Nirwen Lavellan, the Spider A Fantasy Novel
by Cee-namon Roll

In an aravel there lived a pregnant, sour spider named Nirwen Lavellan. Not a boring friendly, serene aravel, filled with pieces and a green smell, nor yet a firm, lost, mercurial aravel with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a spider-aravel, and that means shelter.

One day, after a troubling visit from the dragon Solas , Nirwen leaves her aravel and sets out in search of three frightening ducks. A quest undertaken in the company of elves, deer and wise Tevinters.

In the search for the dragon-guarded ducks, Nirwen Lavellan surprises even herself with her necromancy and skill as a warrior.

During her travels, Nirwen rescues a staff, an heirloom belonging to Solas. But when Solas refuses to try feeding, their friendship is over.

However, Solas is wounded at the Battle of Hogwarts and the two reconcile just before Nirwen engages in some serious feeding.

Nirwen accepts one of the three frightening ducks and returns home to her aravel a very wealthy spider.

I haven't read the books but I have seen most of the season of the tv series... I was thinking of maybe I should because it might be better then the tv series.

The books are waaaaay better than the tv series! I started reading them after watching the first two seasons and finished them all over a course of a few months. As a downside I cannot enjoy the show as much as I have before, since there are so many changes made that I don't understand, why they were made. Especially if a strong female character, who actively chases someone in the books and does freaking great on her own (trying not to spoiler here) becomes a stupid damsel in distress so her shiny-armour-boyfriends can rescue her. :pinched:

If you can live with that and with loooong and overly detailed descriptions of everyone's attire and food - go ahead, read them! They're great! :D

Still looking forward to the next season, to see which of the theories that I read about - and find plausible - are true.

Also there was a suspicious tweet by GRRM that may be interpreted as a hint that the 6th book will come out soon. *boarding the hype train*

Noo! I've been looking forward to it for so long! Why is it pish?

Loads of people seem to love it and be really enjoying it so far so I wouldn't say my dislike of it is representative. if you're looking forward to it, read some reviews or watch some gameplay vids or ask others if they like it before writing it off :) it could be largely because the game is not to my tastes.

Maybe spoilers under cut , just to be safe. please note this is only my personal opinion. if you feel differently thats okay. if you dont want to read fallout4 critical opinions, don't click.

Got stuck into the plot generator again.

I have no idea what's going on in this story.

Spoiler

I love the plot generator...I'm so glad I linked it here, it has truly been a lot of fun reading and laughing over the stories and plots everyone has come up with.

Your story is fantastic! The picture just makes it more wonderful...I agree that we need to know more about this charming kettle.

And because there aren't enough love songs out there here's one done in the style of Taylor Swift

I've been playing it for a few hours. I find it enjoyable but for me Bioware trumps Bethesda every time. The Beth games are huge and open but ultimately souless... There are things that intrigue and amuse but they never drag you in screaming and shouting, never make you cry. Plus I prefer fantasy to futurism.

Sigh! I would trade every Beth game there ever was for a decent DA4.... Dogmeat is cute, though.

it's a shame because, I don't compare it to BioWare Games, as BW games and Bethesda games are two different beasts, which excel at and focus on different things (story/plot/deep characters and exploration/open-world/sandbox respectively). I didn't go in looking for a BioWare style RPG I went in knowing it would be more like a Skyrim-style RPG, in terms of less fleshed out characters, thinner narrative traded for exploration freedom etc. And I loved Skyrim. for different reasons to reasons I love BW for. but still really disappointed with FO4.

Solas, we know Skyhold is technically your castle, but that's not an excuse to sit on the Inquisitor's throne...

And now, it's time to re-enact the romance scenes from the game.

(spoiler for lenght!)

Spoiler

If only the Inquisitor had thought of that in the real game :P

You are a better gamer than I. I've foolishly gone into every game I've played since Knights of the Old Republic looking for Bioware style goodness and walking away terribly disappointed. People have pointed me at Japanese RPGs and Bethesda, and it just doesn't work for me. I've only enjoyed a handful of non-Bioware games: Beyond Good and Evil, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, and the Fable series. I'm so much fun.

Pillars of Eternity?  Or the new-ish Shadowrun Returns series?

Yeah I agree, Bethesda has the atmosphere (I'll never forget walking up to the Dark Brotherhood sanctum) while Bioware has the relationships and story.

