So I just Finished Inquisition today, I had managed to keep myself entirely unspoiled, with a romanced Lavellen, of course. I cried And I am still crying.

What a brilliant, brilliant game.

Also: I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, ,I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT,I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT, I WAS RIGHT!

Solas was good, he was always good and now he continues to fight for the good of the Elven people.

I am also pretty chuffed that the few stories I wrote with him as protagonist were in this precise vein. The gods as super powerful mages, Solas as one of them seeking to curtail their corruption with intelligence and compassion.

Yay!

I haven't thought about this or read Asunder, but is there any remnant of the real Cole in Cole's body? Cause I thought spirits could only posses living bodies (Wynne and Anders for example).

No.  Compassion copied Cole's body.  He's not possessing anything.

With as much good will in the world, I can't read 600 pages of great contributions, I was wondering if any of the regulars would care to flag up any/the best Solas centric essays, theories for me?

I also don't care if they are mildly anti-Solas...

I finally got round to actually playing my Solavellan sims.  The first thing Revas did was a Heat of the Moment kiss.

That is... so perfect.

(the kiss, for those who don't know, is where one person unexpectedly kisses the other.  If the person they're kissing responsed favourably then they grab the kisser and pull them into a deeper kiss.  Yes, they just did That Kiss in my sims game).

Hi everyone.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinion about what I've written about Solas here. With Trespasser, I think he's become the NPC that triggers most thought in DAI. I've always liked him but with Trespasser he's become my favorite.

It's OK. I think you'll find that what Solas prevented was something like the 1000 year Reich, an absolutist society based on the unassailable power of a few mages who had already shown themselves to be corrupt and untrustworthy by killing one of their number to break rank Mythal, the first martyr. That wasn't going to happen to Solas so he went dark, used cunning, covertcy and ruthlessness and eventually achieved his aim... At a price.

Well, Sable wrote a grad school AU that is perfection and there's now a fanfiction group for anyone who posts here on AO3.

I can't think of any essays or theories at the moment, though.

Message Saved right?

I know the FF group...

Surprised no theories, speculation... C'mon, there has to be!

My theory is that currently Solas is attempting to work out how to save the elves and the rest of the world at the same time. We will see him in future DA games.

Nah, much better than Message Sent.  It doesn't have a title and I think there's a googledoc of it, but she posts it in the thread whenever she writes it.

When I was last here Message Sent was flavour of the month and everyone was raving about it.  I have no issues with AU but if you remove the rebel/conspiracy background from Solas, it would be my view that you are removing some of the fundamental grounding of the character...

For me a fundamental part of Solas is that he has this deep dark shadow, that ultimately no consideration will stop him from doing what he thinks is right... And guilt, piles and piles of guilt, because he is essentially an extremely moral individual. Without this there is no real Solas...

While I liked MS I didn't like the whole hahren/da'len dynamtic of their relationship, and actually found it really creepy.  Eventually that, combined with the fact that the writer made it pretty clear that Ellana and Solas weren't going to meet anytime soon AND the move into smut put me off it completely.  There's still a lot of fans around here, though.

Sable's AU started as a one off joke but it's sort of become its own thing now.  The whole point is that it's the 'in another world' senario.  No rebellion, no gods, just fluff.

I would direct you to the ancient theory thread. If you have played Trespasser, I'd direct you also to around a few hundred pages ago, about the 8th September, when we were all coming up with post-Trespasser theories. At the moment this thread is in fanfiction mode. I'll endeavour to look some stuff up for you.

To an extent, I agree - I wish more AUs attempted to translate that into our world. I really liked flower/ink whilst it was still going because it wrote All New, All Faded For Her into the story which implied Solas was involved - previously - in some work helping illegal immigrants (that was my interpretation; it explains the secrecy, the wariness about calling the police, the different languages).

I think it's a difficult thing to translate though. I was thinking of doing a different take on the gradschool AU with an OOC young!Solas which focussed on Solas + Sera friendship and eventual Solas/Dorian, which would possibly include a chapter or two where he's first thinking about engaging in activism, but it's hard to include without feeling like I'm shoving it down people's throats, which is what I'm always afraid of doing.

Message Sent just began to drag super hard. I still look if I see a chapter posted but it was best in like...the first 8-10 or so and then it started losing steam. The da'len/hahren thing. And the surprise! --this chapter is the first in months and it's completely smut--it didn't even feel like it fit with the rest of the fic.

Even after writing some smut recently, I realize that I still don't like reading it much because it often feels like process. And lots of people are more explicit and writing about a process whereas I wrote (and maybe would read) something less concerned with detail that I hope comes off as a loving and experience-and-feelings-guided thing.

What do you think about this theory?

http://corseque.tumb...st/132445529742

I think that argument relies on that line being mistranslated.

I question why 'make Solas an evanuris' would be in a lullaby in the first place. From the translation it seems to be a propaganda song which has been reinterpreted by the dalish as a lullaby - I imagine it'd probably be directed at the dwarves, the 'little stones' who are allowed dreams, so why they would care who is or who isn't an evanuris? I am skeptical you'd see such a sentiment in a song.

