Galactic Filthy Baguette of Justice Wars

A Science Fiction Plot

A long, long time ago in a filthy, filthy galaxy...

After leaving the cocky planet Uranus, a group of vampires fly toward a distant speck. The speck gradually resolves into a dashing, space castle.

Civil war strikes the galaxy, which is ruled by Lord Dirthamen, an elfy sorcerer capable of torture and even murder.

Terrified, a naughty werebear known as Ellana Lavellan flees the Empire, with her protector, Solas Dread.

They head for Moonshine on the planet Venus. When they finally arrive, a fight breaks out. Dread uses his filthy Baguette of Justice to defend Ellana.

Dread and Werebear Ellana decide it's time to leave Venus and steal a go-cart to shoot their way out.

They encounter a tribe of gremlins. Dread is attacked and the werebear is captured by the gremlins and taken back to Moonshine.

Dread must fight to save Werebear Ellana but when he accidentally unearths a charming Salad Shooter, the entire future of the filthy, cocky galaxy is at stake.

Definitely more interested than one may initially assume, I'd say At least judging from people's reactions pre- and post- game release  

No awkward Fade-nerd, that one: "enjoyable side benefits", literally throwing himself at Lavellan after mildest of encouragements, being all smooth and confident when flirting - it doesn't strike me as a guy who's not interested, though I assume that how far that would go depends on a temperament of a romanced Inquisitor.

Hahahaha.....yeah. He can be uptight, but it seems more because he dislikes vulgarity, rather than that he dislikes sex. Someone who says they would not lay with you under false pretenses, has definitely been thinking about laying with you, even if the two of you haven't done the deed yet.

Yes.

I think that when it comes to love and sex, Solas takes these matters seriously. He values the beauty in many things and sharing himself in an intimate way with another person is not to be taken lightly.

Solas also seems like the type of person that would dislike the notion that sex can be used as a tool against people or as just another activity.

He wouldn't just go and have a casual dalliance, nor would he kiss and tell. When he was younger? Probably. But not now.

I wouldn't say that he's a complete prude, he just likes his personal affairs to be private.

Or as dawnstone put it "he dislikes vulgarity". (Hopefully I didn't misinterpret your meaning there )

On this note, I have to wonder: in Trespasser, Solas pretty much outright indicated that Lavellan and he had lain together. Why is it really that he is the only LI who didn't get a cutscene for it? Is it really just because he was a last minute LI option?

 

I know this subject has been gnawed to the bone, but now that Trespasser is out (where they clearly had more time and intention to put his romance in the forefront, to the point where I'm having trouble envisioning how I'm going to play through it not as a Solasmancer), I have to wonder about it again. Originally we were speculating that it was perhaps a design choice or that he is just so damn special (or I privately think because they really, really want to torment Solasmancers as much as is humanly possible for... 'artistic reasons'), but now I'm not so certain. And I feel just a little bit short-changed that I didn't get to glut myself on a more intimate cutscene. IF it was deliberate, I respect the fact (as we discussed way back when) that not every romance has to have a more explicit cutscene, because that highlights that this is not the point. Yet, when I get down to it, I just want more. Because Solas has an annoying tendency to run away. x_x I mean, it seems needlessly cruel to me that the one LI who leaves us heartbroken and wanting way more is the one who gives the least amount of content. (But the ones he does give...! *miserable swoon*)

Not at all, what I mean by vulgarity, is his reaction like when Sera goes after him for getting involved with Lavellan:

 

(If Inquisitor is in a relationship with Solas)

• Sera: So, you and the Lady Inquisitor. Interesting.
• Solas: Your interest is not my concern.
• Sera: That's all right, because I meant boring. The elf always takes the elf so that banging bits will mean something.
• Solas: It is not a topic for discussion.
• Sera: Oh, come on. Drop 'em and rebuild the empire. Phwoar!
• Inquisitor: Sera! No more!
• Sera: Hmph! Fine. Whatever.
• Solas: Don't concern yourself, vhenan. She is… apart from herself.

