Ginger Solas is basically why I want Solavellan kids, despite how implausible that scenario is. My Lavellan and Solas would have the cutest ginger elf babies :P

Death as redemption really only works in limited situations, and it should never be used as an easy way out, don't-speak-ill-of-the-dead, at least he died saving someone vomit trope. If Solas has to give up his life to, say, destroy the Evanuris or the blight or something like that, you can't call that redemption either. It's just doing what is necessary. So how then would death equal redemption in his case any more than living and moving forward in a new world and helping that grow and overcome whatever is holding it back? What is he even being "redeemed" from? He screwed up with the conclave, but we killed as many people through the game. Whatever he did with the Veil turned out to have grave consequences he didn't foresee, so demanding he make up for that by dying is ridiculous. If what he said is true, something had to be done and he was trying to help everyone by doing it. There's bound to be more to the story that we'll still learn, but as it stands? Yeah, no.

Thom's redemption arc worked so well because he chose to finally set aside the mantle of a dead man and live his life as himself and for the benefit of others. He learned what it meant to do good, rather than just going through the motions. And while I expect the story will be well done if Solas must die for whatever reason, I refuse to believe it's going to be the automatic and expected outcome. Because, like... for what? It would just cheapen the whole deal if that is all we are left with.

This is my thinking as well. Death is too easy. It's wasted when there is so much he can do to 'fix' things. Until I have more of the story I'm holding out hope that the man is not the stupid apocalyptic monster he's being seen as.

I just think that so many people are convinced the only way forward regarding Solas is inevitably tragic or even apart from the women he loves, and I'm not giving up on the hope that Trespasser left me with. On several levels. That was what I came away with...a sense of solid hope.

I guess I am the on-duty Team Optimism representative this morning. :)

Waving mine (Team Optimism flag) right beside you. Always hold on to hope. (but then I might be a spirit of hope irl)

He can absolutely be that and I'll still respect him as an antagonist character. He's not doing what he is doing to be evil or to gain power or the usual reasons one expects of a villain. I'm not sure what we can do to prove him wrong or show him a different way, but that question is what gets answered in the next game, right?

But even if he does go all out ready to destroy it all antagonist, I STILL don't think death would or should be the first and best answer. I guess people who want an easy story or a quick dose of hero ego save-the-day adrenaline would like it, but it would have to be incredibly well crafted as part of the story for me to do more than just sigh.

And I just caught up to your responses as well. You actually read through all our convoluted bullsh*t? And understood it? That's... impressive. And kinda crazy.

But... you summed it up pretty well. Though, I wouldn't say we're saying the same thing. Our viewpoints on what motivates Solas are pretty different. But that's something we really can't know for sure anyway, so the argument is kinda pointless. You're right about that.

Don't know how I got caught up in this debate for so long. Initially, I was just trying to understand what she was talking about. But her examples didn't make sense to me (for the reasons that you mentioned) so I kept responding to try and understand. Turns out we were just going around in circles, huh?

Thanks for reading. Why would you do that to yourself, though? The others just ignore us, as they should.

Actually, I've been following the discussion, too. Not getting in the middle of it, though, I'm already all too familiar with stepping in a semantic pit of vipers. :P

It's the glasses.  And the blushing.  And the dorky smile.

I wish I could have given him ratty old flip-flops, though.  He has to wear shoes of some kind in the grad AU; you're just asking for tetanus walking around a modern setting barefoot.  But that doesn't mean he has to wear decent shoes :P

My personal HC for modern Solas is that he wears one of those shoes that have all 5 toes and imitate bare feet.

I have a friend who wears those things.  They look so weird.  Maybe it's because his are this dark green color, but they make his toes look like clothy tentacles

Haha. Maybe you won't be able to tell. Maybe they'll take after dad and you'll get all eggs... even the girls. Baldness of this caliber is pretty dominant.

Yes! He's so magically gifted, and knows so much about... everything. Killing him would be like burning down a museum or a library. And you know me, I'm all about getting me some of that book learning. There is so much good he can still do with his powers and knowledge. You guys are right that death doesn't have to be the only path towards redemption for him.

And storywise, he's such a significant and controversial figure in history. His actions helped shape the current world as we know it today. Kinda too important a character to die, imo. The Dread Wolf is everywhere. They set him up in Dalish lore to be this devious, scary god... then we discover those legends only contained half truths of half truths. Doesn't make sense that they would just kill him off so cheaply. What a waste that would be!

And no way is some character player going to be able to off him (even though quite a few think they'll get that option). Look what he can do... with just his eyes!

