Yes, I do the exact same thing - it doesn't hurt that it's a really powerful helmet, and I always have helmets turned off.
Between playing as Adaar (vitaar instead of helmets) and having helmets turned off all the time, I barely remember that helmets are actually a physical object that you wear. It's just like, "Oh, this thing that gives me better stats. OK!" It could be a tea cozy, and I wouldn't notice.

Nope. Helmets on for me.
In the middle of my first PT, my cullenmancing mage Trev wanted to romance Solas instead. I somehow endured the PT till the end though, imagining they had an awesome friendmance.
My Lavellan changed so much from her original character. In the begining she was blond, blue eyes, worshipped the gods, had Mythal's vallaslin, had zero snark, supported mage freedom, and tried to be friends with everyone.
Then I decided: Can I go templar route and make as many choices Solas doesn't like as possible? It was a fun challenge, coming up with a way this would make sense for a Dalish mage. After many nights lying awake and coming up with random stuff about her, she turned into a ginger, green-eyed, Dirthamen-maked, atheist, pro-templar, sarcastic sociopath.
That's an interesting thing: would Solas fall for a sociopath? Solas' big thing is empathy and compassion, after all.

This sounds like what happened to my Hawke. She was pretty nice for a while. But romancing Anders brought out the absolute worst in her. And it only continued to spiral into scarier territory as the game went on.

I have helmets on and go through great length to equip everyone with story-consistent gear, even if the stats suffer. When I see people (my husband, to be precise) put a Warden armor on Solas, it almost physically hurts me.
Those I suppose for the Qunari armor, one could come up with reasons why he's wearing it ![]()
@Shallow waters: I never even made a Trevelyan to begin with because just the thought of playing a "by the book" Chantry girl bores me stupid.
However, I am having trouble finishing my Cullen romance because a) Solas, b ) it's hard to ignore the strong culture and value differences. A former Templar who still believes in the Templar Order, Circles, and Chantry, verses "heathen" elven mage who strongly believes in mage freedom, elven rights, and religious autonomy. Hmm... even if you play the "Cullen is accepting/open-minded" card, I personally have a hard time looking past "Your Templars attack and lock up my people and your Chantry demonizes my religion, and if we had met ten years ago you would have supported attacking or imprisoning me." I personally have a hard time getting over that.
Yet, in other ways it's difficult because in a way he is more accepting than Solas or Sera (who keep holding your Dalish heritage against you) and shares a lot of the same moral values (disliking "The Game," believing in honesty and altruism, etc). Even my character was just a city elf I could see them getting along well, but the Dalish culture and upbr (who have too much firsthand experience being persecuted by Templars and Chantry officials) gives the whole romance an emotional roadblock for me. =/
'Mages are not people like you and me.'
I'm never getting over that line. I'd love to romance him with an elven mage but then I remember that line and also remember that since Amell never exists in any of my worldstates (with the sole exception of my worst worldstate and they're the only two that are mutually exclusive and I consider Surana to be the canon mage) I get the creepy vibe of Cullen just wants Lavellan to put on a red wig and let him call her 'Kes'.

I like Cullen's Trespasser content if you're romancing him with a Dalish quizzy. And my BFF plays a Trevelyan who's the most casual Andrastian ever. She believes in the Maker and Andraste but beyond that, she doesn't give two f***s. It's really funny watching the game try to figure out what to do with a character who believes there's some kind of divine providence, then turns around and tears the Chantry a new one ![]()

I can't help it. Solas looks so damn good in the Warden armor! And besides, accidentally lighting your clothes on fire can justify almost any change of wardrobe. Unless you're Viv. Viv would rather die than venture out into the wilderness without extra clothes of her own ![]()

My Assquisitor is all 'sure I'm the Herald, whatever' and also doesn't believe in the Maker. Or the Chantry. And she's the Herald entirely for her own power and profit.
After my Solasmance PT, my Cullenmance PT would be next. I will give him a Trevelyan who will be an equivalent to a fundie. Pro-Chantry, pro-Templar, pro-Circle, magic-is-bad warrior Trevelayan. Basically, what Cullen was like in DAO. Solas would hate Lady Trevelyan, Sera would love her.

