Man, this whole Solas thing being for elves only really has thrown me for a loop! But, i've spent (probably too much of) the morning planning a Dalish girl just as cool as my slightly-bratty-eccentric-genius noble girl (who I'm rather liking the idea of pairing with Josephine. Or maybe even The Bull? Hmmm....) I was going to romance our Solas with.

Like some of you, I'm not interested in playing the Shem-hating type of Dalish, and was uninterested in playing an elf because of how their culture and attitude seem so pre-defined. Fortunately I LOVE playing black sheep types, and thought, why can't this be any different?

Nejsu (pronounced Nay-SOO) will be a pariah among her clan. Quick to question, quick to doubt, and secretly agnostic. Though she loves the mythology of the Creators, to her it's just that - mythology, and she's equally fascinated by the religions of other cultures. Actually, she's fascinated by other cultures, period - and has a secret stash of Genetivi's books to prove it . Also, while she appreciates the desire to reclaim elven history, she also thinks it's holding the Dalish back, and that they should look forward to the future and build themselves anew - even if it means embracing knowledge from other peoples. This has made her rather unpopular, as you might imagine... Maybe there's even been some scandal in the past with her befriending (or perhaps having an affair with!) a human, even if it didn't last. So she's found solace in nature, and goes out on long solitary hunts to get away (which has made her completely inept socially- if I can give her an aggressive personality without making her too much of a jerk I will - I'd love for her to have a bit of a 'feral' quality). She might even have contemplated leaving her clan, but feels too duty-bound to do so. She will absolutely jump at the chance to go spy on some humans and learn more about them.

This.
My Dalish Mage will have to be like Belle/Ariel or there is no way I can play her. XD
She'll love Elven lore and everything but she'll want to see the world. I dislike the stereotypical Shem-hating traditionalist Dalish characters so she'll have to be different.
She'll love her clan and her heritage but she'll find her life in the clan to be very restrictive. Even though she loves her clan because they are her family, she'll find their dislike of human society and city elves to be a bit grating when she's over here going "it's more complicated than that" (She fits perfectly for Solas :D)
I'm actually starting to warm up to the idea even though I was really upset about my Lady Trevelyan Mage not being with Solas. It's still really hard to get over that...I'm trying though. I feel ungrateful because I was so upset by that, but I am trying. :)

Traditionalist Dalish don't necessarily hate shemlen; the Dalish in general are wary of shemlen in Andrastian lands due to the fact that shemlen are a threat to them, from human lords driving them off their land when they stay too long to templars pursuing mages in the clan. We meet Dalish characters like Lanaya, Cammen, Elora, Athras, and Deygan who aren't outright hostile to a non-elven protagonist, to name just a few. Even Danyla's daughter can be convinced to back down from killing the human who attacked her mother by saying she wouldn't want this - so I'm not seeing why people think that Dalish automatically means that you hate shemlen when this isn't the case. There's actually supposed to be a semi-permanent colony of Dalish living near a Rivaini settlement where the humans follow the Natural Order, and the humans are encouraged to purchase elven goods.

Traditionalist would be more about viewing all spirits as dangerous (and not adhering to the Andrastian distinctions of Spirits and Demons), or along those lines. Which may likely conflict with Soris' own views of spirits and the Beyond, since he seems to have formulated his own views in contrast to what Dalish and Andrastians believe.

My apologies for being so late. I've finally worked up the courage to reemerge from lurking and share my thoughts. And, I need to get them off my chest, I have sleep to attend to. It also took me several hours to write. I have a hard time writing my thoughts down.

Soooooo, Whoo for the Solas romance. I'm not upset he's straight, lots of people are straight. I feel for those who are upset. No, I'm upset and disappointed that he's racegated for only elves. It just made my female elf mage feel insignificant and worthless. Everyone that wants to romance Solas has to play a female elf with the only  big diverse factor being rogue, warrior, or mage. And, that just ruined it for me. It lacks the diversity I was naively looking forward too. I was looking forward to hearing people romance him as another race and having interracial romances with him because it gave me with my fem elf mage a unique feeling. Since, not everyone was going romance him with a fem elf, it made me feel different. Now, everyone is forced to play a fem elf for his romance and now I don't want it; even though that's exactly what I was going to do. I hate blending in, being the same as everybody else. I love being different and standing out. And, that's what I felt before this and now I don't. It makes me sad. I was so excited to play a female elf mage for my first playthrough, especially after finding out they'd be Dalish. Now, I want nothing to do with her. I know that sounds over dramatic, this whole post sounds over dramatic, but I had it in my head that she was straight and only into elves. So I don't want to just change her to fit another romance. Plus I'm personally not interested in any of the other males that would romance females.