Actually, I've been following the discussion, too. Not getting in the middle of it, though, I'm already all too familiar with stepping in a semantic pit of vipers. :P

So the line was: "Your hand hurts. A heartbeat. Not yours. Hammering the beat of a song in its final verse. I'm sorry." ?

I don't see any clear relation to Solas dying.

Hand hurts - a heartbeat. But a heartbeat is a sign of life not of the ending of it. I do see how "in its final verse" might indicate dying, but not necessarily so. It might also refer to somebody's actions/decisions. Like the heartbeat reflecting the own determination and "its final verse" indicating that this person finally decided what to do and has dedicated him/herself entirely to a particular goal no matter the cost; i.e., no searching or hesitation anymore but a strong determination, constant and adamant like a heartbeat. (Ignoring how a heartbeat could, of course, be stopped...)

And "I'm sorry"... that only works for a romanced Lavellan. If we get this banter always it would be strange and not make any sense for all those playthroughs with a rival or at least not romanced Solas.

*snip*

I had to laugh so hard at this. That's just ridiculous. That's like apes in a zoo. "Ah look, the mating season is coming, we must organize some female for Teffo". I mean... sure... somebody who's already shown to make bad decisions that got her clan killed might actually consider this option... but for the clan it might actually be better such a person wouldn't reproduce.

Besides, I don't see much of a chance of survival for a clan consisting of offspring of only two available people. Leaves us with few options. The children would need to breed with their parents and each other for lack of other genetic material. In no time we'd be left with people who'd be intellectually challenged by a cucumber and, most likely, get theirselves exterminated anyway.

*more snip*

Yes, all Cole's banters are ambiguous. I think "I'm sorry" can be interpreted in a number of ways, too.  Yes, absolutely with a romanced Lavellan, Cole might be saying he's sorry that she is going to lose her love. For friends it can be "Sorry that you're going to lose your friend." For rivals it can be "Sorry that I'm blurting out this weird thing (or stating the obvious about your hand hurting - of course you know it hurts!) when you are obviously trying to get to the bottom of this Qunari trouble."   ;)

And laugh - that's your prerogative. :) But how else do you propose preserving a specific bloodline if it's nearly wiped out? It's not such a different concept from Tevinter selectively breeding for magical ability. If you value the Lavellan bloodline and want it to continue, you need to procreate. And having children with someone you don't love because you perceive a larger purpose to it is what happens in both Tevinter and Orlais - Tevinter to produce more powerful mages, and Orlais to solidify political alliances.  I don't feel it's weird for Dalish elves to do the same for the perpetuation of their clans.

Considering that, out of the tree of 7 war table operations concerning Clan Lavellan, only 1 outcome results in Clan Lavellan being safe, while 1 results in a few casualties, and 6 result in the clan being wiped out, the odds are stacked against the Dalish Inquisitor. Many of the decisions seemed reasonable given the information we were given. So I don't think it's a problem of the Inquisitor having poor judgment, but rather that, being part of a marginalized culture, she just can't win in most situations.

I agree - I never thought of it Solas related but instead that the Inquisitor is dying - and we know the anchor is killing her. For me the heartbeat is a sign of the connection between the orb which might have been taken from the Titans or more specifically from the Titans heart and the anchor which was given to the Inqusitor by the orb. So as if the anchor has a heartbeat and the final verse is what the Inquisitor is going to kill.

Besides, Solas seems ok during Trespasser - we don't even know if he expects himself to die or if his journey of death means everyone is dying and with him something else might happening, but it is surely nothing good because he says himself that he doesn't want Lavellan to see what he will become.

During the stinger at the end of the game, Solas tells Mythal that it was his mistake and he should pay for it... but the people need him. Given that Mythal doesn't argue, I'm guessing he means that quite literally. That whatever he intends to do, he not only needs power to do it, but it has to be him. Either no one else is capable or some arbitrary magical mumbo jumbo'll stop them but not Solas.

Either way, I don't think simply allying with someone would be an option.

I didn't thought about that, thank you that makes sense.

That the clan is wiped out seemed to me more that the enemy was determined to hit her hard because she was an elf. We are talking Tevinter Extremists, extremist that want to rebuild the Imperium to it's former glory. That an elf is standing in their way has to gall them more than any other would.

They are also relying on three advisers that are supposed to understand their enemy and how to deal with them. The deck is stacked against a Lavellen, but she should be able to rely on better advice from her advisers. I saw the loss of the clan more as a reflection on the War Counsel than on Lavellan. She may not know the Game, but that didn't mean she /he was stupid.