Or

• Inquisitor: (Laughter) You're ridiculous.
• Sera: Not me. It's him! And you.
• Solas: Only one of us is looking sad and foolish, Sera.

INT. SKYHOLD ROTUNDA - AFTERNOON

Thoughtful Inquisitor INQUISITOR NIRWEN LAVELLAN is arguing with caring Evanuris SOLAS . NIRWEN tries to hug SOLAS but he shakes her off.

NIRWEN
Please Solas, don't leave me. SOLAS
I'm sorry Nirwen, but I'm looking for somebody a bit more brave. Somebody who faces her fears head on, instead of running away. NIRWEN
I am such a person!

SOLAS frowns.

SOLAS
I'm sorry, Nirwen. I just don't feel excited by this relationship anymore.

SOLAS leaves.

NIRWEN sits down, looking defeated.

Moments later, old magic nerd SIR DORIAN PAVUS barges in looking flustered.

NIRWEN
Goodness, Dorian! Is everything okay? DORIAN
I'm afraid not. NIRWEN
What is it? Don't keep me in suspense... DORIAN
It's ... a demon ... I saw an evil demon tempt a bunch of Elvhen! NIRWEN
Defenseless Elvhen? DORIAN
Yes, defenseless Elvhen! NIRWEN

DORIAN fans himself and begins to wheeze.

NIRWEN

NIRWEN springs up and begins to run.

EXT. A ROAD - CONTINUOUS

NIRWEN rushes along the street, followed by DORIAN. They take a short cut through some back gardens, jumping fences along the way.

EXT. THE FADE - SHORTLY AFTER

DIN EVANURIS a mysterious demon terrorises two Elvhen.

NIRWEN, closely followed by DORIAN, rushes towards DIN, but suddenly stops in her tracks.

DORIAN
What is is? What's the matter? NIRWEN
That's not just any old demon, that's Din Evanuris! DORIAN
Who's Din Evanuris? NIRWEN
Who's Din Evanuris? Who's Din Evanuris? Only the most mysterious demon in the universe! DORIAN
Blinkin' knickers, Nirwen! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most mysterious demon in the universe! NIRWEN
You can say that again. DORIAN
Blinkin' knickers, Nirwen! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most mysterious demon in the universe! NIRWEN
I'm going to need staff, lots of staff.

Din turns and sees Nirwen and Dorian. He grins an evil grin.

DIN
Nirwen Lavellan, we meet again. DORIAN
You've met? NIRWEN
Yes. It was a long, long time ago...

EXT. A PARK - BACK IN TIME

A young NIRWEN is sitting in a park listening to some polka music, when suddenly a dark shadow casts over her.

She looks up and sees DIN. She takes off her headphones.

DIN
Would you like some frilly cake?

NIRWEN's eyes light up, but then he studies DIN more closely, and looks uneasy.

NIRWEN
I don't know, you look kind of mysterious. DIN
Me? No. I'm not mysterious. I'm the least mysterious demon in the world. NIRWEN
Wait, you're a demon?

NIRWEN runs away, screaming.

EXT. THE FADE - PRESENT DAY

DIN
You were a coward then, and you are a coward now. DORIAN
(To NIRWEN) You ran away? NIRWEN
(To DORIAN) I was a young child. What was I supposed to do?

NIRWEN turns to DIN.

NIRWEN
I may have run away from you then, but I won't run away this time!

NIRWEN runs away.

She turns back and shouts.

NIRWEN
I mean, I am running away, but I'll be back - with staff. DIN
I'm not scared of you. NIRWEN
You should be.

EXT. CRESTWOOD - LATER THAT DAY

NIRWEN and DORIAN walk around searching for something.

NIRWEN
I feel sure I left my staff somewhere around here. DORIAN
Are you sure? It does seem like an odd place to keep deadly staff. NIRWEN
You know nothing Dorian Pavus. DORIAN
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think they're here.

Suddenly, DIN appears, holding a pair of staff.

DIN
Looking for something? DORIAN
Crikey, Nirwen, he's got your staff. NIRWEN
Tell me something I don't already know! DORIAN
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km. NIRWEN
I know that already! DORIAN
I love butts. DIN
(appalled) Dude!

