Still a mage, mostly same character, just different race. Now I need to know and hopefully someone here could help me: At what age can magic abilities show up?  I think I have a story, but I need some more details that make my Inquisitor distinct from others even if it is just my headcanon ;)

Magic can manifest as early as five years old, but it usually happens around 12 years old.

Oh, that's great! Thank you, dragondreamer. So five years old it is then. Good.

Nocte and Liara have very accurate points but chyeah this is going into OT

There is a reason Solas is only into female elves. I guess. I mean, sure, he may just have a preference but didn't Mark say it's super plot related?

I AM STILL PUTTING MONEY ON PREGNANCY PLOT OKAY

Perhaps people could move discussions of equality and representations to another thread. As well placed as intentions are, it is more likely to cause upset and invoke hostility.

I understand where both sides are coming from, really I do. But the point is nothing can change what has been done, Solas is written as a straight female romance by his creator. Of course you can be disappointed, but the argument of whether there should have been 2 bisexual romances of each gender to make it 'equal' is another matter I think.

I think it is a huge step forward that there are homosexuals in this game as opposed to biseuxal, or player sexual.

:)

I think we are having a misunderstanding here. I'm not saying you said you hope gay people get less options. This is what I'm saying;

A.) Ideally, I would like for everyone to get the same amount of options. This is what I would like to happen. I don't want anyone to get less than anyone else.

B.) Bioware has always given straight people more options than gays and lesbians and continue to do so.

C.) I think it would be alright, if they will not go with equal options, if sometimes gays/lesbians got more options than straight people.

Does that make it any more clear? I'm seriously not trying to argue with you or twist your argument, so I hope this did not come across as hostile.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to have a go or be hostile either! (I'm having an issue with being too snappy with ppl IRL too atm, really need to get this sorted :pinched:) Yes, I agree, It would be okay for gay or lesbians to have more options, but personally, I don't think it should take away from straight females. Yes, in bioware games, we do usually have more options than you. but outside of bioware, we tend to get hardly any more options as you. If it were to take away from anyone, which in a perfect world they wouldn't, it should be straight males that get less. They get everything in all games ever. All MEDIA ever. But then, ofc, that would lead to a lot of shouting the same old rubbish,"Bioware you're moving away from your core fanbase, why you gotta be catering to girls/LGBT. they're clearly not as important/ They don't even play games/ aren't as serious gamers/ don't make up a sizeable chunk of the gaming community" Hell, they do that just because others get options, even when it doesn't affect them *facepalm*. But anyway, my point is, it sucks you're getting less options. I wish everyone was getting equal options. But I'm sure Bioware didn't do it to slight anyone. I'm sure it was the only way they could fit a romance into Solas' arc.

On a whole other point, I reaaaally hope these story reasons are legitimately good. To restrict him so much, there better be a bloody good reason for it.

Edit: And you're right. this did go a bit too OT. I'm sorry. Also, I really hope its not the elf baby theory. I do not like the idea one bit :pinched:

I didn't mean for this to become a big "thing", so I'll just leave it at this; I think everyone that regulars this thread could always agree that we hope they'll put more effort into giving everyone equal options in the future. I know nobody here ever opposed that. So, tearing each other apart over who should get the scraps is really unfortunate. I just hope Bioware will try harder to give everyone equal options going forward and we should leave it at that, which I think we can all comfortably agree on.

What? I like that there are now defined sexualities in the game. Bisexual, Pansexual, Straight and Homosexual. It /IS/ a step forward compared to what other people have experienced in other games, sans Mass Effect's one option.

But if people want to talk about it, is there a PM system to not derail this thread? I shall not talk anymore on here about it. *Zips lips*

that's personal preference. With different sexual orientations you cannot have everyone. I deal with it. But it's not okay to make the story relevant characters heterosexual or to create more heterosexual options than homosexual ones in every single game. Which character you prefer is your personal opinion. Bioware can't make everyone happy without giving us bisexual options. But with sex gating it's even more important to make sure that everyone will have story important romances to choose from.

And why is that? With the gross majority of people being hetero, it's obvious that's who you'd cater to.

Welcome to capitalism.

I think the worst bit, and why it really stings, is we waited so long, so patiently, for this info. So for me, this was a bigger let down than if I had known much earlier. I really was so sure he'd be bi and ungated. It's a good thing he's a romance at all, but I'm just so shocked, definitely did not see it coming. In fact, I think I'd have been less surprised if he wasn't a romance at all than I was by this

Not everyone has a defined sexuality, and perpetually being told someone like yourself isn't realistic gets to really, really, really grate on the nerves.  Nothing personal, it's just adjusting to Solas being so gated is even harder with people repeating that chestnut over and over again.

I agree, I wish they would just let us down right away. It just makes it worse to string it out like this. It seems a bit masochistic to let people keep believing the options could be equal this long just to let them down again.

For some reason I don't see Solas as a dancer... Meaning I don't think he's going to be sweeping female elf inquisitor off her feet at the ball. It's probably already been discussed here before, but I don't follow the forums much, lately.

Welcome to capitalism.

Come now- the vanguard of international communism (and it's early ally, socialism with Chinese characteristics) were hardly inclined to cater to such bourgeois and deviances, which were often associated with the hedonistic and capitalistic west, even when they were at their most anti-capitalistic.

It has almost nothing to do with economic theory. If anything, capitalism would suggest that profit-seekers would seek to engage and make products tailored to minority groups, since un-engaged minorities are untapped revenue sources. Which they kind of did, even if the market was an underground one.

