When Solas was talking about Spirits back in Haven, his explanations about why spirits are people too are so passionate but intelligent. My Adaar was skeptical so I got some slight disapprovals but he was really good at convincing me to change my views on spirits. Until this point, I've always viewed the spirits as lesser because they are so easily swayed by mortals and can turn into demons quite easily. This was my defence but Solas countered this quite logically. I was humbled. Not Adaar. But me IRL. I didn't realise I was being a speciest. I just thought that if there were sentient beings IRL similar to Cole, I shouldn't think that they are lesser than humans.
This is why when Cole's personal quest came up, it was very easy for me to choose to make him even more of a Spirit. Plus, I think Thedas needs more Spirits of Compassion rather than another human.
Did Solas have this kind of impact on you? Has he made you reconsider your world view IRL?
Not exactly. I've always been of the opinion that sentience is a spectrum, and anything (human, AI, alien, etc.) that is self-aware can be considered a person. But like you, I was very surprised by the depth of conversation with my Adaar, who disagreed with Solas about spirits and blood magic. I feel like that's a side of him that the game doesn't show very often.
We joke about Solas approving when Lavellan breathes, or disapproving of everything than an Assquisitor does, but a thoughtful Inquisitor who respectfully disagrees with him produces some really thought-provoking conversation. Unlike some other companions, he's perfectly happy to debate with you, and I think that says a lot about who he is as a person. The slight approval hits are IMO nothing compared to some of the massive ones you can take with other companions. Remember arguing about mages with Anders and Fenris? ![]()
