Honestly, I always respect characters like Solas more when they make the hard decisions. I hate that trope of choosing your one true love vs the many. In this case, Solas is choosing magic and elves vs his one true love and the rest of the people in Thedas. Extreme, I know. I make exception because Thedas right now is a shithole. I do not agree with maintaining the status quo.
That's the thing though. Even in the real world, some might express similar sentiments, think things were better before ________, but others, like Varric, talk about people building lives for themselves in an imperfect world. Varric himself has been spending time repairing the damage war did to Kirkwall. Varric has experienced some pretty terrible things. But he cares, he sees a world that others might call broken or not real, not worth anything, and see possibility.
It's in the banters between Varric and Solas about the man on the island. Solas' attitude is stubborn, 'all or nothing' and Varric's attitude is 'make do with what you have, build a life, even if it's meager'.
Most people would rather see the world improved than destroyed. Most people try to find what hope, joy, and opportunity they can in the world. And then there are those who'd toss it all out in drastic measures.
