine kept hers and didn't even think twice about it.
As Quizzy can express in the game, whatever the marks meant in ancient Elvhenan, the Dalish have since reclaimed them and changed their meaning. It's been thousands of years since Elvhenan, and the Dalish have been using the vallaslin for another purpose for centuries. Cultures are not cast in stone; many traditions and symbols change and evolve over the time as societies and geographies and needs change.
On an individual level, my girl chose her design for a number of reasons that had nothing to do with the elvhen gods. Her parents fled the city and her father allowed himself to get caught and hung so his wife and child would have more time to flee, the Dalish are hidden and protected by humans by the trees in the forest, so she picked Mythal's design in part just so the tree design could symbolize the areas of her past she wants to remember and honor. (Then there's the symbolism of just being an adult, being part of the Dalish, etc).
My girl felt that getting rid of the vallaslin just because it used to have unfortunate beginnings is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Getting rid of vallaslin that represents so much good in her life just because it has some bad is like symbolically throwing out all the good in her culture just because it has some bad. (And what culture doesn't have bad in it?)
I always keep the vallasin and can never imagine doing otherwise.
