Today I'm celebrating getting even closer to turning 30, so I invite everyone in the Blanket Fort to celebrate with me! In this corner here you will find the cake and cookies, here is the lemonade, and over in that corner... nonono not there, that is the smut corner! 

 

You guys are so amazing, you are such incredibly talented authors/writers/theory crafters, and also amazingly nice people. I often feel that in comparison I don't contribute nearly enough to this thread (and unless you consider stick-figures art you will never see anything drawn by me). I'm just glad to be along for the ride through the hellspiral! So enjoy my imaginary party, we will need to keep our spirits up for the long wait ahead of us!

Sera/Dagna are the best.  I almost don't want to romance Sera now because I don't want to break up her and Widdles.

 

I have the same problem with Bull and Dorian. They're so bloody adorable together; I feel actively guilty if I pull them apart.

 

 

ALSO, I think I've finally decided on my next playthrough of Inquisition. I've wanted to do a female vasoth mage since... well, she was actually going to be my initial choice until I realised how little qunari-relevent dialogue/plot there was . And I've realised my charming, wacky mage would actually make the perfect choice for Josie (aka. the perfect swan princess). I have been tempted by Josie in literally every playthrough just because she's so nice and accepting and sweet, but my inquisitor has never felt 'right' for them, somehow.

I mean, my Lavellan was more timid/tactful than my characters tend to be anyway, and my Trevelyn was like that ranked up to 11. I got reaaally bored of playing by-the-book chantry girl, especially after my Adaar, who was a much more unusual/interesting Andrastian character to play.

 

Some day I'll try dating Cully-Wully for real, but it will probably be with a completely left-field character. I mean, he was into my Surana, and she was damn weird.

 

Also - out of interest, do any of your characters live in the same timelines? Most of my wardens and inquisitors all co-exist in my head, but some aren't recruited, or die at key points (ostagar/the conclave).

It's grad AU time!  First time I've written a direct continuation, so if you missed the previous grad AU post, this one won't make very much sense    Link if you want to catch up reading.

What a strange question.  Solas sifted through his formal education; he'd read some poetry and literature, and he vaguely remembered studying a religious chant to Mythal at some point.  Somehow, he didn't think she was asking about the popular nonsense that came blasting out of Dorian's speakers.

 

"I honestly can't say much about music," he admitted.  "Did you study it?"

 

She nodded.  "It's easier if I show you."

 

She jumped up from the table and hurried to retrieve her laptop behind the counter.  Solas hastily pulled up another table to hold all his exam papers.  He stole a glance at the clock; he had a half hour to spare before his good intentions of grading everything today became unreasonable.

 

When she opened the laptop, he glimpsed a mess of color-coded bars, labeled with things like "Drums 1," "Violin 2," "Synth 2."  She tapped a few buttons, and all the bars disappeared, leaving a huge green "play" button behind.  She fumbled for a moment with a handful of earbuds and wire before extending them to him.  For a moment, she looked like she desperately wanted to say something more.  Then she just shook her head and gestured to the laptop.

 

Now powerfully curious, Solas put in the earbuds, pressed play, and closed his eyes.

 

It started with a single harpsichord.  A few soft, almost hesitant notes like a handful of raindrops.  But in seconds, the raindrops turned to a torrent, then faded into the background under a pair of violins.  One soared over everything else, and he had a sudden, powerful impression of a bird's wingbeats when drums entered the mix.  With a start, he realized he knew the violin's tune, though he couldn't place it for the life of him.  He opened his eyes to see her watching him, fingers fidgeting with the hem of her apron.

 

He smiled, and some of the tension left her shoulders.  Solas let his eyes drift closed again, let the weaving melody and layers of rhythm carry him off until it left him with only the harpsichord, then silence.  He sat there for a few more moments, not wanting it to end, before he reluctantly pulled out the earbuds and opened his eyes.

 

"If Dorian played music like that, I wouldn't hide his speakers," he said.

 

She gave a startled laugh.  "Well.  I'll...take that as a compliment."

 

"Very much so.  I recognized the tune," he said, replaying it in his head.

 

"It's an old Dalish lullaby," she explained.  "I rearranged it." 

 

"Is your family Dalish?" It would explain her trouble with classical elvhen; the bits and pieces that still saw use in modern Dalish culture didn't sound like the historical language anymore.

 

"On both sides."  She watched him almost warily, as though she expected some sort of comment on her heritage, but he said nothing.

 

The play button on the screen was gone, replaced once more by dizzying bars of sound.  Solas scrolled through the labyrinthine list, skimming over the attached notes.  The one labelled "vocal" was still empty, and he started to get an idea of where this was going.  But he asked anyway, just to be sure.  

