As for the reason, I don't need any. People do have preferences after all. It would be nice to hear why he was designed that way eventually, but it's not really important at this point.

I don't think he's racist. I think it'll be more the fact he sees himself doing something very specific with his life and that just doesn't mean marrying the Inquisitor.
But it is sad they introduced race-gating.
I don't think it adds much to the game.

It's sad how so much enthusiasm for Solas has died. I know everyone has taken the elven babies story and ran it into the ground...and also the "dats racist!" accusations that were flying, but I am no wavering in the love of Solas.
I'm sorry to see this thread losing so many awesome people.
For myself, I still think he'll be an utterly fascinating character. I still want to hear his opinions on everything. But as a love interest? Yeah, I'm interested in why he's gated but I don't care about the actual romance anymore.

On my end, I'm intrigued by him as a guy who believes the Fade isn't evil.
My Mage Hawke wanted to talk about Blood Magic with Merril all the time but she preferred talking about kittens.
Maybe this will go over better.

I'm hoping for an epic friendship storyline. There was a fair amount of talk that more work was put into the friendships, so I'm hoping that'll make up for things.

Also, being adaptable in the characters we play helps. If I find a character interesting and want to play their romance, I'll play someone who fits, personally I can play anything but m/m.

So who is going to pull this thing out again just for Solas?
It's been... so long since I saw an unmodded Dalish armour *pokes it with a stick*
On a Solas note, I'm slightly worried his romance turns to be connected to something super spoilery, like Anders but with less mass murder, because Solas is unlikely to be my first romance (in fact, he'll probably be third or fifth at this rate.) I don't want to find out something terrible about him on my first playthrough and be unable to do a romance with him because of it!

Solas may be the determing factor if I become a Rift Mage or not.

I am sad about that too. But we have a couple of months for interest in him to build back up again.
I suppose one upside to him being so picky is he won't hook up with anyone else when I romance Cullen. I can get possessive of my pixelated men. I wouldn't mind Cullen and Cassandra getting together though on my first run.
I also felt bad when I had Morrigan take Alistair's virginity since he hated her so much. ![]()

If each companion gets one of those specialties, I think that is his. I read something somewhere about us being able to respec them, but I don't know if that's true for sure.

But really, I'll probably just have to have him be bestest bros with my first Quizzy, since I still intend to roll a male elf first. That way I can also see if this 'super story related' reasoning is something I'm going to be okay with

People, may I mention that Solas' most interesting aspects are unrelated to romance? I fail to see why this race-gating is more than a minor annoyance for those who have an interest in him as a character in the first place. My main Inquisitor will still find him fascinating and I'm hoping for a friendship.
Also, being adaptable in the characters we play helps. If I find a character interesting and want to play their romance, I'll play someone who fits, personally I can play anything but m/m.
It hasn't been a full two days yet. Let people have the time they need to deal with their disappointment. I doubt romance is the only reason people were interested but it's still disappointing to a lot of people that this is the way things are.

This is basically how I feel. I'm interested in Solas as a character still and I'm still interested in whether there's any possibility these Ancient Elf theories or theories about ties to Felassen could pan out. Solas has always seemed like one of the more interesting characters to me.
But as for the romance? No offense to anyone, but I don't really care how "awesome" the story reasons are for him to be incredibly gated. It doesn't make me feel any better if I end up getting the least romance options.. again.. which seems likely. I would have rather they wrote some "awesome" story reasons why the distribution could actually be balanced. These "awesome" story reasons only benefit people that like playing straight characters.. again.

I feel a bit sad for not having a lot of time to participate in the thread lately, but I still lurk around, silently liking all the things.
Forever watching.
Ahem.
Even on playthroughs where I don't roll a Solas-loving female elf, I think it's going to be pretty hard to keep him out of my party. I just want to hear what he says about everything and everyone all the time.

I don't know, was just thinking about the Dalish First who is one of the MP characters. Neria, I think her name is? Anyway, there are a couple of hypotheticals that have been floated around about his need to romance a female elf as something having to do with his personal story arc...if that's true, then how would his personal story play out in the absence of a female Lavellan? Would an outside character get pulled in so it can be completed?
(this is all conjecture born from ideas involving Ancient Elves and Arlathan and that sort of thing- big stuff that could possibly be hardcoded into his companion story)
(I tend to like the idea that his "super story reasons" are really big because I want as much Solas content as I can get, regardless of who I play as)

