Yeah...I love that crazy elf, but I would never go near him IRL. I'd still ogle him though
I think thus far, Alistair is the only character whom I've romanced in a game, and would date IRL. Most of them are far too nuts to even consider.
Yeah, Alistair's pretty much someone I'd go for IRL (and maybe even Kaidan). As much as I love Solas, he'd probably scare me a bit IRL (but ooooh the temptation

DA2 was the worst in this aspect, in a way of speaking. The only LI without major issues was Isabela. Everyone else was a mess in one way or another.
Isabela had normal people issues (trust, emotional intimacy). And half the time I don't even remember that, because everyone else had such insane video game character issues
Izzy looks downright normal next to the likes of Anders and Fenris.
DA:I was generally an improvement. Not that the characters didn't have their hang-ups and hurdles, but IMO the crazier issues pretty much got condensed into Solas ![]()

Alistair and Liara for me. Liara admits that she's snoopy, but that's a thing that can be worked through.

I seem to be the odd one out who never considers video game characters as people I'd be interested in or date IRL. I always view them through the lens of my character, and while that can lead to some pretty interesting headcanons it just would never involve me. Ever.
Except for Bao-Dur from KotOR2. I would totally marry him and have a happy domestic life with the jerk and I'm still not entirely sure why. Possibly because he comes across as someone who is secure in himself and sincere with his respect, and while he does have baggage due to his role in the war it doesn't completely destroy or define the person he is. That says well of him.
So you all go on and enjoy Alistair. I'll be over here with the bald alien with horns on his head. I embrace my weird.

Yeah, Alistair's pretty much someone I'd go for IRL (and maybe even Kaidan).
Kaidan is a character who took years for me to appreciate. He was too much of a pushover at first, and I loathed Carth Onasi so that biased me against him. But I liked him better after seeing him interact with a Renegade Shepard; he definitely shows more snark and backbone if he's challenged on his beliefs. And he grows up so well by ME3
I'd date ME3 Kaidan in a heartbeat, though I never romanced him in-game.

Oooh, I forgot about Bao-Dur. It's been a while since KOTOR 2, but he was winsauce. He got friendzoned pretty hard in my playthrough for Atton Rand, but IRL, I'd hang out with Bao-Dur and stay miles away from Atton ![]()

The odd thing about Mass Effect, was that when I played, my Shepard was a hotbed of baggage and trust issues and a personality to start that was very different from me. I wound up relating to Liara a lot, and that was one lens through which I appreciated my Shepard and her path more. I created a lesbian Shepard too, and at the time, I wasn't certain about my own sexuality, and thus I wasn't looking at Liara through a 'me' lens, and yet I came to the same conclusion as I had with Alistair - 'if this was a real person, I'd definitely be interested'. Thus, these experiences were some of what helped me clarify things to myself.
As for Bao-Dur, he was one of the characters I really liked in that game, which I didn't like much. But Bao-Dur stands out. As you said, he carries some real baggage and pain, but he is so sincere, and his voice is so gentle, and he's caring, and thoughtful. I really did like their friendship and was kind of sad I didn't get to use him as much.

I feel the same way, I mean I love Fenris to bits but he has quite a lot of issues... in real life I would sadly probably be wary of him. ![]()
And Solas... well, there's the age difference of course, but also the whole apocalyptic thing... can't say I usually approve of such tendencies. ![]()
Alistair is someone I would date in a heartbeat; he is just so adorkable, kinda like Garrus minus the swag. ![]()
Why can't those two be real???

The thing with Solas is that he'd likely never exist IRL - there are some IRL substitutes that would probably fit what Solas is going through, but never really to the extreme of "thousands-year old entity who was forced to watch his entire civilization fall and had his hand in destroying it - and if he won't do anything now, whatever remained of his people will be gone forever". Given the existence of that extreme in his life, Solas is holding up quite well, so I can only imagine that he'd be doing much better IRL and... probably wouldn't really differ much from any regular smartass, I guess ![]()
Whether I'd be able to stand him or not... eh, dunno. Like Uirebhiril I don't really imagine any characters "for me", but mostly imagine how my characters would react to them in a given story or setting.
Anyway - I see the previous discussion went further after I've withdrawn to bed - I was supposed to address it yesterday, but I couldn't really come up with anything coherent with the headache I was sporting
Still not entirely gone, so I'm just grumpy now. Anyway - the thread has moved on, so I'll just leave it at that.

