Art break.

Modern AU Solas in a 3-piece suit by deedylovescake from the fic Yes, Fen'Harel:wub:

Pulchra Tenebris page 17. (It's that Solavellan comic set post-game but was made before the release of Trespasser.)

(Pulchra Tenebris Comic Masterpost for those interested in reading it from the beginning.)

Lavellan tells Solas she's pregnant. (That elf in the first panel with her is her older brother btw.)

Cute little art of Lavellan and Solas.

Solas and m!Lavellan kissing.

Trespasser Solas

Solas in his Hierophant outfit.

"Hot-blooded and cocky, always ready for a fight." Young Solas doing martial arts?

The Unending Wake Part 15: Solas, Cole, and Vir Lavellan.

Another artwork for The Unending Wake. (Now on AO3 btw.) Late art done for part 1 of the fic since the author didn't make any when she first started on it.

Some sketches of Garrett Hawke, Dorian, Solas, and the artist's OC.

Solas is very formal with his speech, educated. He uses words like presumably, precise...

This is true if used sparingly, but I just wanted to caution against overdoing it. I often see fics where he uses these big complex words in almost every sentence, and it makes him come across as a dry intellectual. Solas speaks in an educated way, true, but his speech is very poetic.

Take for example these exerpts from the first conversations at Haven. Even when you take out the iambic pentameter, notice how he uses simple words but speaks in a figurative way, and also how his words convey strong emotion:

I've journeyed deep into the Fade in ancient ruins and battlefield to see the dreams of lost civilizations. I've watched as hosts of spirits clash to reenact the bloody past of ancient wars both famous and forgotten.

Any building strong enough to withstand the rigors of time has a history. Every battlefield is steeped in death. Both attract spirits. They press against the Veil, weakening the barrier between our worlds.

Okay, here goes, I'm putting myself out there. As a new fanfic writer, when I see these kinds of critiques on work that is far better than my own it is rather intimidating. If her work can't hold against the criticism then why should I bother?

Because only that way we can improve, lethallin :) There's always going to be someone who hates, someone who loves. someone who cares for your work. There's also going to be a bunch of completely indifferent people.

That is the way of fanfic writer, I am afraid.

Ah, I seem to be in such a reflective mood today, lol.

But I'm... not telling any of this to Feynite? She doesn't want to see it. That's fine. I won't tell it to her.

So I'm... pretty confused by this...

  How so? I'm not commenting on the quality of anyone's writing but Feynite's, and even then, I'm trying to be fair and acknowledge what she does well (Which is quite a bit). May I only voice my criticism in a forum dedicated to it? The only one available is the comment section on LG itself, and Feynite doesn't want to see any in-depth criticism there. I'm trying to respect that.

If you'd like to take it to PM, then we can.

It seems I'm being assigned a sense of vitriol I don't really possess. I'm debating because I enjoy it. It's fun. I'm sorry if anyone here thinks it's a wasted effort and I'm getting caught up on the negative, but I just... truly enjoy discussion...

I am not on the forums 24/7, but from what I've seen, you mostly comment when you want to criticize something. I can see where you are coming from sometimes. Like I don't really like her characterization of Solas in Dread Wolf's Heart. But for Looking Glass, I think you're nitpicking and sometimes you seem like you miss the point of Lavellan's characterization. I also think you have an unrealistic expectation of characters/people in that you want them to be logical all the time. That's the vibe I am getting.

Just checking in from someone else's computer to gripe about the fact that my computer finally died permanently when I tried to uninstall the Rollback program that was causing all of the issues. The hard drive was wiped, and now we just need to find the Windows and Word discs and we should be able to get it running.

...been a wonderful week or so searching for them.  <_<

But hey, mooching off family's Xbox One to play Fallout 4 and getting even further behind in NaNoWriMo ain't so bad, all things considered.

And I got a job interview and got the job. Seasonal cashier! I'm moving up in the world!

Every writer is different, tastes differ. Some people attract audiences not merely due to the quality of their work but also for being in the right place at the right time, know the right people who share, and many other factors.

it sort of comes down to why are you writing and whether or not it's still enjoyable to you. Some people become very down because consistent comparisons to other people can be exhausting. It's possible to learn from others' techniques without feeling inferior. And if you're writing for recognition, maybe that's not always the most satisfying approach because fandoms can be fickle, as well as particular, and again, right place, right time, right theme, and that's before even the quality is of concern.

I have mostly been writing stuff that has, by its nature, a fraction of an audience. F/F stories often get less attention in general, then I'm writing about past events, with my PC and an original character, so having realistic expectations is also key. I'm grateful for anyone who takes the time to read and appreciate what I write but I write what I'm writing for personal challenge, skill building, and because I care. Some people do the same but they self-promote and have large networks to share to. Or they have the one or two right people in their networks to share in front of many and the audience grows. Word of mouth is a really powerful thing.

