Yes, but Feynite did not ask for criticism, constructive or otherwise, and has publicly stated that she would prefer not to get those kinds of comments on the fic because it freezes her up as a writer.

I realize that when an author puts something out there, people have a right to express their feelings, but they could at least respect them enough to do so in a space where it is not going to be abusive to the person they're giving criticism to. Like here, for example. We discuss and debate and criticize their work and it's a good venue for it - it's not up in her face, going directly to her inbox.

It wouldn't be half-bad if it was actually legit criticism, but what happened was in the first comment the person who's made a fuss basically passively-aggressively threatened to stop reading her fanfiction unless Feynite caves to her whims and doesn't end the chapters with cliffhangers... Which is both arrogant, entitled and as childish as people threatening to say, unsubscribe from YT channels of a relatively popular Youtuber, if they either won't produce content they want or stop producing what they don't want... As if their patronage was essential to that person or something :/ I'm not any popular Internet person, but it's definitely a behavior that irks me to no end when I see it and if it happened to me I'd only say "good riddance - and don't let the door hit you on the way out !"

Seriously... If someone is so bothered by cliffhanger in a freely available fanfiction that we get to see a new chapter of every few days, they probably should just stop reading it until the series is either done or almost done. Problem solved.

Yes to this. It's the entitlement that I find troubling more than anything else.

Wait, seriously?

Yep, he was asked before Trespasser but the responses were often talking about female only and vaguer, but once Trespasser was out, Weekes confirmed they wanted to avoid the possibility of the Depraved Bisexual trope in response to a fan's tweet.

Oh my god really??!???

MY PEOPLE

lol but srsly I've only ever met a couple other bi's.

I think we should invent like a secret bird call or something.

*stands in the middle of a busy sidewalk* *does bird call* *all the bi's swarm around the bird call and become friends*

^like that

This reminds me of all the pun posts that show up around Bisexual Visibility Day

In terms of myself - I always prefer a female PC, so female Solas would probably be 'the second morrigan' for me - the attractive, mysterious apostate who I am immediately drawn to but immediately frustrated with because she sadly isn't into women (Morrigan would have totally been my first bioware romance experience and probably my canon if she were into girls too), except probably ten times worse.

I totally agree with you about the "second Morrigan" thing. In fact, I'd probably despair and be like, "Why'd you do this to me a second time?!" Morrigan is totally "the one that got away" for my Warden, no lie. If I wasn't so adverse to playing male characters, I would have gone after her in an instant and not looked back, much like how I went for Solas in DAI and didn't look back.

As for the others:

If Cassandra was male: ... To be honest, the introductory scene where Cassandra very aggressively gets in your space, condemns you for a crime you didn't commit, then practically attacks you when you try to protest your innocence, is something I'd have a harder time forgiving for a male character than female. Mainly because I lived with my physically abusive father when I was little, so I still get scared when big men get in my personal space and/or get aggressive with me. It wouldn't matter how sorry or how gentle he was after that, I would never be able to get over or get passed how he treated me when we first met.

Cullen: My issues with a female Cullen would probably be the same that I currently have with Morrigan and Cassandra; "WHY IS SHE STRAIGHT??!!"

Iron Bull: If he was female, all tall and muscled and covered in scars and half-naked (with most of her "pillowy breasts" showing) and with those huge horns sporting a huge battle ax over her shoulder and having tons of experience in bed... woof. *dreamy glaze* Then again, Bull's "casual sex only" relationship and aversion to romance would be a huge turnoff. I was very drawn to Isabela in DA2, but my blood still runs cold at the thought of romancing her because I can't stand casual sex without any mention or promise of love.

The only thing I know for sure: I would definitely romance a female Dorian in a heartbeat. Sexy, snarky, confident, intelligent, funny, beautiful, exotic woman with a firmly functioning moral compass and a desire for a loving, committed, monogamous relationship? YES PLEASE!

Is that seriously what all the fuss has been about with that today? Ugh, well at least Feynite appears to have tough skin because it's folks like that in fandom that make it so we can't have nice things from talented people sometimes.

What if all the Inquisition romances were genderflipped? Eh, I probably just wouldn't romance anyone. Or I would, but wouldn't get into them as much. I really liked Solas' quiet confidence and sophistication. None of the other Inquisition LIs really have that. And given that I'm not even that into M!Dorian, I can't imagine I'd be too into Fem!Dorian either.

