Well, technically the same thing happens to Inky, only light falls on a different side

In any case - this lighting is the reason why many people think that they did something to improve his face - no, it's just a fancy shadow play that we haven't seen much in the base game; it pulls all his sharp features out, giving him more of an angular, but also mysterious, if not a bit intimidating... I mean, aside from all the 'half face in shadow, half face in light' rather obvious symbolism