In essence, write for you, enjoy what you're doing. Bounce things off of us, since we're a generally easygoing group who want to help one another. If it stops being fun or satisfying, then don't. It says nothing about you in the end. But avoid comparisons. Learn from what you like and borrow.

Okay, here goes, I'm putting myself out there. As a new fanfic writer, when I see these kinds of critiques on work that is far better than my own it is rather intimidating. If her work can't hold against the criticism then why should I bother?

Well... for starters, this is my opinion. Just my opinion. You don't have to listen to it. If you think I'm irrational, demanding, confused, whatever - ignore me. My view's no more valid than yours, or anyone else's here. You are absolutely within your rights to discard everything I say, every criticism I bring up. I'm not the arbiter of anything, much less quality writing.

For two - there'll always be criticism. And there'll always be praise, too. No matter what it is, someone in the world loves it, and someone in the world hates it.

For three - because you should always bother. The only way you'll stop improving is if you stop trying. Even a creator who's a complete brat about criticism, who denies even the slightest bit of negativity, they're still getting better than someone who's just given up. It can be hard, when you feel like you're not so great at something, to keep going. It can be hard, to look at what other people have done, to feel it's so much better than yours. And it's so easy, to look at them and think they've always been that good. But they weren't. They sucked they first started, but they kept going. They bothered. You'll never get to their level, and you'll never improve beyond their level, if you stop trying.

Talent and skill don't fall into your lap. You achieve it. You strive for it. You have to always keep striving - and if anyone tells you that you shouldn't bother, tell 'em to go f*ck themselves, because at least you're trying.

Even if you are the best writer ever there will still be criticism. Also, I don't think Feynite just came out of the blue with her talents. She was probably rough at one point. If you read her blogs about how she writes, it is clear that she developed a process over time that works for her. It's not magic.

I learned long ago not to write for recognition, and I don't compare my work to others, because if I did I would have quit before I started! I was simply saying that if I felt intimidated as a writer seeing someones work picked apart so deeply, there are others that feel the same.

I can handle the critique, Drosophila edits my chapters!  And if something doesn't make sense she tells me. :D I'm not perfect, I'm not even great, but I'm having fun and so far those that are reading enjoy it. I'm writing because to not write would drive me crazy, and that's something coming from someone that fretted over every written essay, research paper, or short story she's had to write. ^_^

I write because I've always loved it. There was a long period of time when I didn't, and I constantly felt very empty. Now I don't.

I wrote a whole 110 words today for my NaNo! I am super awesome! :D I'm still 7K words behind where I should be  I've hit a block that I haven;t been able to push through the last 4 days. Maybe tomorrow....My own fault for juggling two stories, plus school. plus work! (thank goodness I only work full time January through April 15th!!)

Edit: And I completely forgot what I wanted to say!.... Congrats on the job, I hope your computer is up and running soon! I would be lost without my computer! (Online school and bookkeeping job outside of tax season)

Full time from January through April sounds nice. Ah, accounting/bookkeeping. I know someone whose mom is an accountant, and it gets rather busy but it is nice when the crunch ends.

I'm cautiously considering applying to a teaching program soon. It's one of those programs that lets you teach in underserved areas while also sending you for a paid for education MA and certification and paying a salary. Teaching would also be crunch time, but that summer vacation is so appealing, aside from teaching hitting a lot of my strengths. But it would be nice to have time to relax, write, and still get paid during that time.

Oh you writers and creative people who actually have something to show. I envy you.

... At this point I'd be happy if my current (be it fanart or whatever) status - at least when it comes to finished works - dropped to 0 from -78 -_-

Like... today is the day I've drawn -2 doodles! I could've drawn them today, but time was wasted on something else and I don't even know where and when...

Destructive perfectionism + procrastination = who invented that combo and how painfully can I kill them???

Tax season is brutal, it's 6 days a week 10-12 hour days from March 1st to April 15th. There are always those that think if they bring stuff to you a week before you can do a years worth of bookkeeping, and their stock portfolio you have enough time to file on time. Maybe if they were the ONLY person I was doing taxes for <_<

My personal favorites are the ones that call you the day a report is due and want it filed ASAP, yeah honey, get in line I have 50 clients that I do this for every quarter, what made you more important than any of them?

I couldn't write for days, then suddenly two things popped out of my brain. Creativity is a weird beast. I've also been alternating between feeling okay and feeling terrible, and had no confidence in my ability to write the thing I posted Saturday, so...I think the short version is everyone is hardest on themselves. <3

I'm always ever so slightly irritated by that tarrot card. I mean, she's always Dalish, right? And Dalish live in forests. You try wandering around half naked in a forest and see how long you last. I know its 'artistic' but come on! Imagine the bug bites! The branches snapping into her skin! I am pained just imagining it.

Also, you're off to a great start, FernRain, forgive the mini rant :)
