They were only two-thirds through the bottle, and Solas realized he should have taken Dorian up on the offer to work on his alcohol tolerance.  If he was being honest with himself, he'd hit the point of "inadvisably tipsy" half a glass ago.  But it didn't really matter, because his lovely harellan's ears and cheeks were pink too, and she was almost crying with laughter, reading the top-secret draft of Varric's next manuscript over his shoulder.  

 

"Really?" She put on an affected Orlesian accent and pretended to swoon against the couch arm.  "But zis iz terrible!  Teagaaaaan!"  

 

Solas handed her a paper towel.  "I know.  It's absolutely dire.  I told Varric as much, but apparently, this nonsense sells."

 

"Thanks."  She wiped her eyes, still grinning from ear to ear.  "Who talks like that?"

 

"Did you know that Orlesian nobles used to wear masks all the time?  It's the origin of the tradition of masks for All Soul's Day," said Solas.  "Dorian and I once theorized that the stereotypical accent comes from not being able to hear them properly through the mask."

 

"I'm just drunk enough to believe that."

 

"As am I."  He glanced at the liquid still in the bottle, and back to their empty glasses.  "Are you working tomorrow?"

 

She nodded.  "As much as I'd love to spend tonight passed out on your couch, I should probably sober up."

 

"Please give me some credit.  I wouldn't exile you to the couch."

 

He knew that grin--the one that spelled trouble for him.  It was wider than ever.  She propped herself up on her elbows and stretched her legs across his lap, nearly knocking his laptop askew.  He found himself suddenly mesmerized by the green swirls on her leggings.

 

"OK.  Illuminate me on our hypothetical sleeping arrangements."

 

Two could play at this game.  Solas casually leaned across her legs, under the guise of moving his laptop to the coffee table.

 

"It's quite simple.  I take the couch, and you sleep off the wine in my room.  We both get some rest in a hospitable and appropriate manner."

 

She lapsed into a thoughtful silence, and Solas took the opportunity to cork the wine before either of them got more ideas.  Professor Ameridan wouldn't mind if he showed up a bit late, but he knew how cranky people were without coffee in the mornings.

 

"You're cute when you're all responsible," she said.

 

"You are nearly as bad as Dorian.  One of us has to be responsible."  But he blushed nonetheless, grateful now for the wine's convenient disguise.  He checked the large clock on the wall; the rain had stopped a little while ago, but Dorian still wasn't back, and the coffee shop closed at ten.

 

As though following a cue, the front door opened and Dorian walked in, clutching a huge bag of books protectively against his chest.  He quickly slammed the door shut behind him before the cold air rushed in.

 

He was alone, Solas realized.  "I thought Vivienne was meeting up with you after her seminar?"

 

With some difficulty, Dorian raised his phone in answer, text screen blinking across the room.  Solas dug around in his pocket for his own phone, coming up with one text two hours ago from Vivienne.

 

Out tonight.  Do remember to pace yourself, darling.  And if Dorian leaves one more mug of cold tea in the sink, help me evict him.

 

"Lovely person," said Solas under his breath, though the first two words piqued his interest.  Out with whom?  All of Vivienne's business classmates had minds as narrow as their suits.  Could the speaker she'd booked actually be interesting for a change?

 

As he puzzled over this, he felt a pair of warm legs slip from his lap.  "I should head out," she said with a small smile.  "As much as I'd like to spend tonight in your bed."

 

"Not like that--!"

 

But it was too late.  Dorian had overheard.  "Well, that's my cue to return to my prison.  Solas.  Mademoiselle."  He gave the girl an overwrought bow before heading up the stairs.

 

Solas knew he would be mercilessly teased in the morning, but for now, he couldn't help but laugh with his lovely trickster as she collected her coat and umbrella.  "His prison?" she asked.

 

"After his exams, Dorian will be back to his usual insufferable self," said Solas wearily.  He hadn't minded the peace and quiet, but he missed the old Dorian, though he'd never admit it to anyone else. "Will you be all right, heading home by yourself?"

 

"Yeah.  It's not a far walk to the subway stop on this end, and there are still plenty of people out and about where I live."

 

"Downtown?"

 

She smiled and reached up to touch his cheek.  "Shrewd.  Don't go knocking on every apartment building downtown."

 

He turned into her touch, pressing his lips to her palm, and her startled gasp gave her away.  Slowly, eyes never leaving hers, he took her hand and left a trail of tiny kisses up to her fingertips.  She was the most sensitive at the center of her palm; he'd felt her tremble through his lips.

 

"Solas--" she started, but he pressed her fingertip to his lips in a shushing motion.

 

"I'll see you tomorrow morning?" he murmured.

 

The smile that she gave him wasn't her usual impish grin.  It was hesitant, almost shy, a flicker across her face when he let her go.  She didn't say anything in reply--just continued to smile at him until the door closed behind her.
