Um ... we don't know when Abelas wrote what he wrote.  It may have been before or AFTER the Veil was created.  There is no reference one way or another.  We also don't know how long after Mythal was murdered that Solas put up the Veil.

There IS a tenuous reference. I mentioned it, didn't I? Abelas writes that they have to prepare to those who cast Mythal down. We know that they're the Evanuris - and we know from trip around Vir Dirthara that even 'normal' ancient elves noted immediately after the Veil that the gods went silent.

So 85% certain that Abelas wrote his little manifest right after Mythal was struck, but before the Veil was erected.

And that was MY point ... immortals most likely wouldn't have any perception of what "very long time" is because it doesn't exist for them.  It's like people who live in the desert going, what's snow?  What is the passage of time to an immortal?  Nothing.  The very concept of "long time" may not even be in their vocabulary.

I'll just... paste what I wrote about that before: we all have a chance to observe Solas and note that he's not really confused with time or its passing - and every single time he's referred to time of distant past (or we can deduce that he does), before the Veil, it says that it's been a long time ago. So he knows and feels that it took a while; it didn't just pass him like a week or a month, or even a decade; nor minutes or even though he's spent 99% of time of modern Thedas' existence in uthenera - so a state of mind that was likely even more 'floaty' and fluid in terms of time perception than likely the unVeiled world was.

Also - as much as the time could be stretched, we do indeed know that ancients did feel the passing of time, just based on Solas' rune on the Titan Mutal in Deep Roads:

"For a moment, the scent of blood fills the air, and there is a vivid image of green vines growing and enveloping a sphere of fire.
The vision grows dark. An aeon seems to pass. Then the runes crackle, as if filled with an angry energy.
A new vision appears: elves collapsing caverns, sealing the Deep Roads with stone and magic.
Terror, heart-pounding, ice-cold, as the last of the spells is cast."

The passing of time appears to be felt enough for the author to place the feeling of passing it in the rune, as well as its reader to feel it.

Then there's Solas comment in Dirthamen's Temple, after Inky wonders how come they can understand the runes: "The secret of this temple have remained unspoken for too long. They wish to be known."

So even inanimate objects imbued with magical power appear to feel the passage of time.

We also know that spirits can feel the passing of time - as in case of spirit bound to remains of Telana.

Heck, even the possible Maker or mysterious 'eternal being' who sends Perseverance (http://dragonage.wik...severance_(bow)) can tell the passing of time, judging from description itself: "Long have I endured, as the world has endured. Though time has worn the skies, it shall not reduce me, for I am eternity."

I agree with Elessara - we don't know if Abelas was the last to drink from the well - in the elven writing he mentions new people at the temple and it may be that one of those were the last to drink from the well. But honestly, isn't it irrelevant who was the last to drink from it?

And I don't think Mythal was a human back in Arlathan but an elf as the other evanuris. Besides that comment from Flemeth that no one has called her a human for a long time - and this can be interpreted in different ways, nothing speaks for her being a human. At least in one banter Solas gives the impression that the humans of his time weren't really evolved and traded with pearls and bones and such things.

Oh and not wanting to nit-pick but Solas says to a romanced Lavellan it was a long time and not a very long time. But still - it seems in this case it was before he went to sleep which is quite a long time ago.

Yes, but we're talking very specific beings telling us something was 'long time ago', ey? Even Abelas mentions the passing of time and that the elves have destroyed themselves 'long ago' - a time that certainly happened prior to the Veil, given that he mentions that the shemlen didn't destroy Arlathan and that the entire war between Elvenhan and Tevinter was basically Tevinter scavenging the remains.

As Elessara pointed out, we're not even sure if the word time has any meaning to her. But even if it does, it's not like she sits us down and tells us what she considers a long time to be. Maybe four hundred years ago is a long time ago to her, despite being a small fraction of her life.

Besides - Abelas doesn't mince words on anything else, so I don't think he'd mince words there. And Solas - Solas has to use the phrase "a long time ago." It'd be a pretty big blow to his cover if he told Lavellan he hasn't gotten down and dirty in millenia.

I dunno. It just... seems like a really weird way to take it. I think it's more probable that they all say variously "a long time" because it's been, y'know, a long time. I mean, what else are they supposed to say?

Yes, and the mosaic of Fen'Harel looks very 'wolfy' to me :D Just like other depictions of Mythal look very... dragony. Other times she's Nike Of Samothrace :P

The fact that she is portrayed on official depiction of herself as an elf, while we all know that the Evanuris were false gods and did use propaganda means little. We don't really know what exactly the Evanuris were, aside from being powerful mages and "the first of Solas' people" - and what exactly that means, it's anyone's guess so far.

