Heehehe. She does look very angry since her vallaslin was removed and Solas left.

I had to turn off most of my mods...she just has the skin and makeup on now, plus her new PJs. Maybe her modded pony tail will show up every now and then.

The vanilla pony tail actually looks pretty good though..

Just had a weird Christmas trip, and thought I'd share it.

Whatever similar event there is to Christmas in the world of Thedas, I imagined my Lavellan being rather foreign to the custom, considering she's a Dalish who's lived most of her life in the wilderness and never celebrated any human festivities. After being exposed to it for the first time, be it at Skyhold or Haven, she doesn't get the idea of it at all, and when she finds a present in her room she becomes confused. Where did it come from, what did she do to deserve it and whatever for?

But after grasping some understanding of the reason behind gift-giving, she decides to find something that Solas might like. Probably gives him something of Dalish origin, like a carving from her clan.

Maybe too late to the party, but the hair "long waves" and some other that replace the same base model as Ehlenna's hair work everywhere in trespasser. The others only work outside of winter palace and crossroads.. Katherine face texture and settrah brows work and there is a mod that helps you wear the wedding dress in trespasser instead of formal attire..
(But I don't think you'd want to restart now xD)

There are various Solavellan Christmas drabbled as well as art around. A lot of them are cute, with some being just like this.

I've actually been kicking around a holiday-inspired drabble in my head for a bit myself, but not Solavellan (I am super blocked on Solavellan), but from my Lavellan's past timeline. Something cute with her girlfriend. I'm in a fluffy mood, so maybe.

Bleah... I spilled tea all over my laptop this morning and, after letting it dry, it's still non-functional. I was watching Trespasser Solas romance endings when it happened, because I couldn't remember if he says that line about enjoying the time she has left (he doesn't - not for a romanced Inquisitor). Anyway... I play my games on my desktop computer, and I have a save just before walking through the Eluvian after defeating Saarath so I just replayed it.  And so here are some a lot of screen captures (not in order).

My Lavellan was a mature hunter (rogue) in her late 20s or early 30s; curious, quite self-possessed and with a good sense of humour. She won't take any crap, even from an ancient elven mage with godlike powers!

Faolchu Ban (what the humans call her) / Fentelban (her actual name) looks for Solas

Spoiler

If looks could kill.  (Fentelban always looks a little fierce... probably why her parents named her 'white wolf'.)

Spoiler

Pouty Solas

Spoiler

Solas looks reproachful

Spoiler

This question pretty much sums up the past three years of the Inquisitor's life.

Spoiler

Two wolves, worlds apart.

Spoiler

Snarky Solas is snarky. I got that you disapproved of that decision years ago.

Spoiler

You've already become it.

Spoiler

Something neat that I hadn't noticed before (surprising, since I have played the end through about 30 times, probably) is that whatever option you choose for Lavellan at the beginning of the conversation sets her facial expressions for the rest of the conversation.  So, if you pick the angry "You lied to me!" response, she always looks a little angry.  But if you take the more openminded "My people were wrong about you" response, she looks more cool and collected.  I bet she looks more sad if you pick the "Ironically, yes" response.

*after spending hours dressing family's huge Xmas tree*

Asfjhfg... MY FEET D: I wish I could say that that's enough of standing in preparation for this edition of Christmas, but alas...

Anyway - since I've made my post about legs, I'd leave to bed after mentioning something that may or may not be vaguely hilarious. I see many people swoon over how Solas moves, esp. in cutscenes where we can see some of it.

The secret of his 'sultry walk' is actually petty simple - Solas uses female walk cycle.

I am so not kidding

The male and female walk cycle animation in DA is pretty distinct - it's easiest to notice when we observe feet.

Male walk cycle makes character spread their legs a bit; their feet land with some distance from one another (this is why when the male walk cycle is applied to females during cutscenes it looks so weird - like they have full diapers or something) and the step seems shorter due to that, as well as less sway in hips.

Female walk cycle keeps the feet planting longer steps in very straight line - they even look like they're criss-crossing sometimes. That 'almost cris-cross' is actually pretty noticeable in the GIF above :D

I recall reading that they had to tone down the walk because originally Solas looked like he was prancing. I wonder if that accounts for the way he looks there.

I want to see test Solas now.

Before they did most of Solas' writing and hired GDL, he was voiced by Microsoft SAM text-to-speech.

I will NEVER get caught up. :( :( :(

I saw that come up, the playing other races thing, and roleplaying people not like you isn't appropriation, because there are ways to roleplay others without resorting to stereotypes and such, and if it's the case of humans, well, there's never anything wrong with a bit of research of you're looking for some things to round out a character.

And this is before we get to the fact we have fantasy races like elves and dwarves in play. Roleplaying, and by extension, even writing about people different from you can, as dawnstone says, be a good way to express or develop greater empathy in general. It's kind of ridiculous to me because....should all my characters somehow be portrayed as my exact ethnic mix and never men? Should I never write any male characters? etc

There's respectful and avoiding stereotypes and tropes, and then there are ridiculous lengths you could take this.

And that complaint came to the Dragon Age Confessions blog, where some readers were simply asking for more non-white characters used in the posts. Since the mods provide most of the screenshots, there weren't many. It was a reasonable enough request, IMO.

