Just wanted to (randomly) say that I am really grateful to those of you who post Solas/Solavellan art. I don't have time to go searching for it myself, so having a place I can stop by and quickly enjoy it is greatly appreciated!

I'm happy with Cullen in the friendzone  After the extremely awkward and weird thing with him and my Amell, I'd rather not poke that hive.  He can be a bro to my Lavellan and Adaar, and date my BFF's Trev who never had Amell or Surana in her canon.

 

Trouble with that is all the potential wardens exist in canon.  Meaning that no matter what worldstate I load Cullen had a crush on Kes (wit the one exception of the worldstate where I play as Amell)

When playing DAI for the first time, the game crashed after my first attempt to create a character. Then it crashed after my second attempt.
The third finally succeeded and saved.

I had problems with CTD when DAI first came out too. And lost an hour of work on Lavellan. Love that game but man they bit off more than they could chew at launch.

DA:I crashed three times for me in the CC initially, then crashed at random intervals during gameplay (usually at least once an hour) for the first week I played it. I was very save-happy and reached the hard limit of 250 saves very quickly.

DAI Cullen, who as I said, I tend to separate from previous Cullen because....yeah, would be pretty much the best type of boyfriend iRL. Especially with a dog.

 

But in game, I just....Solas was more charming, Cassandra was straight, Josie is too much like me, Bull isn't my type, Sera was too difficult with an elf...Cullen is sweet and I just don't know if it was my previous dislike of Cullen, the character I was playing, or what, but I just couldn't.

 

I can't really bring myself to invest in Cullen either. And I tried, oh, I tried hard to go with Cullen instead. I mean, I was interested in Solas from the moment I read his pre-release character bio - but by then I had already decided that, hey, I liked Cullen in previous games, he'll make a great romance! But then I got the game and... I dunno, something about Cullen. He's nice, yeah! But he's also so... plain. Like Alistair, but without Alistair's charm or humor. Like - Solas is such a quiet character that it's easy to pin him as boring, but he has so much complexity and nuance beneath his reservation. Cullen on the other hand... I can't find anything deeper to him, even during the romance (Which you'd think would give the deepest view of a character) so the further I got the less interested I became. And then I triggered Solas' fade scene, and you see such an interesting side to Solas there. He's open, good-humored, mischievous - giddy, almost. Between that and the Veil Fire scene I was beginning to realize how layered this guy was - and then that kiss prompt popped up...

 

After getting that scene, I immediately reloaded and had the kiss with Cullen  I was hoping that he'd have something comparable, if not even more intriguing - because, I mean, surely the designers knew Cullen would be the break-out romance and put the most effort, the best writing, the most resources into him, right? But in comparison, Cullen's seems so.. perfunctory. Like, "Hey, I'm your love interest, let's make out now, check that off the list!" The Solasmance has less content, but in some ways I think that helped it. Weekes had so little to work with that he had to make the romance a natural extension of the friendship, rather than a separate path. It makes the Solasmance feel a lot more organic. 

 

I'd say Solas stole my Lavellan from Cullen, but really, even if Solas weren't romancable I think my Lavellan would've ended it eventually anyway. Cullen just seemed so flat to me. And Solas is so fascinating...

You guys are so amazing, you are such incredibly talented authors/writers/theory crafters, and also amazingly nice people. I often feel that in comparison I don't contribute nearly enough to this thread (and unless you consider stick-figures art you will never see anything drawn by me). I'm just glad to be along for the ride through the hellspiral! So enjoy my imaginary party, we will need to keep our spirits up for the long wait ahead of us!

The amusing thing was later finding those crash casualties in Keep (before they let you delete character profiles) but obviously no files attached to them in game.

I am now at the point in the thread when the developer liner notes was discovered.  Oh lordy, I am enjoying all the posts.  I am enjoying the Loghain comparisons.  FYI, in my original DAO PT, I had him killed because I was romancing Alistair and was seeing events from the Warden's point of view.  So Loghain to me seemed evil.  Years later, through discussion with other people and listening to Loghain's dialogues and party banter, I realised it is more complicated than that.  And now, I'm replaying DAO again, I'm actually finding Alistair a bit whiney.

 

"It's More Complicated Than That" should be Solas's motto.
