Did Solas shut Cole out of his mind at the end of this?

Warning:  Incoming long post about Looking Glass by Feynite.  I'm going to be considerate and put it all under a spoiler tag to not spoil it and to for those folks who just don't care to read about it.

I guess I feel like I should start off by saying that up until this game I was never someone that was ever interested in fan fiction.  And there's no judgment or anything from me by saying that, for people that write it, and enjoy reading it.  It was just a facet of fandom that didn't appeal to me.  Most Solas Thread regulars already know about my Solavellan hellspirial so I don't need to bring it up again lol.  Basically I was a mess and needed an outlet for my feelings.  Fan fiction gets shared a lot in this thread, so I thought why the heck not, I'll give it a try.  And it was pretty effective at getting it all out.  I had some cries, I purged most of it, I felt better.  Despite my unintentional prejudices a lot of what I read was well written, and I am glad I dipped my toe into the pool.  Thankfully I now have a different perspective when it comes to it.

 

There are sooooo many AU time travel Fen'harel + (Slave) Lavellan stories.  Some better than others.  I'm not making a judgment on the quality of anyone's writing, because quite frankly I am no authority on writing and have no place to really criticize; plus I am not interested in hurting anyone's feelings or anything like that.  Making something and sharing it with the world is a brave thing, no matter how good or bad it is.  And every fan art, original song, fan fiction, cosplay etc enriches us all.    Get to the point Luci!  I took the long way around to say that I really didn't want to read yet another AU where Lavellan goes back in time and meets Solas in Arlathan.  Instead of picking apart other stories for what I didn't like, I'm going to explain why despite it all I really enjoyed Looking Glass.

 

The biggest thing for me was Solas.  There's no Fen'harel.  He's not suddenly this harsh and domineering, totally alien and different Solas.  The fact that he's essentially a servant was a great choice.  Also referring to him as Pride.  It really works.  Not using a name for Lavellan other than Puzzle helped as well.  It made it easy for me to accept these characters.  Luckily her characterization of Lavellan fit for my canon Inquisitor.  I could see her saying and doing a lot of the same things.  But for realsies, this less experienced, young, nervous and fumbling Solas.  How refreshing.  And there was still enough there of our Solas that I could believe that was still him, and could one day become the man we meet in game. 

 

The secondary characters were fantastic.  Compassion made me think of Cole without being a lesser stand in.  Curiosity is adorable, I love her.  The story of how Rage came to be and then how Puzzle helped him become Fortitude was beautiful, and I shed a tear or two.  The secondary characters are fleshed out so well.  They belong in this world, and I care about them.  Haninan.  Second Best Elf maybe? 

 

There's so much of what happened in the ancient times that we know nothing besides vague hints and legends.  I love how Feynite chose to fill in the blanks.  I'm not a lore expert and so many of the theories out there are so complex and detailed that it constantly blows my mind how people have put it all together.  There wasn't anything in the story that made me think about if it was plausible.  For my viewpoint and my own DA knowledge, the events of Looking Glass could very well have happened.  It was easy for me to stay immersed in the story because nothing was too outlandish to not be possible. 

 

I don't want this post to get too much longer.  But I just wanted to share some of my thoughts on Looking Glass because I feel it's an exceptional story that I could have no problem seeing on a shelf next to the other Dragon Age books.  I've been one of those folks saying that I'd love it if BioWare would put out an Arlathan style book for us.  But I am ok if we never get that now because Looking Glass, so far, has filled that spot for me. 

 

I actually played a mage as I could never go with the warrior ("What do you mean I have to walk there to be able to kill the enemy? That is so inefficient.") but still the characters are awesome I totally adore Curiosity and Pride, ahh he really strikes me as soooo young but still it is him and I am very happy with the pace they are taking in certain matters even though the suspense is also killing me. Can't wait for the next Chapter.

After the end-game? I think a part of her would have liked to give him a slap, but I'm guessing he is more in need of a hug... so perhaps that pillow I've seen with the full-body Lavellan?

As for semi-realistic... dunno? It's hard to say. Solas seems to be more about memorable gifts that are not necessarily material - something that will last with a person for a lifetime... A day that is entirely for themselves? Learning and singing some sort of ancient elfy Xmas carrol? A whole wagon of frilly cakes? Some kind of nifty new spell or enchantment invented together with Dagna?

I think I would take him somewhere where he hasn't (allegedly) been yet so we can rest and dream and not kill demons for a change. Pre-Trespasser of course as she can still be naive about him then.

Post-Trespasser... hmm. I think I would try to dream something for him, not reach for him but make the forest bloom or snow to fall or something similar when I catch him looking. If it is possible at all for me to do. I would try anyway.

Imagine that Dagna - inspired by her future girlfriend, of course - and Inky devise a special crystal, which they attach to Solas' staff while he's away.

 

Next day on the battlefield:

 

Solas: *casts Veilstrike*

 

*it does nothing except making enemies' pants drop to the ground*

Solas:  ! What the...!?

 

*enemies look no less confused. Next Veilstrike goes even farther and animates the breeches, forcing the enemies to either dance or chase after their possessed garments. Also, their helmets turn to sweetrolls*

 

Solas: *glares at Sera and Lavellan dying from laughter somewhere behind him*

 

It would certainly be memorable!

...I'm not sure I want to think about what Orlesian men's lingerie looks like  Although my Lavellan would totally give it as a prank gift, like "Solas, you won't believe what Josie and I saw in the marketplace!"  

 

Solas does have a sense of humor.  I think he'd find it funny.  Not sure if he'd prank her back by actually wearing it; I suppose it would depend on how...erm...drafty it was to his dignity

Huh... Well, it depends what people think about when they think "sexy" - personally I find well-tailored, shapely garments sexy (like premium Italian-cut suit, ooo   ), and I think it wouldn't take very much for my Lavellan to admire her boyfriend in anything that is made of good quality materials and emphasizes his finer features.

 

I also think Solas would take something like Lavellan sneakily forcing him into something sexier in stride - I mean, what better way of testing her indomitable focus than making her swoon?