This isn't necessarily true. I mean how many people will play elven females? I think that Solas was made available to elf women for balance reasons. Why he isn't also available to elf men, I'm not sure, other than the writers wanted him to be straight.
Numbers aren't everything--if Cullen turns out to be gated, and originally Iron Bull was gated, it might mean that those playing elven women would be left without an option. In that case, it's not so much about straight women having more options as it is making sure a certain race/gender combination still gets the same options as others have. I'm kind of hoping it's a reason like that, rather than just gay guys and lesbian ladies being left out again. If Dorian were, for instance, gated to humans only, would you not have hoped that another LI would be made available for those who weren't playing humans?
What I'm saying is just because there are more people to choose from, doesn't mean that necessarily makes more options for a given group. For female characters on the whole, that might be true, but not for characters of certain specific race/class combinations, at least until Iron Bull was made available to all. Maybe if Epler hadn't worked so hard on Iron Bull, Solas would be the ONLY option available if one wanted to play a straight elf woman, if that makes sense. So even though there would be an extra option for straight female characters (who don't necessarily get played by straight female players), no one was actually getting any extra options. If that makes sense. I'm tired and should already be in bed.
The only other reason beyond others being race-gated against elves that I can think of to have added Solas as a romance at all is simply for roleplaying purposes. It seems to me he most likely wasn't originally planned to be a romance at all, until the other races were added in. Since some people would want to play an elf/elf romance as a Dalish, and for some story reason or another Solas isn't into non-elves, they decided to make him available. By that time, Sera had already most likely been pegged down as a lesbian romance option. As to why they'd write Solas as straight rather than bi... I really don't know, unless Blackwall is available and bisexual. I still won't be too surprised if VIvienne is the final romance, but I'm kind of expecting Blackwall.
The extreme restriction may also mean that Solas's romance content is minimal compared to other characters', even if it's interesting. I hope that's not the case, but if it is... hopefully that will ease the sting some?
Long story short, I don't think the LGBT community was intentionally slighted, not with Solas being as heavily restricted as he is. Considering how many people are likely to play elf ladies, he almost may as well not have been an option at all. I'm stiill sad for you - I really wish the romances had been more balanced. But, again, I'm hoping it turns out that they still are.

I hope you'll share screenshots. Hopefully he's as adorable as your art of him.
I need to plan my elf Inquisitor's appearance. I do lean toward red hair, probably short but maybe she'd have a long braid. Redheads are normally pale in real life, so she'll probably be ghostly white and have freckles. I'm hoping I can play her relatively cheerful, you know, relatively considering the world is apparently ending around her.
Gurl you're makin' me blush
If no one else starts a "everybody spam all your inquisitors here" thread when the game comes out then I will start it myself XD I want to see what kind of people all the forumites I've come to know will play as!

I went from long ponytail to ^^that^^ haircut a week or so ago and it feels AMAZING, though now that I know how it feels I might have to find Solas a nice knit hat for snowy adventures.

It's sad and we could be in a lull for a while the disappointment settles in. I'm interested to see what happens to this thread once we actually meet Solas. Will we return to a land of unicorns and happiness or will people duke it out over wildly different opinions of his character?

I don't consider balancing race to be at all as important as balancing gender/sexuality and Gaider had said he felt the same, which is why I really don't understand what happened. If Blackwall is an option (I'm expecting hetero Vivienne), then it changes the outcome, but I'm still very disappointed that they didn't choose to allocate resources in a way that would give balance. There's no way to fix it now, though, so I guess I can just hope that they'll do things differently next time. Although, I'll be honest, I don't have much hope at this point.

One thing I rarely see mentioned is that it might have been unworkable to do 4 bi LIs - sure we had that in DA2 but there were only 4 and we could only play human. Adding a 7th LI like Solas meant one more set of scenes while adding an ungated bi LI would mean 8 more sets.

Well I like to think that his personal story arc isn't about romancing anyone. The female elf would just be the only person who he'd want to go through it with him as a partner. I don't think people would take it well if getting an elf woman pregnant really is the only reason he wants us/someone else. But you could be right. They sort of did that with Morrigan already.

I agree with you. Plus, I feel like a lot of posts/comments about it being awesome that Solas is gated because it makes him more realistic/less fanservicey seem to not realize that a. claims like that essentially erases the very real existence of any sexuality that isn't heterosexuality and b. they're implying that they see the GLBT representation we do have in the game as pacification devices for squeaky wheel gamers.
I mean, I wholly understand the fact that not everyone is gay or bi or pan or even interested in sex at all! But, at the same time, it's like Mort says- when all this awesome "realism" and "epic BW storytelling" is applied to special cases like Solas, it tends to disproportionately serve people who already get more.

Honestly, seeing posts about how his strict gates will likely make him SUPER SPECIAL and AWESOME as a romance just make me feel like crap. It's very likely true. When they have straight characters, they're usually the most important ones, the most plot heavy ones. Morrigan and Alistair were, Cassandra most likely will be. It's just as likely true that Solas has some SUPER SPECIAL, plot relevant story and, again, it's made just for you, straight people!
This is why I really wish they would just stick with all bi. I see it as the only way I'm ever not going to get screwed. I actually really got behind the set sexualities for a while, but I realize now I was just being naive. Set sexualities are always going to mean extra characters and important characters are for straight people.

Mainly because I feel somewhat responsible. ("Why me?")
So I had to make this. It sums up my initial reaction, and I think the entire reaction of Solas fans, worldwide.