 

"You know the words.  Why haven't you added them?"

 

She took her laptop back, pulled out the earbuds, and took her time closing the program before she finally answered.  

 

"It didn't sound right."  She gestured at the elvhen-common dictionary.  "Neither did translating it to common.  But I remembered that ancient elvhen has a cadence to it.  A rhythm, like music.  So I decided to try that."

 

"In spite of the language being difficult to learn and use."  Solas folded his hands in his lap.  "Well.  You don't lack for ambition."

 

She rolled her eyes. "No, just common sense."  

 

"Curiosity is always an admirable quality," said Solas sharply.  How many times had he heard some variation of that sentiment?  Why study history?  Why bother learning more about the world?  What was the sense in knowledge for its own sake?  "Anyone who dissuades you from seeking knowledge is a narrow-minded fool."

 

The nervous frown that creased her brow finally disappeared.  "Thanks, Professor," she said, her usual teasing smile back in place.

 

"And I'll take that as a compliment."

 

They both laughed.  A single sunbeam crept through the curtains across her face, and he impulsively leaned forward to touch her hand.

 

"Thank you," he said.  "For sharing this with me.  I would be happy to help you."

 

He knew how hard it was to share your work, something containing your heart and soul and effort, with anyone else.  So when she squeezed his fingers and blushed in lieu of saying anything, he understood...and squeezed back.  

 

If any of you are curious, Lindsey Stirling and Malukah are the RL inspirations for Lavellan's music.

I'm comparing the number of posts here in the Solas Thread against the others in this forum and I gotta say... WOW.  Though not entirely surprised.  In my continuing Solas Thread adventure, I am now reading December 20 posts on page 1489. 

 

Solas is a new character and yet he has the most post.  Overtaking Cullen even who has been a known character since DAO and apparently has a large fan base. I was very surprised by this.  I honestly didn't get the appeal.  He has become a better character in DAI and BW has done a good job making him attractive.  Attractive enough that I once thought of romancing him but then SOLAS.  After my Solasmance PT, I will create a human one for him. Or I'll just watch it on youtube.

 

And another thing that DAI made me do.  Play a female PC.  I am a straight woman IRL but I do enjoy RP-ing as a dude in games.  DAI made me play as a Lady Adaar because she's awesomely hot and I enjoy towering over everyone and Lady Lavellan because SOLAS.

I still like my Mia Trevelyan (rogue) She's not the conventional nobleman's daughter, she's a bit of a free spirit and does her own thing. Her brother too. I'm touching on her and Cullen's romance a bit in my current story. I was going to write it as a separate but part of a series piece, and I may, but not at the same time I'm writing this one and the NaNoWriMo it's just too much to juggle plus school and kids.

 

I think of the other wardens and possible Heralds as living around the same time line, some fall to the tragedy of their origin story while others might make an appearance in a future chapter.

My Trevelyan was meant to be a naive chantry girl.  But then she started taking control and I've ended up with a generally very nice, quite sarcastic brutal player of the Game.  She does make mistakes early on - going to the Templars because she wanted help against the rebellion and accidently causing the deaths of the majoirty of the rebellion and Grand Enchanter Fiona for instance - but she grows in her leadership abilities and skills at the game until she verbally taking down Orlasian nobles who think some girl from the Free Marchers who has lived her entire life in the Tower will be a pushover.  And she's clearly a lesbian.  It's like... taking the Cullen flirt with her felt wrong.  Sometimes you have to listen to where the characters take you.

 

Also, three of my Inquisitors exist in the same universe.  Revas, Saith and my unnamed rogue Lavellan all exist together.  Revas and Saith are twins and one is the First and the other is the Second (which one that is depends on which one I'm playing).  Unamed rogue is an ex-girlfriend of Revas (totally cleared the backstory copy with Cee, don't worry) and was meant to be my Josiemance before my Trevelyan started making the moves on her.  Probably still going to play as her, though.

Yes, I do the exact same thing - it doesn't hurt that it's a really powerful helmet, and I always have helmets turned off.

In the middle of my first PT, my cullenmancing mage Trev wanted to romance Solas instead. I somehow endured the PT till the end though, imagining they had an awesome friendmance.

Then I decided: Can I go templar route and make as many choices Solas doesn't like as possible? It was a fun challenge, coming up with a way this would make sense for a Dalish mage. After many nights lying awake and coming up with random stuff about her, she turned into a ginger, green-eyed, Dirthamen-maked, atheist, pro-templar, sarcastic sociopath.
