Solas' age? Don't forget to invite us when you're celebrating your 1000th birthday, then.
I'll message you guys from my head tank ![]()

I've always thought there had to be more to those things given his overall plans. I'm pretty sure they can do more than passively measure/strengthen the veil. At this point I'd say it's totally valid to fanfic additional uses/capabilities for those artifacts.
In related news Solas had a party banter the other day that made me want to smack him.
Solas: I will remember this. When it is over.
Blackwall: This? This war? The Inquisition?
Solas: The people. How you fought against the tide. It is...courageous.
I remember that banter. It was actually one of the first ones I got. Makes me wanna smack for a different reason though - when you think about it, that's a huuuuge tip-off that there's something weird going on with him. The first time I got it I even remember stopping (I think I was in the Storm Coast?) and thinking "He'll remember this? What, like he was in danger of forgetting about it before? Who just forgets about that time when they joined the second coming of the Inquisition in a war against an ancient Darkspawn abomination who's trying to destroy the world?"
I mean, makes sense now, but someone should probably remind him that mortals don't tend to casually forget about ancient horrors punching holes in reality.
I'm not sure the Veil can be brought down in patches? On one hand, Solas always says things like "the Veil is thin here" but I don't think we actually got any concrete evidence that thin=young, thick=old theory is true, did we?
I don't think it's thin = young and thick = old, as much as thick = normal and thin = some really screwed up sh!t went down in this general vicinity. It's been stated before that places where emotions run high and interesting things (Prisons, royal courts, battle fields, etc.) happen tend to have a thinner Veil, if they have a Veil at all. And places where magic is abused, particularly for demon summoning (Not so much blood magic I guess, since it apparently doesn't draw from the Fade.) can have a Veil so thin it's practically torn to shreds. Have you played the Soldier's Peak DLC for Origins? It's a primary example of what I mean - an old Warden fortress that was the site of a rebellion against the king (So, it fits the first model.) where a Warden mage was messing with magic and summoning demons (So, fits model number two as well.) While you can't take any Veil experts along with you when you go there, it becomes pretty apparent that the Veil's nearly non-existent. Freaky stuff like visions of the past and, you know, rifts to the Fade pop up all over the place.
So I'm pretty sure it's possible to take the Veil down in pieces, and really, a lot of problems with the Veil stem from the fact that it's not of consistent strength - Solas himself says that the rifts in the Veil pull in unsuspecting spirits (Think of water circling a drain.) and that the trauma of suddenly being pulled through to the other side corrupts them into demons. But, does that mean you can leave bits of the Veil up to keep something back in there? I dunno. I'm inclined to think it might, given that we didn't see any Evanuris spilling out of the Breach as soon as word got out about it. Maybe the news moves really slow in the Fade?
Yay, happy birthday also to Flemmy and DarthEmpress!

Which of the three elements, fire, ice and lightning do you guys think is the most fitting for Solas?
I always spec him into lightning because of the pride demon connection. Plus, I like using the Weakness + Shocked = Sleep combo.

If they forgot times when the sky was one giant hole (because there was no Veil), the Fade was part of the world or that dwarves have some intimate connection to Titans (or Titans whatsoever), then yes - it seems that they can easily forget ancient horrors punching a hole in the Veil, lol. Like, compared to all the other revelations, the Breach (and so do past Blights) seem almost like small potatoes now ![]()
.... Though yes, that particular banter was what tipped me off and suspected that he either has a plan to change/destroy the world or knows of it imminent destruction long before Trespasser.

Uuuuh... thing is that out of all available ability trees lightning is the least compatible with the Rift Mage (the shock from attack cancels all beneficial buffs/debbuffs). Truly, as much as I like Chain Lighthing for all my mages, for Rift Mage I only put points in those skills for some passives and Elemental Barrage.
And as for me, I tend to mix stuff up, though usually Solas ends up being a CC/support/barrier, so he mostly as rift, spirit and winter tree on his bar (+lightning staff). The other tree that works well for more DPSy build is fire - for Fire Mines (+PoTA) or spamming Immolate.

We will need to hire Dorian to send us back in time in order to go to Solas' 1000th birthday party. Solas is already well past that. ![]()
The Exalted Council takes place during 9:44 Dragon - so it's been 944 years since the new Chantry was established. In WoT Vol. 1, elves are said to have first noticed the quickening in -2850 Ancient. So, it has been at least 3794 years since Solas created the Veil.
Also in WoT Vol. 1, it's said that Arlathan was founded some 3000 years before humans appeared. Solas remembers Arlathan, but we don't really know if he was there at its beginning or not. If he was, that puts him closer to 7044 years old. And how long was he around before Arlathan was founded? Only he and his ancient elvhen and spirit buddies know.

I don't necessarily give him a lightning staff, just lightning abilities. So I can choose when I'd rather have sleep and when I want it to stay weakness. The weakness mana fountain is great, but sleep is hard CC and a fantastic combo primer. Most mage combo finishers are eldritch. Sleep + eldritch creates a nightmare combo, which is massive spirit damage + panic. And inflicting nightmares is even more Solas flavor. ![]()
I keep weakness up most of the time, but low-cooldown sleep is a good tool to have. Especially in Ferelden, where enemies are cold-resistant and shatter combos may not be available.
I couldn't remember if it was yourself or fern rain
I spy my name! I'm a September baby

For elements (going to widen the question a bit cause I love Avatar) Solas strikes me as an airbender - his hermit persona is very air nomad (not just cause he's bald, lol)- a measure of aloofness, scholarly sort, meditative, connection to spirits/spirit world, strong focus on freedom, his people are gone and ancient history (heck aang awoke to the world gone awry and him being the last),s etc. And then under that he reminds me especially of Zaheer. He has the same drive to change the world order and stuff. For fun bonus points: My solasmancing inquisitor is very much a metalbender- no wonder they clash haha
For the specifics of your question- lightning. (going by stuff associated with the elements in a personality typing way, not gameplay or anything.) in contrast cass is a fire type and Viv is an ice type (imo, tho in the avatar universe I might place them as earth/metal and fire/lightning benders respectively). Saying that to serve as some frame of reference for why I like lightning for him best.
Also I think I forgot to say thank you to ladyiolanthe, so thank you xx
He certainly is older than Flemeth, whose merging with Mythal happened much later.
Yeah, in WoT Vol. 1 it's said that Flemeth was born in 3:00 Towers, so, if that's correct, then she was only 643 years old when Solas did whatever he did to her.
I gave Solas ice, Viv got fire, and Dorian got lightning. I stopped using Vivienne pretty quickly, whilc Solas and Dorian were in my main party. With Cassandra.
Oooh! Happy birthday to Flemmy and DarthEmpress as well!

Which of the three elements, fire, ice and lightning do you guys think is the most fitting for Solas?
Spirit.
Dorian is fire, Viv is ice and my Lavellan is lightning.
I always had Dorian as lightning since his nickname is Sparkles.
I give Solas a mixture of all the elements...since he's a "God" he should know them all.