I had the Bread Wolf chapter loaded yesterday, but realized I hadn't read the previous one, so by the time I went to read the new one, it had been removed.

Doughnut Rebel was good though. I was glad to see an update.

This is a thing? There's political correctness and then there's just crazy. I guess when I played that vaguely "Korean looking" male player character in KotOR 2 I was appropriating someone else's culture and gender? To the best of my knowledge there is no Korea in the Star Wars universe. These are fantasy worlds. My husband's character in his favorite D&D campaign was a half-orc. I suppose he was appropriating biracial culture. RPGs are excellent exercises in empathy, as you say. Putting one's self in someone else's shoes, as one can in a BioWare game, can be a valuable experience for everyone. Kids these days...they just don't get it. The label the world slaps on you is not who you are. Just because someone may not look like you, talk like you, or come from the same background as you does not mean that they are not like you. We are all a lot more similar than some folks would like us to believe.

hehehe...spa day

Spoiler

Spa day is fun, but the necks. I only hope that one day BioWare will discover how to seamlessly blend a head and neck. At least we're not all still wearing those totally uncool matching choker necklaces. ;)

Trespasser is cruel to mods. The hair mods will work once you start venturing the Eluvian Network, but ONLY when you are traversing in those areas. Anywhere in the palace and it'll be vanilla. Warning, though: modded companions, retextures and altered game mechanics may not work either. Skin textures seem to be fine though.

I haven't had trouble with my eyebrow and hair mods in Trespasser. Just the smooth hair texture mod still crashes the game unless I disable it. I only installed mods after my first run through Trespasser, so maybe some mods were updated to avoid those problems in the interim.

You just blew my mind. That is totally the female walk cycle...so that's why Solas is so darned schmexy. And here I thought it was the ancient elven thighs. Why didn't they use that animation for everyone? The male characters always look like charging American football players, and it is simply criminal when they use the male walk cycle on the female characters absentmindedly. Just one well done gender neutral cycle would be preferable to what we have been getting, thanks.

~*~ I'll just slip this down here at the end. My halla-day treat, A First Day Chant, is FINALLY DONE! Yay, back to my usual lollygagging, ranting, and lurking. Check out Chapter 5 if you can spear the time. I hope all y'all who celebrate have a very safe and happy Halla-Day! ~*~

Cool thing to spot re: Solas' walk, Midnight Tea! I thought the Solas design team had just chosen to subtly troll the players by giving him the loose-limbed saunter of a wolf. I have seen them move similar to that (except, you know, quadrupedally) when they're not in a hurry. I've lived and worked within their range in northern Canada for most of the past 11 years.  I don't see them often, and it's always a treat when I do.

His face is also reminiscent of a wolf's head, I find.

I've believed he has been modeled after a wolf for some time (since ever I have come across that theory) :P Feminine walk requires more hip swing. :)

I recall reading that they had to tone down the walk because originally Solas looked like he was prancing. I wonder if that accounts for the way he looks there.

I'm pretty sure their intent is "gliding" rather than "prancing" :D So no wonder they'd tone it down - I mean, they had to do something, especially with Solas' narrow hips. How he can even glide so casually with hips that narrow is anyone's guess, though I assume elvhen elongated, more elastic forms, perhaps more flexible spine (a punch from Inky sent Dorian sprawling on the ground, while Solas just bent 90 degrees sideways and stayed on his feet after his punch, lol) and long limbs can explain it.

Anyway, I'm quite certain that all that elvhen fluid motions is supposed to subtly depict elves' closer relation to spirits, which literally glide and float through air. Even Cole has many ballet-like moves and is even described to have such (it's especially visible when he arrives to warn Inquisition and points at Corypheus on the hills. The gesture is almost dance'y).

You just blew my mind. That is totally the female walk cycle...so that's why Solas is so darned schmexy. And here I thought it was the ancient elven thighs. Why didn't they use that animation for everyone? Just one well done gender neutral cycle would be preferable to what we have been getting, thanks.

I think all races and genders would benefit from more individualized walk cycles - I mean, there are natural differences between males and females (our hips and more elastic spines built to withstand the strain of pregnancies influences the way we move), just like there are differences between humans and elves or dwarves (size and build).

But I think the whole old-gen thing has pretty much limited the amount of animations they could cram into the game, hence some animations seem weird on some models or even deform them (poor elf males and their arms glued to their ribcages, or females hunching when they walk...) - but now that they're focusing on next-gen and have more time to play around with stuff rather than wrangling with Frostbite, we may yet see much improved animations in DA4 :)

Okay, gotta go feasting with family for a few hours. Happy holidays all!

Since we celebrate Christmas on the 24th here in Scandinavia I have spent all day stuffing my face with food and treats, hanging out with my family and opening my presents! I know most of you are still waiting for your turn, so I would never miss this opportunity to gloat a bit!  ;)  :P

I wish you all Happy Holidays, whether you be regular posters or lurkers, and I hope that Bioware will give us some kind of news as a Christmas present (I know, not likely, but hey we might get a Christmas miracle!).

Hugs to you all! <3
