She's relatively young, so I figured Solas was baggage enough. It's a rough first relationship. Unless you count dorky teenage flirting with Feynriel as baggage

absolute tragedy guys.
I corked out on a pricier-than-usual bottle of wine, only to discover that it had a cork in it. No problem - have a corkscrew. Except, er, I've spent the last fifteen minutes trying to get the cork out and it literally won't budge.
I'm almost ready to cry. I've been looking forward to that bottle for days.
What type of corkscrew do you have? Is the cork synthetic or natural?
Ah yes, I take my kids' candy when they sleep. It's only fair after all.
My friend just wrote and told me that the first trick-or-treater that came to her house stole the whole bag of candy from her hands and ran away!

Also since BioWare kept the backstory vague, I've decided that Clan Lavellan is the nicest, normallest, least apocalyptic clan of warm hugs. Because I can, and elf angst can suck it

That's a fun backstory, does it mean Lavellan was already familiar with Hawke and Varric?
At least one of the clans out to be normal and not perpetually on the very of tragedy. 'The clan of warm hugs,' I like it! Mine was more 'The clan of surviving by the skin of its teeth'. Lavellan was a master at it.
My version of the clan wasn't full of angst. 
There's a little for Nirwen since she's the eldest and a lot of stuff kind of falls on an eldest child. And she went and fell in love with her best friend, which of course, has some cultural tangles if she chooses to continue, which she does.
Other stuff, like the Conclave, and her sister's complicated feelings when Nirwen returns, after seeing her off with the man she was to bond with, with no vallaslin and mystery power, alongside a Tevinter and a spirit who talks oddly, these are direct results of game stuff.
then of course, she comes back post-Trespasser. With more baggage and things to worry about and a new purpose.

Like I said, I sometimes have the emotional range of a teaspoon I enjoy me some elf angst, but too much and I lose interest. So Solas and DA:I supplied the angst for my Lavellan, and I let the rest of her life be relatively happy and normal.
Her father was the clan's informal link to the outside world; he negotiated with human caravans and the occasional surface dwarf, and started bringing her along when she was older. My Lavellan knew of Varric and Hawke by reputation, and she had some idea of what was going on in Kirkwall from Clan Sabrae, though it was a bit distorted.

This reminds me of one of my first drafts of a conversation between an elfquisitor and Varric, where Varric, having just met them, joins them in the pub for a quick pint, asking 'so, what's your story, Lavellan?'. Lavellan laughs, responding, 'Varric, you should know better by now then to ask an elf their backstory. It always ends in tears or violence. Or both.'
Elf angst is fantastic. embrace it.
Hehehe,what's Thedas without endless angst? Sometimes it gets a bit too much, so that's what wildly inappropriate humour is for (thanks Zevran and Isabella! Keep us giggling through the emotional trauma!) I chopped off my Lavellan's arm long before Solas could and she supplied the rest of the angst herself.
I think though that we underestimate how tough nomadic communal living is. It's often a way to make abject poverty and social isolation more bearable, and it is very hard. Lavellan would have nerves of absolute steel. Or dragonbone, pick your metaphor.

Have you seen how big of a border Antiva has with Tevinter? I mean, those Dalish are not only nomads......but they probably deal with slave hunters and such on a regular. And isn't part of Antiva desert? Desert. I lived in one for a little while, not fun(though very beautiful imo). So no wonder they don't mess around.
I want to see Antivan Dalish. They are probably hard core like something serious. Not to mention they probably have some serious swagger because they're from Antiva.