That's more DA2 Cullen. DAO Cullen is more 'mages and Templar's can be FRIENDS'. Prior to the events of Broken Circle, anyway.
IMO, it's up to headcanon how much exposure Lavellan had to the templars and the Chantry. Clan Lavellan's description says they try to avoid trouble with humans, and I interpreted that to mean keeping to themselves within reason. They had dealings with normal people--merchants, farmers, peasants, etc.--but packed up and moved at the first rumor of trouble from templars, guards, or other authority figures.
This means that in my headcanon, Lavellan never even spoke to a templar until after the rebellion started to spill out into the countryside. Templars were threatening, but more like the bogeyman to my Lavellan. And the bogeyman stops being scary once you realize he's just a person.
That's an interesting thing: would Solas fall for a sociopath? Solas' big thing is empathy and compassion, after all.
In terms of game mechanics, it seems to work ![]()
In terms of story: The short answer is I think about that a lot, and try to work on ways in which he might. ![]()
Long answer: I used sociopath to loosely denote some of the behaviors associated with antisocial personality disorder, although without expertise in psychology I don't know if my Lavellan would fully qualify for such a diagnosis. But people like that don't have to lack empathy and compassion, although these qualities can be dormant for some reason, just like they were dormant for Solas at some point in the past.
In general, I think some things which may convince Solas to fall for a Lavellan that does not act compassionately are:
I have helmets on and go through great length to equip everyone with story-consistent gear, even if the stats suffer. When I see people (my husband, to be precise) put a Warden armor on Solas, it almost physically hurts me.

I love putting Solas in Warden armor or better yet, Dalish scout armor because hyuk hyuk hyuk douchebag lavellan laughter

Sigh. All the cruelty.
nb I'm not knocking the Dalish, I love the Dalish.. poking fun specifically at my Lavellan who is a genuine jerk in a lot of ways thats all ![]()
I think I mentioned ages ago that my Lavellan wore the helmet for the entire of Trespasser because it had been a gift from Solas after the Ball since she seemed to like
making fun ofit so much.
Wait, you can get his hat as an equippable item? Where? I want this so bad.
I've always been part of team hat, it's beautiful. I understand that if you want beautiful screenshots of dazzling robes, the hat might not be your thing, but most of my screenshots are goofy anyway, the hat just adds to Solas' charm and confirms that he's ultimately a massive dork even when he's in full on courtroom charm mode.

This is my problem as well. I can't really justify why any of my free spirited Lavellans - whether fascinated by ancient magic and secrets the dalish promise, or passionate pro-dalish, pro-clan, to the exclusion of all else, out of loyalty - would be interested. Lavellans are either apostates, or have previously harboured apostates/are apostate-sympahisers just by how their clan works - dating a templar isn't exactly 'safe'.
Also, replaying DA2 has reminded me of exactly how bad he was only a few years ago, as Illyria has already stated. I know in DA:I he's got all the bite of a wet blanket, he's just pure fluff under the bluster, but those kinds of remarks feel kind of uncomfortable playing as a mage.
In general, I'm also not that fond of human/dalish relationships personally because they usually mean the dalish elf in question might not be able to return to their clan, especially if children are involved, and I think that gives the human a big power over the dalish elf which could be abused horribly (not necessarily, of course, many have really happy relationships, and I think that's 100% cool, it's just I'm very wary of that sort of factor as a player, myself). I think this applies even more so with a very pro-chantry figure like Cullen, who has a templar background. Besides, as a Lavellan, there are a bunch of more interesting options open to you if you fancy a relationship with some antagonism/tension built into it (this is a game where you can romance the bloody Dread Wolf. Or Sera, I suppose).

The Hissing Waste puppy sells one, but I crafted mine. I think I got the schematic from the BE?

This. Wearing a ridiculous passive-agressive hat is just so Solas and it gives me feels.

... I jokingly headcanon (well not really, but with my Lavellan it's not beyond the realm of possibility!) it that in my Solavellan playthrough he's wearing the helmet to hide strategically placed hickeys ;D - a revenge of sort for leaving a few love bites a day earlier which prevent Lavellan from wearing her pwetty ballgown ![]()
In terms of game mechanics, it seems to work
Solas's demeanor and attitude already change based on whether quizzy is friendly to him or not. IMO (although this is strictly headcanon), there are enough facets of his personality where different Inquisitors will bring out different traits in him. Sweet, gentle Clariel Lavellan and boisterous, stubborn Tash Adaar get very different reactions from Solas even without considering the romance, although he wound up in 100% approval territory with both of them. So I can see how a quizzy like Sophia triggers Solas's emo rockstar side ![]()

My headcanon for hickeys is:
1. He walks around with one on his neck for half a day, wondering why everyone is giving him strange looks, and getting increasingly worried.
2. When he sees it, he doesn't know what it is (pre-Veil bodies don't get hickeys) and freaks out, WTF is happening to his body.
3. The hickey was very intentionally placed by my Lavellan who spies on all of this with great enjoyment.

I'm glad emo rockstar Solas made some sense.
So much mental gymnastics went into bringing out that part of him.

I bought one from that merchant and had it on Nirwen for a long time. Good thing I turn helmets off.
