I got DAI Cinematic Tools. I figured out how to use the flycam, but for the life of me, none of the visuals effects seem to work. I keep adjusting all the lighting, colors, gaussian blurs, etc and nothing is happening!!

 

It's hard to control the flycam, and the characters kind of glitchily jump around if you attempt to flycam cut-scene conversations.

If you have a controller, it can make things easier. The keyboard is much trickier to use, and whenever I use it for flycam I normally ended up either never-endingly high in the sky or further down in the ground like I fell into a bottomless pit.

Play the game with the keyboard settings, and when you ready the flycam, plug in the controller and it'll allow you to move the camera with it instead of keys. At the same time, you'll be able to click on the dialogue wheel with the mouse. That's how it worked for me. I don't know how to get the visual effects to work for me though.

Actually if Mythal called Solas it would be much better. We would speculate who Solas is wait is he god like Mythal  . And at the same time Trespasser would be much better.

 

I've said this before. I would have enjoyed Trespasser even more if my character wasn't just catching up on information I already knew. If we were able to discover Solas' identity at the same time as our characters it would have been much more intense. Having months to formulate theories and plan our reactions when our characters met up with Solas again was a bit detrimental if you ask me.

You guys, I'm feeling a bit mopey about something that I suspect you all have relevant insights about. In 2015 I was motivated by Inquisition to write my first ever fan fic. I actually ended up writing two. I felt like it was an amazing writing exercise. My family has been waiting for me to write that novel I promised I'd write for a decade, but depression and negativity have gotten in my way. I think writing fic has gotten me back on the right track, and I certainly don't regret doing it. However, I'm disappointed by the feedback. I know that my second fic is superior to my first, so I can't understand why my first fic has more kudos, comments, and hits than my second.

 

I'm beginning to think it has a lot to do with rating and smut content. Fics with smut always seem to get more readers than fics without. I'm not going to throw in out of place smut for the sake of getting people to read my stuff. It makes me want to write off the whole idea of contributing to the fan fic community. Anyway, I spent a lot of time writing A First Day Chant, and I'm just disappointed that so few people gave it a read. I don't need phony pats on the back; criticism would have actually been more helpful. Now it is just receding deeper and deeper into the AO3 archive where no one will ever find it. I've even considered adding an epilogue (which would be ridiculous) just to shuffle it back up where people will see it.

 

I'm probably just having a bad day, but what do you all think? Should writers just expect less interest in smutless fics? If I write fan fic again should I be sure to included schmexy times? Is it a feasible strategy to rate something M or E to string people along and then never actually deliver the goods (Feynite's Looking Glass doesn't seem very explicit to me, just saying)? Is the key to getting readers just writing super long fics so that your stuff gets shuffled up to the top of the search results more often? Do people get a lot of readers from tumblr followers or something? Meh. Probably just a bad day, like I said.

I totally understand you when it comes to being obsessed with Solas and the Solasmance. For the entire 2015, I've been drawing nothing but DA:I, Solas, and Solavellan. It's also because of that obsession that I've started drawing (Solavellan) smut. *cough* 

 

Right now, for the first time in about 15 years, I've started to get back into writing fanfiction. Started writing about my Lavellan set a few years before Inquisition and maybe I'll venture into more Solavellan-centric stuff. I'm a bit rusty but it's therapeutic in a way.

I don't know if it will help any but I've bookmarked your fic. I'm still only half awake so please forgive me if this sounds incoherent at times, or more so than usual I have noticed that writers that update regularly, even if it's short drabbles get more views, because unfortunately once it gets buried, fewer are going to go digging, they want new stuff to read, and aren't going to look far. Those with multiple fics and AU versions also get more views, probably because they are adding new stuff to read. Maybe they have a larger support group, or know more people I really don't know.

 

I want to say I loved First Day Chant, and couldn't wait for you to update it. It was well written, the story drew me in and I really loved the imagery you created with words. As to feedback and constructive criticisms, few readers seem to do that period. I know I'm guilty of not leaving lengthy comments because most of the time I'm taking a few short moments in between things to read something before I dash off to the next screaming thing on my to do list. I'm also one that has been burned too many times when offering positive feedback. They say, tell me what you think, but what they want is a pat on the back and a good girl/boy it was great. So I stopped doing more than find one or two things in their writing that stood out to me to say this is what I found memorable funny, sad etc. Also putting into words that convey what I felt when reading something is difficult for me and I will sit looking at that box for 30 min trying to come up with something that the writer will appreciate/accept without saying something wrong. I'm the same with discussions for online classes. I swear I waste more time writing, deleting and then starting again than I do working on real homework issues.

 

I think things move much faster on AO3 than they do on Fanfic. There are far more people reading and commenting on my fic there than AO3...I had expected it to be the opposite. Except for Glistening Desperado, which I think is pretty much ignored on Fan Fic less than 50 views total. I know it's nice to see the views/hits climb and see the comments in your inbox, and to be discouraged when they aren't there. But the reason you write should be because you want to. Oddly the more popular my fic got the more stressful it has become to write. Because now I had people that actually expected me to write more, and I worried about loosing followers if I wrote what I wanted to instead of told the story they think I should write. But the story is for me, so I keep writing it.

 

Then there is the timing. The game is finished, and there are fewer people spending their time on the forums, or reading fics. They are off to find the next shiney. They are finding new games or other forms of entertainment and I don't think they are actively looking on the board to see who's updated. This has been a bit depressing for me, because I was a late comer to the thread and writing. It was great finding a group that I could share my love for the game with. But with nothing new coming for the game fewer are commenting. And it's sad to see everyone slipping into the shadows.