(And in case anyone confuses the first paragraph for my view- that was taken from old Soviet and Chinese propoganda.)

Looking at this historically the odds of a female hetro romance ending well aren't good. There's no fairytale ending with Alistair- they can't have children so Queen Cousland's position is rocky, it's Ferelden not Orlais so being the king's mistress isn't going to be a bed of roses either, being wardens together might be okay but there's the high risk of death and you have to bow to the whims of the other wardens. And hanging over all of that is Morrigan's ritual and the child he has somewhere out there.

Sebastian is a difficult one to get (not flirting with anyone else is harder than it sounds) and at the end of it you get either a sexless marriage or a guy who flirts with your sister.

I once made a joke about Solas being DAI's Kreia but it might not be .

Late to the party but here's Anriel

An elven mage warden can say that they don't even remember where they're from, they were taken so young.

*looks at the rest of the conversation that's been happening*

SO HOW ABOUT THAT SOLAS, HUH?

(please can we stay away from general romance talk, this thread got a warning yesterday about derailment)

This is the first time I've followed a game so intensely prior to release. I went into DAO not knowing about the romance thing and accidentally romanced Alistair :D ("what's going on? Why are you kissing her? WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THAT TENT!?") and then in DA2 I knew to expect romance but completely failed to initiate any until the 3rd act when Fenris sort of happened. It was rubbish   I so hope I'm better prepared for my first DAI run. I don't want a disaster where everyone leaves or dies and I fail to romance Solas after all this planning.

I always feel so bland when I read the passionate romance debates on here. If Bioware were to represent me in their romances then they would be just the worst ever. They'd just be casual friendships with no physical contact whatsoever. If anyone tries to hug me then I just turn into Capaldi's doctor:

tumblr_nawjhuASzH1steejwo1_1280.jpg

I'm so awkward

But stick me in a game and I'll happily be someone else. I kinda want my fuzzy ball of sunshine Dalish to be someone who hugs. I want her to hug Cole  :(  I want that to be a thing. I plan for her to run with Solas, Cole and possibly Blackwall because I want a team that will have good, interesting banter and not just fight all the damn time like the first team I picked in DA2 did. Light hearted bickering and snark is fine but when it gets downright viscous (like having Anders and Merrill together) it just got irritating. It made me want Hawke to go all "IF YOU GUYS DON'T STOP, I WILL TURN THIS TEAM AROUND AND GO HOME."

Fingers crossed for geeky elven banter with Solas. I'd really love to have someone who might understand my elven character a bit better. My Dalish Warden never really got that. Although she is not someone I could imagine getting along too well with Solas. More Sera/IB/Dorian. My Hawke would love him though, so I'm interested to see how that potential cameo might work out.

Possibilities!

According to Patrick, there's a time we can "help Cole feel better", so maybe that includes a hug.

It won't bug me if he refuses to change his clothes for a ball, but I hope we get the chance to tease him about standing out.

I also hope we get some time to enjoy the ball with our chosen companions before Big Plot™ comes crashing down on us.

Edit: I have a question for those planning to romance Solas:

Would you feel cheated if his fade-to-black scene was only a Fade experience and not a "real world" ftb scene in the herald's bedroom? (Assuming every other LI's ftb scene would be in a real bed.) Someone mentioned in this thread IIRC that the writers changed a scene because it seemed too rapey, and that got me thinking about the ftb scene possibly being in the herald's dreams, where you don't necessarily have conscious control.

I hope that all the nine companions can go and we can dance with all of them, and they'll all have their own unique dance style. Iron Bull's will be the running man, but he'll call it the running bull, instead.

As long as the scene is good and of good taste, I have no problem with "where" the scene happen.

I don't know for sure that Cullen is gated, of course, but if he is, I think my argument is validated. Women aren't really getting more options, it's just that different groups of women are getting different options. I would feel pretty slighted, personally--and I think you would too--if I had randomly chosen the one race/class/gender combination that basically had no options, or only one option that I didn't want to pursue. If Solas's romance exists even only in part to prevent that, I'm okay with it. It wouldn't be much comfort to know that I had the same number of options for my gender as the lesbians, straight men, and gay men, if I couldn't actually have those options in my playthrough. Am I still not making sense?

This is why I'm rather concerned for my female Qunari mage. I was hoping to romance her with either Solas or Cullen. I have zero interest in Iron Bull's romance arc. Maybe some day I'd romance him with a male Qunari, but it feels a little unfair that my male Qunari could have two human women, a human male, plus Iron Bull - vs my female qunari having zero non-Qunari male options. (I prefer my characters to be attracted to males, even if my characters *are* male. Though Cass will be a happy exception for one male inquisitor of mine.)

Anyway, at this point it looks like my fem Qunari can romance Cullen. I hope it stays that way. But I have my doubts. I always assumed Cullen would be gated, though it'd sure be nice if they could gate a female love interest, for fairness' sake. But who said life was fair?

I hope for DA 4 and 5 that the setup for romances is delivered a bit more smoothly than it was delivered to us this time around. Romance content isn't worth keeping secret. One of the main reasons I play any Bioware game is for the romance. It's not the only reason, but it is one of the main reasons.

And it doesn't summarize my gaming habits. E.g. I'm obsessed with Dragon's Dogma and I skip those romances. In fact I love Dragon's Dogma more than Dragon Age.

do you think we will se a video with Gareth David-Lloyd like with Viv's and IB's VAs? after all the talking about Solas voice I would melt with something like that...
