Hullo everyone, sorry to bother again... So Feynites in tumblr wrote this Young Solas/Beauty and the Beast AU fic... I ensure you that I did question my life choices.

This is adorable and lovely!  And I love Feynite's Beauty and the Beast AU fic, how she integrated the original story into the Dragon Age setting and made it her own.  :)

HI EVERYONE!

I missed you all sooo much and what has been going on in the threadverse?

I take it I'm not the one who's missing Solas without him in their life anymore ha?! I didn't romance Solas, my Inquisitor couldn't even if he wanted to, but I still love the mutual respect they had for one another. Seeing as he wasn't a character I thought I'd initially use often, he ended up being my favorite companion of DAI and in DA as a whole. I hurt a little bit when I think about what he goes through as a character and don't see him as a villain at all, I hope his redemption truly is possible.

Me too! Not the not romancing him part-- cuz I definitely did romance that fine bald elf-- but so much for his redemption!!!

Ok, so, umm, these gifs by kiwi-xeet on Tumblr are NSFW so I'm putting them behind a couple of spoiler tags.

Many pages back in this thread, we were discussing how Solas' sexy saunter may actually be accomplished by him having the female walk cycle. In these gifs, though, we can see both a female Inquisitor and Solas walking. He definitely has a different, slower, more saunter-like gait than her. I think that maybe he (and Abelas, actually) got extra special walk cycles to make us all swoon.

The world's last love song. Solas and Lavellan dancing at Halamshiral by nipuni<3 (I love her dress.)

Oooh *-*

I think I like this so much because it reminds me of Zevran in his crow outfit.

Zevran says he looks sexier as a furry.

Would dressing up as a bird still make you a furry?

Feathery?

Wow. So pretty! I've missed everyone's great fanart!

I want that dress.

Hahah! That is so not what I was expecting.

On a related note, here's a little drawing of Hierophant inspired Symbolic White Wolf Solas begging the forgiveness of all Lavellans everywhere with a shitty little pile of flowers torn from the earth.  (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Just saw this. Wow.

Some news: I must sadly announce that, after 17 years, today is my last day at BioWare. I'll miss my team, and wish everyone here the best.

I wonder what this means for new IP and I suppose that DA novel he was working on will be his last. :(

I'm confused. I have this strong feeling that I read about that (or it was mentioned in an article? an interview? some video?) some weeks back - and there it was said that Patrick Weekes will take his place as lead writer for DA. Did I dream this? Cause you all act as if this comes as a surprise. Hmmm.... :?

A couple of months back David Gaider moved on and became the new lead writer for the new IP, and left DA to Patrick Weekes. With this new announcement it is clear that he is now leaving BioWare altogether. It will be very interesting to see where he ends up!

Why would he move from DA to the new IP, only to then leave that? Hopefully he didn't have creativity issues with the team.

I think the issue is that a lot of Lavellans don't get a whole lot of development because... well, no one's really there for Lavellan. Or at least, no one's really there for someone else's Lavellan. If you take it slow and gradually develop your Lavellan, you can get readers who genuinely like her on her own and will read solely for her... but primarily people will seek out Solavellan fic for, well, Solas, and being overly focused on Lavellan, especially in the beginning, will tend to lose people.

You're probably right...
I think I got a bit disillusioned after reading all that advice on writing fanfiction. I naively believed that authors always write what they want, you know? I always thought that writing not what you want but what others want very strange. Like those AtLA fanfics that started as gen but then the author decided to include a pairing and put a freaking VOTING POLL up. I mean, don't they care at all? Idk, I get that weird satisfaction when a writer of a popular fic with some serious opinion differences in the readership just says "I love reading your opinions but I already have a vision for this story so sorry not sorry" I think those are the best stories even if I myself sometimes am forced to abandon reading them :)

I wouldn't call the tendency self-inserty, really. I've seen blatant self-inserts (in fan fiction and original works both) and they tend to be pretty... well, blatant. Most fics with Lavellan sort of out-of-focus, or off to the side, typically are less about self-insertion and more about putting the focus on Solas. And, even if a fic is about self-insertion but is sufficiently covert about it, then the simple solution would be to... not insert yourself. *Shrug* S'what I do. I mean, if that's how other readers enjoy the work, I'd just let them.Self-insertion's a really weird and uncomfortable way for me to read anything (Which is why I struggle so much getting through anything written in second-person.) but I fail to see how it's inherently bad.

The same goes for my Lavellan too, actually. I know a lot of people go with... subdued... Lavellans so that anyone can paste theirs in there, but that's never really worked for me. I (tried to) play my Lavellan as sort of surly and stoic, racist against Solas in particular in the beginning (because flatear. Worse, one who acts like he knows elven heritage better than the Dalish do), reeling from culture shock, and quiet enough to give Sten a run for his monosyllabic money. (And God, Trespasser screwed her up to Hell and back.)