I loved Kaidan from the start. Though not the ninjamance.
I also loved Carth, and Raphael Sbarge is totally sweet to fans. Kaidan never came across as a pushover. He's kind and compassionate, and he's a strong believer in justice but even though he's a super powerful biotic and a good soldier, it's that heart and sense of doing the right thing that always come through. He cares a lot. I think people are way too quick to call him 'boring' and drag over their Carth hate.
Kaidan is also human in a sea of alien and enhanced badassery, and I think that makes people overlook/underappreciate him.
I think everyone by now should know the types of characters I tend to like. Basically just find the dorky, sincere, caring, empathetic, and nice character and you've probably found someone I like a lot. ![]()

IRL I'd go for Cullen or Josephine. Solas would immediately flash a sign that says, "Trouble!" and I would avoid him at all cost. My much younger self might've given in to the temptation.
But, tbh, I'm not even sure I'm his type. I don’t have that kind of patience.
I have the patience. I'm super, super open-minded within reason, and I have a strong curiosity streak that I think would work well with Solas. But I'm inquisitive due to that curiosity, and if it really felt like there were red flags and inconsistencies, and a lack of information, I wouldn't be able to overlook it. I'm also pretty intuitive and use contextual clues well. The red flags would be there.

Alistair yes. Cullen would be realistic as well.
And.....I have an ongoing debate in my head on whether or not Zevran would be realistic.
I mean.........
Yep.
Er, no?
The fact I am willing to consider it is probably not good.
But it could be.
Like I said, ongoing debate. Leaning towards yes. Probably not good.

Ahh yes, the voice. Thanks. This has made me decide to dig out the game and give it a play later. Because yes. The voice. The gentle. Sigh.
My Exile just couldn't take Atton seriously. It was like, yeah, you're such a bad boy, etc. etc. Now go fly the goddamn ship, we got things to do. Meanwhile I seem to vaguely recall another "I killed someone I loved" backstory to Atton and that just makes me nod knowingly and continue to sit in the Zabrak corner.

That's true. And there are plenty of other video game characters who are extreme enough where no IRL substitutes really fit them. But even without his baggage, there are elements of Solas's personality that would drive me a little nuts. The know-it-all superiority, for starters. It's fun in a fictional character, but I find it an obnoxious trait IRL. We'd be friends, but I wouldn't date him ![]()

I adore Kaidan, it just took a while. I like characters who are willing to stand up to the PC, whether I agree with them or not. It makes them feel more like real people to me, and less like digital yes-men. I feel like I never got that element of Kaidan's character playing Paragade FemShep, because he just agreed with everything I said and tried to ninjamance me
It took ticking Kaidan off with Renegade Shep for me to really appreciate his depth as a character. Oh the irony ![]()
That said, the traits I like in fictional characters (snarky, complicated, challenging) and in IRL people (kind, sincere, easygoing) are not mutually exclusive. Garrus ticks all those boxes, which is probably why I adore him so much ![]()

Just double checking with you guys. I rerolled my Solasmancer because i was unhappy that she looked like a distant relative of one of my earlier characters and wanted her to be a bit more unique (She just got to skyhold and the kiss they had in the fade looked like a really fun one imho).
I decided to play her as super Elfy and will probably still have her drink from the well.
I called her Nehn - is that an appropriate name for a Dalish? Do they give their children 'noun' names?
I think you can look that up on dragonagewikia actually, under elvhen/elven langues or something... I think I have seen it there just remeber exactly where... ![]()

Ahem... the know-it-all air of superiority is a trait I share with Solas, so I can't really be hypocritical here xD;;;
... Or at least, I've been accused of it, as well as elitism (a word which is IMO deployed cheaply these days), though sometimes in very weird situations when I'm not even claiming to have the knowledge
I think it's more of an upfront or questioning attitude that may sometimes be confused for straightforward arrogance, especially if we try and discuss more delicate topics... which I don't shy away from.
We also have no idea how Solas would be if he didn't have an experience he had - personally I assume he'd still be a smartass, but he'd be way softer around the edges. There would be no "grand tragedy of the past", no ludicrous distance between him and the rest of the world in terms of age and experience and he also wouldn't be one of the very few people who knows exactly what happened in ancient times or any intricacies of how the world works
Because as much as his smartassery can be bothersome, he does know things other people do not.
