Lelouch of Brittania.

Seriously, guys, if you like Solas, give Code Geass a try. Lelouch is basically my headcanon for young Solas.

He is cunning, a bit more hot-blooded, but also softer as a character, having some close family ties.

He is a member of the nobility in this very classist empire, and he is sick of how the regular people are treated, so he finds this group of rebels and becomes their leader, fighting to bring down the empire.

He will make grave sacrifices to achieve his goals. At some point he even makes a speech how to bring about a better world, this world must be burned down.

So every other minute with him onscreen, I'm thinking, "Oh, hey, Solas, you're looking good in this AU."

He sounds awesome, but unless I'm missing something, isn't the point of a sober buddy to discourage Solas from burning the world to create a better one?  :P

Well, I was thinking of a crossover AU in which Lelouch has "sobered up" and is not helping out Solas go through the same process :P

If we're going with a character who never supported "the end justifies the means" kind of perspective, then Edward Elric would be perfect. He's made a devastating mistake, wants to bring back what was lost, but would not hurt innocent people to achieve his goals.

Something to lighten the mood up - ever since Cole said in Trespasser that Solas knows how to talk with spirits so they help out of their own volition (so basically he asks really nicely) I can't help to laugh imagining that they'd stay and do more menial jobs than eternally guarding his abandoned sanctuary.

I mean... Is this is how cleaning looks like if Solas is in charge of it (with animals = spirits)?

Now I'm picturing one of the glow-y armored spirits from Trespasser, brandishing feather dusters against the injustice of dust bunnies.

Too bad I can't draw :P

So a thought occurred to me. In some ways Fen’Harel reminds me of Adversary from Shadowrun.

"Wherever there is a cosmological order, there is an entity who wishes to overthrow it. Adversary is the original rebel working to thwart the mythical Powers-That-Be. Whether he acts out because of his own selfishness or because he is helping those less privileged, free will and cynicism are his trademarks and tools. In some Judeo-Christian traditions, Adversary is the fallen angel who has spurned God’s will, while some North American and Asian shamanic traditions see Adversary as a trickster figure and manipulator who brings change."

Glowy purple spirit shouting "May the Dread Wolf take you!" at a bundle of very thick cobwebs.

....Actually, to think about it, his sanctuary seems to be in a pretty good shape considering that it's seen thousands of years of misuse. Maybe this is exactly what happens? xD

There's a codex entry in Jaws of Hakkon about why a lot of old places don't crumble or decay like they should.  So if it works unintentionally, with whatever spirits happen to be around, I'm sure it can be done intentionally to far greater effect.

The archetype of the rebel god is a pretty universal one, and yeah, Solas and Adversary both draw on it heavily.  Though TBH, I've always thought of Solas a bit more like Harlequin, since he's not actually a god.  Or rather, I think Harlequin is what Solas might be like if he got his head out of the past :P

"The lesson is this - the game is rigged. The cards are stacked. The dice are loaded. It's the same as it always was. Every cycle. People in power exert power. Little people cower in their homes, think what they're told to think, and buy whatever product will help them forget how horrible their lives are for another day. And that's why we don't play their fragging game. We don't swallow their drek sandwich and politely ask for another. It's why we run the shadows. That's where real life is, kiddo."

... Actually that sounds almost exactly like Geldauran's Claim:

"There are no gods. There is only the subject and the object, the actor and the acted upon. Those with will to earn dominance over others gain title not by nature but by deed.

I am Geldauran, and I refuse those who would exert will upon me. Let Andruil's bow crack, let June's fire grow cold. Let them build temples and lure the faithful with promises. Their pride will consume them, and I, forgotten, will claim power of my own, apart from them until I strike in mastery."

Yeah, probably. Ah, it's been such a long time since I watched Code Geass. One of these days I just need to binge all the old anime I watched in school.

Who are some other characters that could maybe join in on that AA circle with Solas? I feel like Tarvek Sturmovoraus from Girl Genius could use a good whack with the "Listen to your charming lady friend and don't do evil sh*t" stick.

The recent video games are IMO pretty good (Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong).  I haven't gotten around to Hong Kong yet, but I definitely enjoyed the first two, and there's a decent amount of fan content for those games as well.

I know that feeling. I’ve personally never played the pen and paper but I’ve read a lot about it, have a lot of the books, and I’ve played Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall which I highly recommend.

I've developed an appreciation for non-mages studying magic. Cause they're basically scientists. There are these forces, they can't simply control them at will, so they study them, finding ways to tame them with ingenuity.

Science FTW. If we could save Solas and the world with science, I would worship DA forever.

This makes me think of some "Misunderstood Hero Anonymous" meetings with Fen'Harel, Magneto, Lelouch, and other similar characters, meeting every week to share their progress on not screwing up the world.

Solas: Hi, I'm Fen'Harel. First of all, I haven't destroyed the world in at least two thousand years.

*everyone claps*

Solas: I almost slipped recently, but then I got help, and with the support of the Inquisition managed to stay clean.

*everyone claps again*

Solas: And just the other day I saw the Inquisitor whom I really care about and they got me through a really tough time. I could have killed them to achieve my goals. But I did not.

*more clapping*

Group leader: Your journey is impressive, Fen'Harel. And what is the next step?

Solas: Oh, bring down the Veil, obviously.

About Geldauran's Claim and the Qunari:

Could be a coincidence but they both talk about mastery. Solas who was on some terms with Forgotten Ones has a mural in the Davaarad where we find the codex about Qunari 'mastery'.

Some notes about Qunari mastery: "there is little trust for those who are most likely to be deceived from knowing who they are", "When balance is lost, suffering follows. Mastery of the self is, therefore, the first and greatest duty".