I wanted his romanceability to be diverse and opened to more than one race but it's not. Oh well. It hasn't totally affected my hype train, maybe shook it slightly. No, no, I'm wrong, my hype train was derailed it's in need of more Cole to get back on track.

I'm sorry for the length. I'm sorry it may not make any sense, I'm still confused about how to feel about this. Who knows? I may end playing my fem elf mage first and she may romance Solas. I don't know, anymore.

I really do need more Cole. *grabs Asunder* third time really is a charm.

This is a interesting view point here. I think a lot of people would agree with this being the actual reason they are upset about Solas as a romance option. Well...in my opinion.

The only explanation needed for female only is "he's straight."  Even if he never wanted kids, just being straight is enough to justify only being into women.  What is more likely to have a story reason is his interest in elves.  Prior to the addition of racial selection, he was probably not even going to be a romance option at all.  As others speculated, I am guessing he was added into the mix because Iron Bull and some other male romance would have been gated against elves, and Solas evened that out.  If I'm right, that suggests that Cullen is also race-gated, maybe even heavily race-gated.  It would also up Blackwall's chances of being an LI available to all, since the gating of Iron Bull would originally have cut down on options for certain male characters (mostly elves, I'm guessing), and women may otherwise have only a man who's just into humans and a man who's just into elves--and Iron Bull, who was likely initially gated against PROBABLY elves and POSSIBLY dwarves.  But this is just conjecture.

Storywise, for elven gating, though, it could have to do with the eluvians, or the Fade, or ancient elven culture, or Solas's need for elven/human/etc. companionship and the only society that wouldn't persecute him would be the Dalish, even if he fundamentally disagreed with some of their beliefs.

I don't think he needs to have an explanation for his gender preference, it's the race issue which calls some motives into question.

He's stated in his bio to be open-minded and not interested in others who only see him as an elf...so to be so particular with bed partners is surprising to many from what we know so far (which is very little).  If he's straight, why only female elves?  As others have stated, The Masked Empire goes into the Eluvians & elves etc etc, but the other possible factor which is specific to an ElfxElf pairing is children.

/shrug

I see a lot of people perceiving it as a negative when others think it might have to do with Solas wanting an elf child, which I think is unfair.  It's just a possibility.

Also, IB was originally going to be gated to dwarves due to cinematic limitations, not elves.  I don't think Cullen will be gated - even though he was my #1 male choice for race-gating before Solas was announced - I expect it to be a female (Vivienne?).  I'd prefer Blackwall as the final LI, of course, for selfish reasons.

I like to playthrough my characters--helps give them life in my head. But the Keep will be useful for getting some choices. Like selling Fenris.

Oh my  :o,  I don't even know if I could bring myself to do that in the Keep!  I wish I could bring myself to be a bit more ruthless, but I'm just a pathetic softie in my RPing.

There's been a lot of talk about babies being Solas' reasoning for elf-only, but if it turns out he really is an immortal elf, that would make anyone who isn't elven hazardous to his health where longterm relationships are concerned.  That was actually one of the first things that came to mind when we got the news about the restriction.  (He isn't Dalish, so I don't think he would have those beliefs otherwise.)

Yes, exactly! I actually posted something similar last night, but it was late and I was tired and it was probably a garbled mess as a result  :D . I could also be that he's found the key to immortality, and being in a relationship with a non-human would pretty much make that pointless to pursue. And it would be unfair of us to ask it of him, in my opinion, if that's something he wants.

I must say I'm really not convinced by this line of thought. That's very meta gaming. Wouldn't play a character because others would play it the same?

- In fact, Solas being so restricted would actually mean LESS players experiencing the romance arc.

- Anyway, don't see how other players playin elven characters  could affect the experience of someone ingame.

- You get to create your character while playing it and making choices. I doubt we will all have copy cat characters.

One again, I must say I'm really not convinced by this line of thought.