The line itself:

Him Solas Evanuris.

translate individually as:

Him = Become

Solas = Pride

Evanuris = Leaders.

So we have: become/becoming/to become + pride/Solas + evanuris/leaders.

This is from quickly checking the elven wiki, I'm not a linguist and not an expert in elven either, but the order of words is usually interpreted from context and it is sometimes difficult to ascertain what's the subject and what's the object? I mean it could translate as several things:

[Mythal] becomes Pride's leader. (re. Mythal holds dominance over pride).

Becoming the pride of our leaders (similar to 'making out leaders proud').

Pride [Solas] becomes a leader. (where Solas becomes an evanuris).

These are just off the top of my head.

I think the evidence she provides about the orbs is much more convincing, however - why would Fen'Harel have a separate orb if wasn't considered one of them, in some form? I think a lot of the symbolism in Trespasser - the eight-sided star, for instance - points to eight gods, and that propaganda codex piece which says 'Beware of Fen'Harel!' depicts the Evanuris surrounding him as if he was never considered one of them - points to the idea that if he was ever an Evanuris, it would only be a very, very recent addition.

My current theory, I think, is that Solas was once a spirit, bound by Mythal, and served her for many years, eventually becoming one of her top generals in the war against the Titans. I think she recommended him to the Evanuris as a candidate to join them - which wasn't without precedent at that point, Ghilan'nain had joined with Andruil's recommendation, likely. There are a couple of reasons why I reckon this could be true:

1. If Solas was present in Mythal's battles against the Titans, then he probably has expertise to deal with the growing threat of the blight. That knowledge would be supremely useful. Solas, however, betrays little knowledge of such things in his dialogue except in a few of his banters with Varric.

2. Dalish stories say that Fen'Harel was able to walk between the Evanuris and the Forgotten Ones. If these have a grain of truth to them, it's possible that there was a lot of political tensions between these two groups at the time, and Mythal hoped that by promoting Fen'Harel she'd be push the Evanuris towards reform and diplomatic solutions, as someone who stood in between those two groups. Likely she wanted to strengthen her own voice as well by positioning herself as a moderate in relation to him.

I reckon Mythal died during, or shortly after the process, completely breaking off any deals. There was little chance of Fen'Harel being able to push the Evanuris in a direction of reform without Mythal's voice, even if he felt they were worth saving as a group - which he likely didn't after she died. He left (if he ever was an Evanuris) and probably formed a group of rebels, or helped existing ones, to take them down.

I've always argued here that Solas was a member of the pantheon, but not a founding member, he was introduced into the pantheon as Mythal's creature and, quite possibly, her spy and factotum, dogsbody or wolfsbody, if you prefer. So he was, essentially, an outsider, an arriviste, with an outsider's more nuanced view of all the goings on...

I base this view on his comments in the Winter Palace where he seamlessly adopts the persona of the Inquisitor's servant and advises her, following a remark on sex and intrigue, to keep an eye on the service.

I think it's fairly safe to say he did not approve of what he saw. Essentially with Mythal's implicit or explicit consent he set about the undoing of the Evanuris, when she was killed, he pushed ahead with even more determination. He could not take them on head on, they were far more powerful than he, so he used their pride and their vanity against them and set them off against each other, taking down those left standing following the initial frenzy of civil strife.

Uh, why double-post...

Oh well, I'll use that as an opportunity to ask tumblr users a question - is it worth having a secondary blog? Is the fact that secondary blogs can't like or ask or follow an annoyance or not too much, depending on the nature of the blog?

I was thinking about a main artblog where I'd post more polished works or stuff pertaining my own personal or original stuff... and a secondary blog with drafts, sketches as well as things generally about stuff I like, be it games, books and so on. Thing is, I very likely may start and keep to my secondary blog first, considering that if I am to upload stuff, I'd probably start with some sketches or smaller works first... (though that's optimistically assuming that at one point or another I'd be prolific or regular enough to actually have enough content for two blogs )

I use a secondary blog for my DA stuff since I knew if I started putting it on my personal it'd get overwhelming very quickly.

I find the fact that I can't like as my secondary blog pretty irritating but it works for me. If you don't mind people seeing your main blog then it works - and for the most part, if people stumble upon it, I genuinely don't mind. I'm a lot more lax about my identity on the internet than I used to be.

Who do have to ask (/charm/threaten/impress/suborn...) to join the AO3 FF group?

What's your username? I can add you. And anyone is welcome, I think, to add their stories to the collection - just edit your works, and under collection type in 'BSN Solas Thread' and it should come up, and just add it there.

Yeah, basically I'd prefer to keep stuff like fanarts or rougher sketches or drafts or me being more or less random about stuff Iike relatively separate, so it wouldn't clutter the main blog (even if bigger pieces or some activity on secondary blog would be occasionally noted on main one) - I also don't think I'd mind people seeing my main blog, considering that I'd eventually want people to see stuff on it as well (assuming I have stuff on it :D), though naturally I assume people would be more drawn to things like fanarts than original works or personal stuff/projects.