But if you didn't have to be an elf to be one of the People, then they'd have no reason to distort her appearance. It'd be common enough that people would accept it. As a matter of fact, you'd think we'd see other examples of non-elven People if this theory were true. You'd think Flemythal would make that "You make the People proud" comment to human Quizzies as well, since the only thing separating them from Elven Quizzies is heritage, which by this theory is irrelevant to being of the People.

Just seems shaky to me, especially since it asks you to overlook more rational explanations.

Different topic:

If we accept the theory that elves are spirits who decided to take physical form (there's strong evidence for this but still a theory) then Kieran's question to an elf Inquisitor makes more sense.  I forget which conversation option you have to choose but Kieran can say, I just don't know why you'd choose to look like that.  That response always made me go, huh?  But after going through the Vir Dirthara that question really does make a lot more sense.

Why did spirits choose to have (as Bull puts it) pointy ears and freakishly large eyes?  And be super skinny.  Have we ever seen an overweight elf in any of the games?

First of all, when did Abelas drink from the well? I missed or forgot something apparently.

It is interesting to note that in the scene with Mythal, Morrigan and Kieran an Inquisitor who drank from the Well will display markings when Mythal uses her power on them.

Spoiler

Jump to 3:49 to see them.

This also happens when you drink from the well. At 8:56:

Speaking of water - I do wonder if perhaps all water isn't way more tied to the Titans than we suspect now. We do know that oceans are supposed to be 'Earth's tears' right? And every single time we know we're near a Titan they're surrounded by a ton of water.

It's especially curious that in Descent it's noted that the water has blue'ish, lyrium-like hue - and while it's not advised to swim in it, the same sort of blue'ish hue is noted in Lyrium Falls on Storm Coest (just above the Titan, as we know now), but by the time the water flows from the cave it appears to be normal water. In fact it seems to just be... a normal river. That later falls into the Waking Sea.

Soo... how much water comes from Titans themselves?

This is interesting because Mythal supposedly came up out of the water to heal the earth from the sun scorching the land (because it was jealous of the earth). Then we saw Mythal in the Deep Roads, and the codex of her saying to the Dwarves 'never yours the sun'.

Interesting that those...runes? don't look anything like Mythal's vallaslin.

Maybe in Arlathan the vallaslin was just a physical marking which hide a compulsion spell?

Maybe elfy ears have an anatomical purpose we are just not aware of yet. If you look at the remaining ancient elves in Mythal's palace or whatever the place is called where the well is, they are quite perfectly built with all those muscles and such. If I were a spirit choosing a body I would probably choose something that works the best.

Ah so about half an hour to 40 minutes off finishing my Solasmance through Tresspasser. My latest save is at the same place I always save at, when you go through the Eluviwhats one last time at night and everyone says their big goodbyes.

I gave Nehn the Mythal Vasything (I'm so bad at remembering the name of Elfy things, I must be Sera deep down) So I felt it was fitting for her to drink from the well. I played her so Dalish until Solace broke her when he dumped her. I cannot wait for the possible consequences of a Solasmance drinking from the well in future games. So fun. Anyway I'll play the end of Tressasser tomorrow with some popcorn handy. Too fun!

Then it's on to my Dickquisitor to pick up my remaining achievement I need for 100% I'm tossing up between male human and a Bull romance or female Qunari and Sera. Choices!

It's been great lurking in here. I've really enjoyed the art posts and everyone's theories on everything <3

PS is it wrong of me to play that break up scene a few times through just to see if the sad heart broken inquisitor results in a sadder looking Solas over an angry heart broken one?

I really wanted the angst up to 110%

Solas you must suffer for breaking her heart!

Both?

i think it's worth it to ignore the super negative parts of the fandom. And by that I don't mean people with different opinions that are just opposed or strong, but like...the people who won't even try to listen to a reasonable discussion and interject at the slightest opening with why you are wrong.

I think we have had a good amount of discussion across multiple angles in here in a generally civil way, so when I see the really negative stuff outside this place, it's like....oh....ohhh.

But, still being someone who likes and expresses sympathy for the life and character, and even beliefs to an extent of Anders, even without condoning those ultimate actions, I'm kind of used to this snap hate/critical/___________ must die/is completely terrible/no excuse/etc' stuff.  :P

There's critical, and reasoned, and then there are haters.

I already have all of the DA DLC except the Spoils packs. Buuut, holy crap, I knew it would go on sale again, but now Sims 4 DD is even cheaper than in the last sale. Uuuugh. I swore I wouldn't get pulled in again. But I could make Solas and my Lavellan and all my favorite NPC's with the new graphics and everyone would be happy and have babies ever after, and, and...

Only... he's calling all these other elves to him so he isn't really *quite* alone. Which begs the questions:

1. What is he offering to all those other elves? Why are they flocking to him? Do they have reason to believe that there will be a place for them in his remade world? What disqualifies Lavellan from the remade world?

2. Is he lying to them all, and will they all just be his unwitting pawns until they die once he tears down the Veil? Because that's pretty cold.