While DIN is looking at DORIAN with disgust, NIRWEN lunges forward and grabs her deadly staff. He wields them, triumphantly.

NIRWEN
Prepare to die, you mysterious beet! DIN
No please! All I did was tempt a bunch of Elvhen!

SOLAS enters, unseen by any of the others.

NIRWEN
I cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour! Those Elvhen were defenceless! Well now they have a defender - and that's me! Nirwen Lavellan defender of innocent Elvhen. DIN
Don't hurt me! Please! NIRWEN
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't use these staff on you right away! DIN
Because Nirwen, I am your father.

NIRWEN looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects herself.

NIRWEN
No you're not! DIN
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.

DIN tries to grab the staff but NIRWEN dodges out of the way.

NIRWEN
Who's the daddy now? Huh? Huh?

Unexpectedly, DIN slumps to the ground.

DORIAN
Did he just faint? NIRWEN
I think so. Well that's disappointing. I was rather hoping for a more dramatic conclusion, involving my deadly staff.

NIRWEN crouches over DIN's body.

DORIAN
Be careful, Nirwen. It could be a trick. NIRWEN
No, it's not a trick. It appears that... It would seem... Din Evanuris is dead! NIRWEN
What? NIRWEN
Yes, it appears that I scared him to death.

DORIAN claps his hands.

DORIAN
So your staff did save the day, after all.

SOLAS steps forward.

SOLAS
Is it true? Did you kill the mysterious demon? NIRWEN
Solas how long have you been...?

SOLAS puts his arm around NIRWEN.

SOLAS
Long enough. NIRWEN
Then you saw it for yourself. I killed Din Evanuris. SOLAS
Then the Elvhen are safe? NIRWEN
It does seem that way!

A crowd of vulnerable Elvhen enter, looking relived.

SOLAS
You are their hero.

The Elvhen bow to NIRWEN.

NIRWEN
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Din Evanuris will never tempt Elvhen ever again, is enough for me. SOLAS
You are humble as well as brave!

One of the Elvhen passes NIRWEN an elven orb

SOLAS
I think they want you to have it, as a symbol of their gratitude. NIRWEN
I couldn't possibly.

Pause.

NIRWEN
Well, if you insist.

NIRWEN takes the orb.

NIRWEN
Thank you.

The Elvhen bow their heads once more, and leave.

NIRWEN turns to SOLAS.

NIRWEN
Does this mean you want me back? SOLAS
Oh, Nirwen, of course I want you back!

NIRWEN smiles for a few seconds, but then looks defiant.

NIRWEN
Well you can't have me. SOLAS
WHAT? NIRWEN
You had no faith in me. You had to see my scare a demon to death before you would believe in me. I don't want a lover like that. SOLAS
But... NIRWEN
Please leave. I want to spend time with the one person who stayed with me through thick and thin - my best friend, Dorian.

DORIAN grins.

SOLAS
But... DORIAN
You heard the lady. Now be off with you. Skidaddle! Shoo! SOLAS
Nirwen? NIRWEN
I'm sorry Solas, but I think you should skidaddle.

SOLAS leaves.

DORIAN turns to NIRWEN.

DORIAN
Did you mean that? You know ... that I'm your best friend? NIRWEN
Of course you are!

The two walk off arm in arm.

Suddenly DORIAN stops.

DORIAN
When I said I love butts, you know I was just trying to distract the demon don't you?

That touches another aspect of Solas which I think is important - when he says something or engages in something, he means it. Not to a point that he's dead serious about everything, but you can tell that he's not wasting much time on things he doesn't mean to say or do. He's all about meaningful interactions and... well... memorable moments (likely one of reasons he drags Lavellan all the way to Crestwood ;D),

 

Which, I assume, is also why he likely avoids lying.

And, well, Solas withheld a lot of very important things, not the least of which, is that he is basically Dalish Satan, has spies in your organization, gave Cory the Orb, and wants to tear down the Veil - quite probably destroying the world as you know it, and killing countless innocent people in the chaos.