Not to play Devil's advocate, but isn't pre-apocolypse fallout set in like the 50s? So it wouldn't be so culturally out-of-place to play someone that was closeted? Maaaybe.

Okay I'm going to start the hopefully last leg of my drawing today. Wish me luck falons. Luck and thirst.

Someone gave me Tales of Symphonia, after recommending it extensively. I can't play it till I get home tomorrow, but I anticipate confusion and terror. I really only ever play bioware/obsidian rpgs. JRPGs are unexplored territory which, as the hinterlands have taught me, means its probably filled with bears.

Those are PC only games, right? Until we upgraded for Inquisition I was stuck on a 360, so I haven't played much on PC since back when I was making custom skins for Sims 2! I know everyone's been talking about Pillars of Eternity, and I do love Obsidian for their work on KOTOR II. I might check it out when I get sick of alternating between DAI and Mass Effect mutliplayer.

Nothing really scratches the itch like a good Bioware game.

I'm actually really wary of Obsidian gmaes after playing KOTOR II, but all this Fallout stuff makes me kind of almost consider trying Fallout: New Vegas (which I own) with the right mods installed to take the bugs out.

Oh that's right. You don't like KOTOR II. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment, because I loved it. Though I suppose there may be nostalgia goggles at work because it was my first real rpg after years of abstaining. You can manipulate me into destroying the force any day, Kreia!

Also, I hear New Vegas is great, but it single handedly fried my laptop :D

Yes, I know KOTOR II was released with tons of bugs and a sloppily truncated ending, but it had such potential. The plot of that game was much better, less black and white, than the first KOTOR. The characters are more interesting. I love it despite its flaws. Everything in that game is so deliciously grey. The restoration mod does a good job of fixing it up for those who miss the cut content.

Solas and Flemeth would fit in just fine with Kreia and Atton, I think.  ;)

Edit: It also features a kickhalla companion who only has one arm!

I'm currently playing Divinity: Original Sin with a friend, and I'm having a blast! It's a turn based role-playing game in which you can heavily customize your characters stats, abilities, skills... Obviously the characters you meet in the game are not up to Bioware standard, but they are so creative in how you solve problems (A ship at the docs is burning? Cast a rainspell and graciously receive everyone's gratitude!). I found it to be more enjoyable when playing with a friend as you can discuss strategies, and also when your characters disagrees on something Divinity resolves it with a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. :D

It wasn't the bugginess, it was the plot, the pacing, the characters, and most of all, Kreia. I played it for the first time last year with the restored content mod and add-ons. I was really surprised because I loved the first game and this one was so....annoying and I had Kreia, the thorn in my side who it was clear would inevitably betray me and I had to just keep playing until the game said she would do that'. Dragged out, sour feeling to the whole game. Mass Effect 3 did bleak and urgent intensity better, with questions and people calling you out on occasion without making you feel super judged and criticized.

I did love Atton, Visas, T-3, Bao-Dur, and Mira. But they still felt underwritten and that is likely also due to things that were cut.

My favorite thing about it was helping and hanging out with the Ithorians. My favorite Star Wars race. Of course, the poor Ithorians were attacked and killed.

It was a really draggy and sour experience. The end was a downer no matter what. The ultimate downer was when I read that after surviving all of this, canon killed off the Exile just a year after the end of the game.

But I do think Solas is like Kreia, but done a lot better. Like....a lot better. I love Solas, clearly. Kreia had no emotional impact on me other than boredom and irritation.

My husband preferred KoTOR II over the first one. I have to be honest, though, I greatly preferred the first one (played I multiple times and II only once). In fact, I'd go so far as to say I loathed KoTOR II.

Solas is definitely done a lot better, (although he did have three games of build up plus a three year development cycle) but I liked having a cranky grandma hovering over your shoulder. Like Wynne, if she was secretly Loghain. The pacing was floored and the atmosphere was very hit and miss, but it was so nice to see something star wars call out the mythology on it's nonsense.  That said it completely ruined any incarnation of the jedi for me. Black and white is so disappointing now :(

My main problems with the first KoTOR were 1) Carth and 2) Bastilla. I think I empathized more with the Exile than amnesia stricken Revan too.

To each his or her own.

Oddly enough, after everything Solas reminds me more of Atton than Kreia. Atton Rand another man with a pathological past who has to be saved from himself, in a way.
