People are allowed to draw conclusions with the information available. That's how that works. 

 

I don't care that he is heterosexual. What bugs me is his whole "We shouldn't see people as just their race" and yet will only romance Elves. That is what is hypocritical about him. 

 

Oh, okay. Maybe he just finds elves attractive.  Again, people can't help what they find attractive. To our eyes, there may be very little that distinguishes and elven woman from a human woman besides the ears, but (and I hate to make real life analogies but here goes) there is very little that physically distinguishes RL human races, and yet many if not most people are attracted to their own race and end up being with a member of their own race.  

 

Solas has a type.  IMO, that's nothing to crucify the character himself for.

This is somewhat true in my personal experience. I've had folks accuse me of being a closed minded bigot for being repelled by the very idea of - erhm - certain "not so hygienic/sanitary/appetizing" sexual fetishes. And it's funny to accuse me of being a sexually closed minded person since I have openly identified as a gender-fluid pansexual for over the last 15 years.

But having a type isn't exactly plot-significant. That's more analogous to how Iron Bull's gating would've been justified (i.e. the possibility of "breaking"), which was why Epler worked overtime to ungate him.

Which makes me think that it's going to be an elf-exclusive plot point that's going to bring Solas and the Inquisitor together. So it wouldn't be a factor of "will only romance elves", but rather, "will only romance the Inquisitor after [plot point that requires you be an elf] happens". That's how you could square an open-minded Solas with his very specific romance requirements. After all, Solas strikes me as the kind of guy who isn't all that interested in romance in the first place. Or people, for that matter. He's spent his whole life living alone in the wilderness. So perhaps something really specific and significant has to happen for him to fall in love at all. And that happens to only occur if you're a female elf. 

 

I hope this is the case.

I also don't see him as the type to actually look for a relationship, it seems like he's pretty happy on his own. If he just happens to fall in love because of some shared experience that only happens if you're an elf, I think that would be a nice touch, story-wise.

This is why I was hesitant to bring up that RL example.

 

People are allowed to have a type. If that type includes an attraction to some races and not others, then that's just how it is.  That doesn't mean someone is racist.

Okay, you're allowed to, but can't tell you that people aren't going to call you out on your jumping to conclusions when we know so little. Drawing conclusions when there's not substantial information available will garner you people who will accuse you of jumping the gun, that's how it works.
 
I say wait until the game actually comes out before making up a proper conclusion and already saying negative things about characters in their thread.

Also, just because we are, say, qunari (or whatever race) doesn't mean Solas sees us as just a qunari. We likely have a great chance to be a person he will respect, admire, and fight for. We might even be a close friend, confidant, etc. We're just not necessarily someone he wants to sleep with. Or pursue a relationship with. There are plenty of people in my life I feel this way about, and it isn't because I'm close minded, or because I only see these people as (enter physical descriptor here). It doesn't make me a hypocrite if I want to be seen as more than a pre-specified label. And as some have mentioned, real life race is a poor comparison. There really is none in our society we can use. These are different species. And until we know what Solas' reasons (which are supposed to be interesting and SUPER story related) are we shouldn't be do quick to dismiss his character.

Him not being bisexual is a separate issue, and one i can sympathize with. In real life, yes, people are straight because they are and need no further explanation. But this is a fictional character, and a game where inclusivity is supposed to matter, a lot, so I understand the frustration at the lack of equal (based on actual real life) options.

Before implying that Solas is racist or hypocritical or any of the like, I think it's best to assume with how little info we currently have that it has to do with an event. We've already been said the romance in DA:I will be more event oriented. Perhaps Solas goes into the eluvian world and only an elven Inquisitor can find him and bring him back? Or only an elven Inquisitor will be able to travel it with him without getting weary, since every other race does? I'm thinking it'll be an event that is where we will actually get to lock in the romance in the game, and being an elven Inquisitor will be the key to getting something we couldn't access otherwise. I think these are safer bets than assuming bad things about his character. Speculations, people!

His sexuality on the other hand, needs no justification or explanation. There will be straight characters, bi characters, and gay characters. None of them need justification for their sexual preference.

I'll just have to depend on what everyone here says about his romance, and also youtube.

 

I won't be experiencing it for myself because I cannot bring myself to play as a female Inquisitor due to her walking and running animations.  That may sound completely insane to some people, but it is what it is.

As long as Solas is a character, in itself, he should be able to do whatever he wants : I don't understand the racist accusation when it comes to whom you're attracted to. He is not there to please the player. He is there to be Solas. And eventually, if HE fancies you, then you may be in a relationship. Same applies to other LIs.

In real life, insulting someone because you're not his/her type would be... silly.

 

Anyway, can we please move back to unicorns and theories about Solas' background /potential villainy etc. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Yes, because Solas essentially wanting to be recognized as a fully realized equal person and not just an elf, inherently means he must be willing to schloop every female he comes across because... open-minded? Exactly. Which is why I think all of the talk about "type" and who and who he might not be attracted to is kind of missing the point (and is more than a little problematic).

Also in no way do we know whether he sees the elven Inquisitor as "just an elf". He very, very likely doesn't. So really. Whether it's his preference or his seclusion or something story related where the romance can only be locked and fulfilled with an elven female inquisitor, we don't know. Stop judging until the game comes out.