Really, the only Inqusition companions I really got into were Solas, Cole and Cassandra. Solas would be uninterested, I likely wouldn't romance Cole even if I had the option, and Cassandra... part of the reason I liked her was because her friendship path seemed so natural. (To go back to Dorian - for me atleast, it seemed like he went from "We hardly know each other" to "You are my only friend in Thedas" in no time flat. Clingy, bro.) Obviously romancing Cass would kind of take away from that.

So yeah, a genderflipped Inquisition would join DA2 in the category of games where no one interested me enough to start a romance.

Curiosity is a character from Feynite's fanfic, Looking Glass. :) She's a darling character. <3 (EDIT: Aaah! 'd)

Also, this gorgeous artwork came across my Tumblr dash. Solavellan noir AU by maizzycakes! (I've watched her art stream of this and it's amazing to see the final version.)

I recommend reading her accompanying fic in the source link. I'm intrigued!  :) (She'll post it on AO3 once she thinks of a title for her fic. xD)

I agree with you, but I worry about what people might have thought if Solas was bi. Lot's of people think my community is a bunch of confused *ssholes already. As much as I would've loved the representation, I would have really been bothered by all the Solas hate more, and how so many people would have pinned the problems they have with his character onto his sexuality, even if subconsciously.

Right when I heard about that "bisexual villain" trope (something like that), my heart sunk. It is exactly what a lot of the extreme Solas haters would do, or even just ignorant people who don't like him, and don't understand bisexuality.

If that trope didn't exist, however, and Solas was bisexual, that would have made me extremely happy. He's my favorite character from anything ever, and it would have been so special to me, as well as a lot of other people, probably.

That trope comes from the negative stereotypes of bisexuals, which does make me sad. If only not so many people thought we were confused and bad people :(

I read a good post by lavellot on tumblr about this, who is very bi-solas.

In short, the trope tends to mean more 'depraved' as relating to sex moreso than any other moral quality. A lot of bisexual love interests - zevran sticks out in particular as a good example - do apparently meet that stereotype, that a bisexual LI will hit on you - and anyone else - straight off the bat, can't live without sex, craves the stuff, can't be faithful or go without (this is important re. the case of Zevran in DA2, where he will have sex with Bela regardless of your warden's relationship with him; I'm inclined to think this is a writer's goof, but STILL), to the point one wonders whether the writers wrote the character with the description 'massive ****' (and not meant in a good way). You can obviously depict a bisexual LI who is very sexually active and enjoys sex without it being a 'depraved' bisexual; I think the distinction depends on how positive the portrayal is, and how much sex, and their attitude to it, constitutes their character.

You could question to the extent it applies in Bioware's games, of course. What is clear though is that if you define 'depraved bisexual' in this way, Solas is not it at all.

Which has led me into rethinking my stance on it. I understand Weekes' caution but I would have rather seen him risk it. Also weren't there sources saying that he made the romance as a straight thing, with a woman in mind?

Except the trope isn't just or even mostly about sex. What you're talking about seems a bit more like Anything That Moves.

Depraved Bisexual is something different, and there are often shades of power imbalance to it, as well as antagonist/villain, sociopathic tendencies, manipulation, even world destroying evil, etc.

This is a very different phenomenon from the Psycho Lesbian trope. Whereas the Psycho Lesbian is usually violent or deranged out of unrequited love and/or jealousy, the typical Depraved Bisexual is bi because, well, why not? Their willingness to sleep with everyone they can is just one facet of their being Ax-Crazy. A slightly less pathological version of the trope depicts the Depraved Bisexual as "simply" supremely manipulative; recognizing the effectiveness of sex as a control mechanism, they resort to it at every opportunity - reasoning that successful seductions gain new thralls, while even unsuccessful ones tend to increase others' fear of you.

With Solas, some people might see a huge power imbalance and feel betrayed by what they consider a turn anyway. If he were also bisexual as well, you might see why some might consider this near or within the lines of this trope.

As far as making the romance with female elves in mind, that part was true, but, given how Solas' plans weren't revealed until Trespasser, IMO, it makes perfect sense WEekes couldn't admit they were trying to avoid even going into potential Depraved Bisexual territory.

What he said was something like 'because we knew how some people would think of him" which to me points to them needing Trespasser out before they could admit this.

I get the feeling that if Dorian was a woman then the backlash against Bioware having a Gay Agenda would be even greater.  I mean, sexy, sassy, smart Tevinter mage and she's locked into f/f?  Yeah.  Dudebro gamers would freak out.