 

My tmblr is new and doesn't get looked at much at all. I doubt it does anything to boost my fic at all, but one or two follow it for those updates, so I'll update there for them.

Advice about fanfic, mainly my opinions, so grain of salt, yadda yadda:

Honestly, you could write the most amazing fanfic in the world, perfect grammar, gorgeous prose, the character voices true, and if its not what the fandom wants at the moment, you're not going to get a lot of response. I had a look at your fic's summary (haven't read it yet), and what put me off reading it  was the Christmas connection to it. I usually don't like holiday-themed stuff, so I gave it a pass. It is likely delightful, but yeah, I may not be the only one who saw that and moved on. 

 

I'd say, you have to decide if you are writing for the audience, or for yourself. If it is "an exercise", practice for something more satisfying you want to do later, then treat it like one. You're stretching muscles, you're learning what you know and don't know about where your writing can go, what you like to write, how much energy you are willing to put into a project. Not everyone who is watching you do your exercise is going to enjoy it though, even if you are the picture of beauty and grace.

 

If you are writing mainly for the audience, your writing doesn't have to be great (even Feynites, unicorn that she is, has flaws like allowing her story to meander, and thus losing tension, and not everyone enjoys her Solas characterization or writing style). But, you're going to want to tailor your story to the most popular pairing(s), make sure it's multi-chapter, with a slow-burn romance plot, with maybe a bit (a lot) of angst thrown in, and use multiple platforms to promote your work (tumblr & AO3 are the most popular. Don't oversaturate, or it may make people annoyed.).

 

Even then, with a perfectly tailored fanfic, with all the right tropes, and pairings and fluffy shenanigans, it's not a magic bullet. And if it's not the sort of thing you enjoy writing, you'll get little creative satisfaction.

 

Smut/sex scenes are not actually required, though, yes, you will get hits for it, and likely a lot of kudos if it's well done - but now that the fandom has settled down, and there's a lot more out there to read, people can be more picky. So, not much in the way of comments or conversation, unless you're the sort who likes to keep a social media presence (I am not that sort ). People read smut to get off, they don't necessarily want a relationship with the writer, or them to even know who they are (if the private bookmarks and anonymous kudos on some of my works are anything to go by). I'd say, only write it if you are comfortable with it, and it's a natural part of the story. 

 

If you are writing for yourself, you can do whatever you want, and any audience response is bonus. Ultimately, any fanfic you write, is part of the general conversation in fandom. If you want to have more people with their eyes on your work, you have to go where the conversation is, the hotspots, the controversies, the things that make people angry or sad, make their hearts swell with feelings.

 

Also, keep in mind, the audience for original works and fanfiction does not always cross over. Original works demand that you do all of the world-building, character creation, and promotion, whereas in fanfiction that is already built in, people know what to expect. Again, you can tailor your work to a market, but if it's not what you want to be writing, it will show. Your love and enthusiasm is just as valuable to the work as the actual writing.

 

Write what you love. Know why you are writing it, who it is for, what you want from it. You'll be a lot happier, I think.

Thanks for bookmarking, and your kind words. Things do seem to get buried on AO3 super fast. I thought about cross posting on fanfic.net, but (and I'm a bit embarrassed to say this) I couldn't really figure out their system. You have to upload a file and then edit it into a chapter to post or something kinda weird like that? From my own lurking over there I know those folks do provide more constructive feedback. I might just have to give it another go.

 

I know posting super short little bits keeps you on top, but I like to read longer chapters myself. I also thought it would be good to push myself in terms of word count. Eh, I don't know. Maybe I'll try the short thing next time.

 

I know it's best to write for oneself rather than others. I've even offered that advice before. I just need to know if I should bother trying to write. I've gotten too much positive feedback from my family over the years. I don't trust their praise. Before I spend the next year or two or three writing a novel, I want to be sure that I'm not just deluded about my abilities.

 

Oh, and I didn't mean to pick on Feynite. I leave positive comments on Looking Glass for most updates. The E rating just doesn't really match the level of violence or sex, at least so far. I don't understand why they don't want critique. Looking Glass has thousands of readers. I'd love to get a share of that feedback, insults or praise. Its a tremendous resource that I wouldn't want to waste.

There are two buttons you need to press for that to start working, and if you're using time freeze (Home button), it sometimes completely disables it and you have to reset the settings and flycam in unfreeze mode.

 

But, on the middle tab (the visuals), there's a big green/red button saying Enable/Disable - that's the first you want on. Than each of the sub-tabs has it's settings like the blur, tonemap, fog, etc, they all have a tiny Enable tick box you need to tick in order for it to start working. The blur sometimes messes up and it's usually a quick fix with changing the far and near values with the arrow on the application (not writing the numbers).

 

Other than that, it should work.

Regarding fanfiction

I started to get reads when I hinted incoming smut, so I feel you, and I completely relate. It's really a shame some works might get overlooked due to that, but the fandom is self-indulgent and often looks for short sexual drabbles instead of full grown story with minimum or no smut in it. 

 

A lot of the really popular fics rely on advertising more than anything else - a large tumblr base seems to help a lot. I've seen completely new fics skyrocket in hits and comments only because it was either written by an established name, or the person had an enormous base of followers he/she could throw it onto.

 

So don't give up (because if you do, I will). Fandom is fickle.