But, that's not the sort of thing a lot of fanfics support, you know? Blank slate Lavellans tend to have very "normal" responses to everything, which means any situation where your character would have an abnormal response will snap them right out. Even the game itself didn't do the best job of letting me roleplay that sort of character, nevermind the fics that follow it. So, self-insertion, of me or my Lavellan, has never been something I'm really able to do. But if that's how other people enjoy the work, what's wrong with it?

I don't think it's inherently bad per se... It's more like I really didn't have any good experiences with all the self-inserts, Mary-Sues, super special snowflakes and modern girls that fell into the fandom world. I think there are far too many of them and I got fed up really quick. Or maybe it was just the hellpit of ff.net that I had to stew in while waiting for 8 months in AO3 invite queue <_<
I, personally, love non-subdued Lavellans :) One of my favourite Solavellans had super-angry Lavellan after the Dread Wolf Reveal, it was glorious
It is partly because of the fact that I can't keep in character to save my life. I really want to make an Assquisitor but don't think I could be mean to my babies :<

(And sometimes I wonder if my issue with some fanfics doesn't stem from this, because I've noticed that even the more fleshed-out Lavellans tends to be these... generic hero types, who make friends with everyone and always do the impossible with few true mistakes. Meh, maybe it's just me and my well-documented love for villains and anti-heroes, who don't seem to make for popular fanfic protagonists.)

Yay for villains and anti-heroes! I mean, my favourites are Solas, Loki, Zuko, Daco Malfoy, Pitch Black, Eridan Ampora and Stiles Stilinski
Generic hero types have become too boring for me quite some time ago :/

(also don't worry about coming off as snarky. I'm a native English speaker and I probably come off like a jerkwad all the time.)

Emoticons are my friends. They help the deadpan snarkers to be understood since the dawn of the :')

*snip*

First off hello and welcome fellow Solas obsessed one!

It isn't just you as far as the Lavellan stuff goes.  I tried to develop my Lavellan to be pretty fleshed out but I am also doing a Solas POV along with my main story.  Two guesses which one gets the most kudos.  :P  I can't blame people though.  We have all played the game and we all have our own Lavellan's.  When you are writing a fic that follows the game itself and the main character is the Lavellan it is natural that people would be more interested in Solas.  They know Lavellan's story after all.  I get that really.  Solas is... Solas.

That said the other fic I'm working doesn't have the start being the Inquisitor.  My side project fic is a modern girl in Thedas type one and she isn't the Inky but is a friend of the Inky's kind of deal.  For her I am putting a lot more character development and story development into it because there will be a lot more veering from the story line that everyone followed in game.  So I think the nature of the beast is any Lavellan's that are following the game story are going to be fairly generic and self-insert like.  Not always but often and there are plenty who prefer that and plenty who don't.  I tend to flip-flop based on my mood really.

P.S. Forgot to add I'm also a completionist.  My current Lavellan playthrough has gone on forever because I am making sure to do everything.  That said I think I won't be as obsessive with other playthroughs mainly because the golden nug is my friend.  Dunno if you've played all the way through Trespasser yet but when you get there be sure to click on that golden nug.  It will save all the collectibles and transport them into your future games.  So all those banners, beds, schematics, and so on will all be ready and waiting for future Inquisitors.

So, self-insertion, of me or my Lavellan, has never been something I'm really able to do. But if that's how other people enjoy the work, what's wrong with it?

I think self-inserts happen in some form or another in pretty much everything.  As writers we write what we know and tend to sprinkle in little bits of ourselves in what we write.  My biggest thing is most of my females are some flavor of red hair with freckles.  2 guesses what color hair I have :P.  In my defense redheads in books and movies didn't start getting popular till after Brave (loved that movie till the 100th person asked, "Hey anyone ever told you you look like that girl..." yes, yes they have.  Anyways, I digress)

I think as a writer you walk a fine line.  I usually put some facet of my personality into my characters and then branch off from there and let them grow on their own.  I've never written myself because, let's be honest, most of us are kind of boring.  We don't go on grand adventures and most of us are lucky enough to never have to face life or death situations and so on.  The trick is writing someone that a large group of readers can relate to and I've found the best way to do that is with a sprinkle of self-insert.  Hopefully then a reader will be able to find some facet of the characters personality that they see in themselves and thus relate.  When you can see a little part of yourself in a character I think you get way more invested in their story and what happens to them.  Maybe that is just me though.