 

It would have brought up a lot of arguments about consent and power imbalances that the devs probably wanted to dodge if at all possible. Solas' character gets dark enough by the end.

 

While you technically have more power over him in the game, initially, he is doing things behind the scenes you can't even imagine and have no reason to suspect, until it's much too late.

 

So yeah, I can see where some players might have issues with how much power he actually has, and what he allowed you to believe, and feel very betrayed, hurt and used, even though Solas is open and adamant that he truly loves a romanced Lavellan.

But I have to wonder, still, how that decision was made. I mean, the best way to 'hide in plain sight' is to have Solas act completely normal in all ways, only slipping up here and there just enough to let us know that there's more to him than meets the eye. And I have to wonder about that comment being able to be 'interpreted either way' just in case some people were uncomfortable... it seems strange to me in a game where any and all successful romances with other characters does culminate in some sort of intimate scene, why stop with just one? Or why leave just one out? Isn't that a little... obvious? Why be concerned with the delicate feelings of one particular LI fan group when all the rest (heck, all the rest in all three installments of DA) get it whether they like it or not? (Or are they just tiptoeing on eggshells around us because they know they've tormented us so much already... in which case I'd still say why choose omission rather than inclusion, when some - like me - were really, really desperate to get even a single line more out of him? We're meant to believe their relationship is deep and loving, but so much of that is behind the scenes.)

 

Plus, they've already been really brutal with us with the emotional jerking around. Adding physical entanglements to the breakup wouldn't really be that much more of a slap in the face than it already is, I mean that stuff is heavy. But considering the level of love and interest he garners, it would make sense to me to mollify fans as much as possible with 'beautiful while it lasted', juicy details. Personally, I want to know that I hold a piece of his heart that no one else does on all levels.

 

I get your argument about consent and power imbalances, and I agree. But if I were on the dev team, I'd point out that IRL relationships come and go like a whirlwind, a lot of the time you don't even get a chance to learn all the truths about a person and then suddenly the relationship is over; you actually cannot be entirely honest with your LI's, but I get it: Solas is actively hiding a very, very important part of himself. OK. But does that make their relations a 'violation'? You fell in love with each other for crying out loud, and yes, betrayals do happen. But you did go into the relationship willingly. If I found out such an important secret, I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that they were deliberately trying to trick me or something like that.

 

This might be a stretch, but I remember reading an article about the devs putting a stop to some 'rape scene' that they didn't realize was that until someone on the team pointed it out - could this have been that scene? Because Solas is Fen'Harel and thus the imbalance between them and his lies by omission are so colossal that players might feel violated if Solas had a normal sex scene?

 

If so, I feel vaguely insulted. I'm not a porcelain doll, my character chose to be in that relationship and she had a choice to end it, too. I knew he was shifty from the start, and though I didn't know the magnitude of it, that was part of what attracted me to him in the first place. IRL you take responsibility for both your good and bad judgement calls and relationships are a veritable minefield of bad judgements; I had relationships that make me shudder in horror to remember them and I wonder what the hell I was thinking; I'd feel violated if the unnamed individuals would want to press on and rekindle the relationship (pretty much even as an innocent suggestion - yes, it was that bad), but I also know that it was my reckless decision to get into it in the first place and I did go along with it at the time.

 

Let's not even mention the fact that ancient, immortal elves and people referred to as gods by your people for centuries upon centuries is... quite appealing to me. I feel like a badass Persephone who has Stockholm Syndrome before I even realized what the actual frak is going on, to me that's empowering in a strange way (that I won't explain in minute detail because this is already way too long again). If we focus on the fact that not everyone agrees, well - not everyone likes any of the other romances, either. Come on! Bull betrays you hideously, I won't even mention Blackwall and I could go on. Is it because Solas is an antagonist? To me, that's like a freaking dream come true. Which is why I love Solas way more than is healthy.

 

*sniff* Witcher 3 soundtrack is not exactly helping. It's a different freaking game and it affects me exactly the same way.