Something else to keep in mind, is that it looks like Solas wasn't originally meant to be a LI.  He may have become a LI after the inclusion of races as a way of giving straight traditional Dalish women more of an option.  If Solas and Sera were already seen as straight and lesbian to begin with, the option for more traditional Dalish men simply was never there.

FemQunari/Sera is adorable. Sleep on it, you might find it cuter than you'd expect. ;)

I think Sera is physically attractive. (She reminds me of a girl I dated years ago.) But I'm not digging her Red Jenny mercenary background plus the "I don't like authority" stuff. I don't know why. In real life I would be friends or date someone like that. But as the Inquisitor leading this super organized Inquisition thing, I feel a bit put off. lol!

Hehe, a shem-hating Dalish could be fun to roleplay!  My issue is that my first playthrough is almost always a sort of self insert because I think it's fun to see how the choices I'd personally make would fit into the fantasy universe :)  I'll explore other ideas in future playthroughs, I'm sure.

Lady Iorveth is go!

Or Solas/Merrill, which might cause adorkable overload.

Also, a (personal) note on why I'm squicked out by the elven babies theory:

Due to health reasons, I cannot have children. I discovered this about a year into my relationship with my current boyfriend (we've been together almost four), and it was a difficult thing to go through. Not that I was even sure i wanted to have children, mind you, but to not have that option was pretty heartbreaking. My boyfriend was amazing during all of it - one of the first things he said to me was 'if we ever decide we want to have children together, I would love to adopt one with you.' So, the idea of my much-anticipated (if fictional) love interest wanting my character for her potential as pure-blooded-baby-maker (even if only partly) rubs me all kinds of wrong. After being relegated to being Alistair's mistress in DAO (if not nobility) for a similar reason, I really really hope Solas' elves-only policy is for a better (and frankly, more interesting) reason.

TBH Sera sounds like a better fit for Hawke's gang than the quizzy's.

Well, it sounds elfy, lol.  I'm generally a fan of just choosing whatever you like as a name.  Though I noticed the writers like using obscure angel names for elves, so that's how I ended up choosing my Inquisitor's name.

I borrowed from Tolkien and played around until I had something that worked well with the -riel ending :D

Yes, if you play any character(regardless or race or gender)you are going to make different choices and actions that affect the game as a whole. SO yes their will never be copy cat characters.

But I think, correct me if I am wrong, ApathyFollow72 might have been implying that a romance arc with Solas may feel a bit repeatative with the option of ONLY being able to romance him with a female elf inquisitor. Again, I could be wrong...but that is what I got out of it.

Hearing all these delicious head canons is totally firing my imagination for my Lavellan, and I'm preeeetty sure idealistic, brainy, Ariel-esque Dalish mage is a go :D

Fialka, I love your ideas for your inquisitor, she sounds adorable <3 And Ispan, thank you friend from me as well because her ideas have helped me a TON :D

Why does everyone think Cullen is gated against elves when he showed clear interest in Surana? :(

But good morning Solas thread! Is it calmer in here today?

Oops! Replied to the wrong page.....so is probably seems random, sorry! They were discussing the race gated romances xD

same here. I have a malformation that would not let me have children in the future. So for me it will be or surrogate mother or adoption if I want children. a depressing thought, since I like children, and I would love one day have at least one.

Don't let adoption be a depressing thought! :)

My cousin and his wife just adopted a beautiful baby boy and they are beside themselves with joy! (They aren't religious, but they went through Catholic charities. It's a great option!) :)

Speaking as someone who has repeatedly played DA2 with male!mage!Hawke friendmancing Fenris almost every time  (I have one rivalmance and one Lady Hawke), it's very possible to find other things in the game to mix things up, whether it's story choices or messing around with different character builds or parties.  But I never seem to tire of playing mage or romancing Fenris, so that might be unique to me, haha.

My first playthrough was a Mage and Pro mage Rivalmance with Fenris. Things got pretty intense and they argued all the time.  But the lovebirds kept together until the end.

I hope we'll have the option to disagree with Solas, if needed, and yet, to keep the romance going. Would be interesting.

I am THE WORST with being hung up on 'canon' playthroughs so I'm not worried about getting bored of Solas either, lmao. I'm the same.  I've tried romancing other characters but then I get distracted by Fenris and accidently hit the flirt button.  Several times.

But my main Hawkes are all pretty different, even if most (all) of them are sarcastic, Lady Hawke mages.
