His guilt, his regret, is worthless to me, the ordinary Thedosian whose whole life is torn apart by the veil breaking. His actions aren't.

I have a lot of sympathy for him, don't get me wrong, I think he's caught between a rock and a hard place, but I also have sympathy for those affected by what he does. I think we can't lose sight of that - and I think he shouldn't lose sight of that either, if he truly doesn't want to become a monster.

 

I think we all do, which is why he's such a bundle of conflicted, well done character.

Perhaps he does? For all we know him saving South from the Qunari, letting people strengthen themselves and rebuild AND saving Inquisitor is likely him trying to do something about it, even if he thinks that chances of the other solutions succeeding are marginal. 

 

And I don't thin this is just an assumption. He knows Inquisitor will go after him. He states verbatim to liked Quizzy that he will treasure a chance to be wrong.

But that's assuming that there's not even something worse going to happen if some actions aren't going to be taken, no matter how drastic. We know that there are other threats aside from Solas and we know that the world will likely have to change for itself to survive.

 

I have a lot of sympathy for him, don't get me wrong, I think he's caught between a rock and a hard place, but I also have sympathy for those affected by what he does. I think we can't lose sight of that - and I think he shouldn't lose sight of that either, if he truly doesn't want to become a monster.

 

I think all of us have sympathy for those affected by what he does... thing is, everybody has been affected by his actions for a very long time, considering that he's created the Veil and changed the nature of the world from its natural state to something artificial, sundering people from the Fade and making them fearful of it. It might have been the only solution to stop the Evanuris, but it's likely that it destroys more than it saves in the long run and probably has to go anyhow. Question is whether there are ways to remove it and save most of people living now and also without abandoning elves or perhaps those "hiding and hurting, sleeping in a mirror" the numbers of whom we yet don't know and who themselves may be forsaken to either doom or endless suffering if the world stays as it is. And they are also affected, innocent people after all.

I write to avoid doing actual work. I go to work to avoid doing my writing, and I read contrived fanfiction to avoid doing both

 

My Solas and Loki buddy cop version of Inquisition isn't going anywhere until more customers show up.

I'm not doubting his ability to care and it seems to me that in the past he's done a lot of good - if we were in Arlathan right now, I'd have no qualms about my support for him.

In the present though, it seems that his attempts to make things better for the people of Thedas in the short term, whilst preparing for violent destruction of their lives shortly afterwards, is a bit like sticking a plaster over a papercut before chopping off my hand. Or my boss giving me an extra week's holiday before subsequently firing me. Sure, that first thing was very considerate, kind, even - but primarily, right now, I just want my hand and/or job back. I think the latter supersedes the other because it's so severe.

I would not fault the ordinary people of Thedas for being primarily angry at him, for wanting to kill him - given that he has so much power over them, and they're helpless to fight back, to do anything, to even convince him... they're basically hoping for mercy... or for someone to challenge him for their sake. Solas has shifted from being the champion of the helpless to the primary cause of their suffering and that's what I think I don't like.

 

I don't think modern Thedosians are expected to sympathise with him. He is still a compassionate character, and still a champion of the helpless. Unfortunately for modern Thedosians, it's the ancient Elvhen helpless he's championing. To be honest, I think it would be more out of character for him to abandon them, so while I'm extremely uncomfortable with his current plans, I don't hate him for it. But my Lavellan probably wouldn't let him carry them out, depending on what is unveiled in DA4.

Ha, I'd love to see that! Even if it doesn't work out that way, I just can't see Patrick Weekes expecting us to kill him (or maybe I'm being optimistic too). I do remember reading/hearing somewhere that Bioware sees him as an extremely important figure in DA - I think they implied that he was as important as Flemeth, IIRC. So I hope he has more of a role than to lift the Veil and then be killed. Because that would just kill me.