On saarebas: "They do not truly understand that the loss of mastery comes with a loss of the self". - They apparently lose mastery when they take 'song liquid' (lyrium, which is Titan's blood), and the song becomes so loud that it's 'hard to find wisdom'.

Then Geldauran's Claim with: "Their pride will consume them, and I, forgotten, will claim power of my own, apart from them until I strike in mastery".

Hey all, long time no see.

So it's that time of year where I re-read one of my favorite childhood stories, The Velveteen Rabbit, and I was struck by how many themes in the story could relate to Solavellan. To summarize, a velveteen rabbit becomes the favorite toy of a little boy, and said rabbit is told by the old wise rocking horse that when a child loves a toy enough, it will become Real. But the little boy contracts scarlet fever not too long after, and he's sent to the seaside to recover while his room is disinfected and his toys are burned, including the velveteen rabbit. The rabbit is left out in the courtyard overnight and cries a real tear, which summons the Nursery Fairy, which tells him that because the boy loved him so much, she will make him Real. She takes him to the forest, turns him into a real bunny, and he goes off to live with the other bunnies in the forest.

I've always loved the idea that if you love something enough, it'll become real.

In a way, this has shades in common with Solas and Lavellan. He spent most of the game thinking of her (and most modern Thedosians) as "not really people," but over time she proved him wrong and he fell in love with her, and... well, as Cole puts it: "You're Real, and it means everyone could be Real."

I've been really invested in my white-haired "moon bunny" Inquisitor for months, especially since I love the "moon/wolf" symbolism to their relationship (Solas cries for his vhenan the way the wolf cries to the moon and other sappy stuff like that), but now I'm almost tempted to make a non-mage elf with light brown hair, whom Solas can especially see as "not of my people" at first (since she's an elf who also doesn't have magic on top of not having immortality), but grow to see as Real and love her for it.

(The conflict between the toy rabbit and the "real" rabbits also sort of reflects the conflict between various elves, who sometimes accuse each other of not being "real elves." There's a scene in the book where the velveteen rabbit is left out in the garden, and a few live rabbits approach him. They ask him why he doesn't hop around like them, and when they figure out he can't, they mock him for not being a real rabbit like them. It kind of reminds me of Dalish elves--who live in the forest like rabbits--occasionally sneering at city elves for not being "true elves" like them, and now ancient elves like Solas and Abelas sneering at modern elves for being "not my people." No doubt Solas sees himself as the Nursery Fairy who'll turn all the fake toys into Real Elves, with some being all for it and others saying, "No, I'm fine the way I am.")

Well, you know me with angst  I feed on it. :D

In case it helps, you are speaking my language. I am also a loyal friend to the Cheese Machine. (Sigh. It's a problem. I also adore the perfect pop song. What can I say, I'm fragile that way...)

As you can see from the icons under my avatar, I haven't actually played any of the Mass Effect games! (Something else to do to fill in the time before DA4, I suppose!)  So my only knowledge about is what I've gleaned from posts in the Dragon Age forums that say it was a trilogy.  Thanks for enlightening me!   :D

Please, please do. Mass Effect is wonderful. (ME2 is my favorite of the bunch. Because: misfits becoming family. How can you not love that?)

Play it for sure. It's a space shooter, but the story is good and the characters are incredible. The trilogy aspect is because it follows the story of one character. Any new Mass Effect game will be its own thing, but set in the same world.

Totally agree. And it's funny how much more I appreciate the ME trilogy now, knowing how rare it is to get to follow a single character through so much history. I love my FemShep, I adore my FemShep. She actually inspired me in so many ways. And Jennifer Hale was fantastic (of course) performance wise. (I still love it that she's KREM! Adorable KREM!)

So yeah, I'd adore it if in DA4 we were able to revisit or replay our Quizzies in some way, even slightly. The tragic romance angle does kind of cry out for it (in all its gloriousness) for us Solasmancers.

Well, in both cases he basically resigned himself to hurting people he cares about - and in case of Inquisitor, especially approved one, basically burdening with what may yet be a pretty impossible task: finding a miraculous 'better way' to a plan not even a thousands-year old demigod was able to find, or a way to stop him (though I assume that that would be easier, at least on technical level, given that Solas pretty much tells any Quizzy "I won't say more to you, because there obviously exists a way for you to disrupt my plans").

Or so I hope. I truly feel that was a slight nod to omniscience from the writers, not Solas himself. In that, I do believe he can't see a way out of this thing. BUT THEY DO. Sigh. Evil wonderful writing monkeys.

In case you haven't seen it yet, the new Trespasser bard songs are a free download until the end of the year:

https://www.dragonag...il?sf43292551=1

Thank you! This seriously made my millennium. I love all the bard songs, and there were several new ones in Trespasser that made me sniffle (and stand there waving a virtual lighter). I'm so excited to add these to my DAI collections, so thanks.

Now we just need the evil emotional diabolical "Dread Wolf" variation released (the surging strings! I needs them!) and we can all be happy and miserable together. Sigh.

I totally agree that this is Solas's version of housekeeping. Perhaps in a nice tenor instead. But yeah.

Good plumbers are hard to find and we'll need them when we rebuild the Empire.

You're telling me. If i had it to do over again? I'd be a plumber. Seriously. Forget freelance writing. Plumbers will always have work. Just sayin'.

^This. Mass Effect is an awesome series. To any of you who haven't played it, I'll say it again, PLEASE try this out! It's definitely something worth playing especially if you're waiting for DA4. :)

And yes, ME2 is my favorite in the series as well. I did enjoy ME1 but I didn't get seriously invested in the characters until ME2. Suicide mission still gives me goosebumps. (That awesome track! <3)
